It's entirely possible to convey everything the character has been through by looking at the current without doing flashbacks. That isn't meant to flesh out shino. It was meant to explain why her mom would go "wow wtf is happening" and why other students are like "wow, shino you murderer" flashbacks are cool though ;_;, i always love watching them

Not really, people can act in similar ways but whatever is in their back story that "explains it" you can't divine from seeing how they are now.

Then she will be relegated to supporting character again in alicization which this season will probably not cover.. I didn't paint it dark. The show is not dark at all. Sinon just has a tragic past which has never been explained in full detail in the anime so tons of anime-only watchers get confused. I had high hopes for SAO after watching the Aincrad arc but honestly, it was probably the high point of the series. I read the LNs and what's going on in the anime (GGO in particular) is just a travesty. Like, it's not even fan service, wtf.

Well you can write in such a way that you get pieces of information about that person and their character without explicitly telling you "xyz" about them. Eventually you'll be able to get a full picture of what went down with them without every having "this is their backstory" or a character that explains it all. I find writing these days tends to use side characters or flashbacks to explain plot points/backstory far too much. Once in a while they are fucking awesome. What I mean is that bad writing tends to use flashbacks a lot more than good writing. It's a way to explain plot/characters directly to the reader. Flashbacks on their own I feel aren't the greatest. Just finished reading Peter Brett who has large portions of 2 books being events in the past. There it felt more like reading 4 stories than one even though it was the same characters. The problem is flashbacks disjoint the reader by changing time constantly. Erikson I think does it well where each book is a story within the world so while the time periods change it doesn't feel like you jumping all over the place within one narrative.

The main Aincrad arc was the original story that the author written for his competition entry or something iirc, and there was a page limit of 100 or so. It was really good as it could, but could have been better with more background story and such which he added in later on in some of the extra volumes. Every thing after Aincrad arc just went downhill as if he tried too hard to milk the series and just run out of decent idea.

I do agree that lazy writers often do not try for subtlety and just have a character do X that seems out of place (or just their whole character seems off) but they don't drop in development to gradually explain it. Instead they just rely on big flashback events. I do agree there, but it is sometimes needed depending on the character or if you need/want specific context. I guess it also has to be said that a lot of readers/viewers don't pay close enough attention as well to see smaller developments into a greater characterization lol.

Also are we actually arguing whether flashbacks are a good literary device? Not like SAO guy's writing skills are good enough to make it matter anyway~

He only got it published after he won the competition with Accel world. Yup he didn't submit it. But it was still written with constraints in mind and limit to Aincrad arc mostly. It is a good arc either way, just not enough length

SAO on the other hand piss me off immensely.
