Hi,
I like data and I like StarCraft and there is a new website called Gamoloco which allows me to gather data for StarCraft stream numbers. My data are only from January 2015 to July 2015 and the last month has wrong numbers because Twitch merger different games. All numbers are in hours watched.
I decided to pick 9 channels : BasetradeTV, Wintergaming, GSL, O'Gaming, ESL_sc2, TaKeTV, sc2proleague, sc2starleague and WCS.
Stats for 9 month for all channels.
There are three types of channel : -Channel with content content everyday like BasetradeTV, TaKe, O'Gaming, Winter. -Channel with content 2/3 times a week like GSL, SC2straleague and SC2proleague -Channel with content every month likle ESLtv_sc2 or WCS.
First one are doing fine, they don't have a big amount of average viewers, always less than 3.5k viewers but they work everyday. Second type have often 8 to 12k average viewers and they have a good production crew, they have studios, a good production crew. Last one are different, they are only doing events in venue or in studio, they have big average viewers.
January
January numbers
Really good month for BasetradeTV, they casted every WCS qualifiers and the wcs stream was not casting anything so people were watching them. O'Gaming and TakeTV are doing decent too, casting every event. GSL is doing fine, a lot of broadcasting days because of the new season, same thing for SSL. ProLeague is popular too. Winter is really popular or has bots, I don't want to enter this debate.
February
February numbers BasetradeTV views are cut by half, no famous/important qualifiers at this time, they still pull great views, 400 000 hours watched. Looks like February is a slow month for everyone, except for the official wcs channel.
March
March numbers BasetradeTV, Winter, Take, sc2proleague and sc2starleague are getting slowly higher/lower, March is not a slow month though. GSL, O'Gaming and ESL are doing great, GSL final and IEM katowice are being played in March. Furthermore, ESL Katowice numbers are really great, IEM Katowice final peaked at more than 100k viewers thanks to IEM CS:GO being late and LoL fans who wanted a final with a popular team TSM. O'Gaming is doing well, casting everyday for at least 5 hours per day and 2-4 hours of a pro player laddering.
April
April numbers
Winter views are plumeting, people are saying that he's viewbotting and it hurts his views a lot. BasetradeTV, TaKeTV, sc2proleague and sc2strealeague are still doing fine. GSL views are decreasing a bit, Code A is not hyped that much. There is no IEM event so views are ridiculous. WCS finals are being played during 3 days in France so that's the reason of whyy wcs and O'Gaming channel are doing well.
May
May numbers Winter views are still bad, he lost ~60% of his viewers, GSL is doing a decent motnh, the same as April. TaKeTV, sc2proealgue, starleague and WCS are doing good numbers, they are all increasing even though it's not by a lot. The only channel growing a lot is O'Gaming, more than 900 000 views this month and the channel is ranked 1st this month.
June
June numbers
BasetradeTV had a bad month in May but in June they are doing well, the same views as February and March. Winter views are increasing a bit, the drama seems gone. WCS views are really good because of the RO16/8/4/2 being played. O'Gaming, TakeTV, sc2starleague, sc2proleague and GOM are not doing bad but not doing very well too. They still offer quality content on a regular basis.
July
July numbers
BasetradeTV are doing well, they could not stream a lot this month because of the Blizzard submit and traveling to Germany to cast HSC. Winter views are almost back to February. sc2tarleague and sc2proleague numbers are increasing slowly buut surely. GSL numbers are still decent. WCS views are meh because it's only WCS Challenger. ESLTV_sc2 are decent, IEM Shenzhen was in a bad timzeone for the european and american viewers. O'Gaming is still growing. TaKeTV numbers are explosing because of HSC and the cast being in English.
Views since January
Views since January
StarCraft is doing well or at least tournaments are doing well. StarCraft is not a dead game and with LotV coming soon we can hope for better numbers.

Can you do a comparison of 2014 and 2013 to that of 2015?

Aren't you ashamed to steal Conti's job ?

IEM Katowice final peaked at more than 100k viewers thanks to IEM CS:GO being late and LoL fans who wanted a final with a popular team TSM.
Why speculate? Why not just be happy that a tonne of people tuned in to watch.

Dude, these stats are all fucked up with Winter included. Past stats posted on TL didn't include him and provided stats if he were to be included just in case it turned out 99% of the community was wrong and he's actually legit.
I'm not trying to hate on Winter, I'm saying the final stats aren't very reliable with such shady numbers being put in.

Oh I'm happy about it but you can't deny that the CS:GO final was late, the SC2 final was a little bit delayed and LoL viewers were waiting for the LoL final to start. There are (hilarious) threads of people on /r/leagueoflegends not knowing SC2 at all and they did not understand why a game between Trap vs Zest was not over when Trap sniped a nexus. I understand that people don't want to see Winter on these kind of reports but I was just trying to pick a streamer with a lot of viewers. He's also the only consistent streamer with more than 1k average viewer since 7 months. If you don't like Winter you should not read everything about him on this thread, I don't mind.

So we educated some new people to our game and they might watch again? You're saying that some of the viewers were worthless, when they are not.

IEM Katowice is a great tournament, a lot of hype, a big venue and amazing players. You can't deny that the LoL final was delayed because of CS:GO/SC2. I love the fact that IEM hosted other channels to the SC2 one. I''m sure with this decision some people decided to try to play and/or SC2. It's just that numbers of viewers were slighty bigger because of this decision. I'm pretty sure IEM Katowice would have had at least 70k viewers or more without it which is really great.

Basetrade and ogaming doing work, is what I got out of this. Pretty consistent numbers from them

Proleague and starleague getting lower numbers than wintersc. thats depressing

While I loath win ter, noone can deny his consistency in streaming. Viewboting or not, many kids watch because he treats it as a serious job (streams "consistently on schedule") and therefore also "occupies the place". ps: I mostly loath myself for not convincing my kid to watch something else/better.
On topic: I like numbers too <3, thank you for sharing (sc2 definetly not "ded game")! Edit: typo

countless media companies get caught fudging viewer/subscriber/reader numbers . . Twitch.tv is not doing that. They are doing something much more subtle which will never get caught. they are just turning a semi-blind eye to viewboting which creates fake viewers.
i don't trust twitch.tv's #s because they're just another media empire and its in their best interest to have #s as big as possible.
its hilarious when Winter claims he has more viewers watching him play the WoL campaign than a veteran Incontrol with a massive history in Brood War and SC2 playing the game.
twitch.tv is letting viewbotting slide because it makes their #s look bigger than they really are. any viewer #s coming out of twitch.tv can not be trusted...period..end of story.

Some important things to remember when looking at this data. I am going to talk about Korean Leagues as those are the only streams that I watch consistently.
GSL: Not really surprised that March was a big month for GSL. It was one of the most hyped Code S in a long time. The final between PartinG and Life was not only super hyped but it delivered. GSL is know between Korean Leagues to rebroadcast on a consistent basis. The day of the final, it was rebroadcasted at least 3 times that day alone. While some may argue that rebroadcasts don't pull a lot of viewers it allows fans and new fans to watch GSL on their time and not early in the morning. Sadly, rebroadcasts have been decreasing at GSL as of recently. While I love the GSL, I feel that the reduced number of rebroadcasts will put the league in obscurity for fans that left SC and new fans. Numbers will drop for GSL because reduction in rebroadcasts.
SSL and SPL: Twitch numbers aren't a real representation of both theses leagues because you can stream them on Azubu. Fans that don't want to sub for Source quality or chat on Twitch just go to Azubu to watch in source and chat for free. Also, I only remember once that SSL rebroadcasted the Season 2 finals on twitch. Other than that they only pull views on the live feed.
These numbers like many people are saying aren't a end all be all. It shows a good trend and that is what you should take away from this.
|
edit : lol reading this while you're not fully awake yet is not a good idea
|
Hey aeromi. Did you count Youtube and azubu ? Or just the english stream for Korean leagues ?
Great work.

some people don't read. this is hours watched not average or peak viewers. streamers who stream 24/7 naturally will have big numbers compared to organization streams that only go live when there's an event.
