Seeing Suburu fuck up over and over is way more interesting than Slime or Overlord where the MC just wins every single time. Overlord's interesting because the protagonist is the head of an evil guild and is more or less being coerced into being increasingly evil in order to satisfy what he believes are the unrealistic expectations that are put on him. He's not OP for no reason at all, the entire story is about the nature of power and what it means to be one in power. Slime is OP for no real reason. A lot of generic isekai protags are OP for no real reason except to speed the story along and give a little wish fulfillment. Overlord is not that.

Last couple of anime seasons had a lot of good anime. Solo Leveling anime has been good, but I'm excited to get to the island arc. The webtoon was great though. This season feels a bit lacking in comparison to other seasons, but between konosuba, slime isekai, MTII, wind breaker, kaijuu, mahouka, it's not too bad. Fable is also somewhat interesting and outright silly, Salad Bowl is somewhat unique, Yozakura and that elf rom anime is good too. On May 01 2024 03:29 Slaughter wrote: Overlord is not interesting. I've been watching some Chinese anime recently and would recommend Soul Land, throne of seal and A Record of Mortal's Journey to Immortality for anyone who is interested. The 3D is also pretty decent and the stories are interesting (though they somewhat really pick up the pace for the first two). Last couple of anime seasons had a lot of good anime. Alive and kicking is an overstatement but yeah, wb BigFan.^^ Are you not watching the remake of Spice and Wolf? I'm actually surprised by how good it has been so far, even though I'm still off-put heavily by the changed character design of Holo - especially because I'm watching the dub and they got the same voice actor for Holo (amazing voice for the character) but it really doesn't fit the new design at all. As for Overlord, I found it mediocre at best. Could have been interesting but they spent way too much time on horny demons (pun intended...) instead of exploring the actual topic.

A lot of generic isekai protags are OP for no real reason except to speed the story along and give a little wish fulfillment. Overlord is not that. IMO it doesn't really matter if the protag is OP or not or how did he get there, it's what you do with it. Eminence in Shadow for example has extremely OP main but he's not really the main focus (all pun intended) and the story revolves more around the other characters which makes you invested in them. There's also this new isekai now airing (I got OP at lvl 2 or something) which has some interesting concepts. The general quality of the show isn't great but I really like the ideas. The dude is summoned from one fantasy world to the other, gets discarded as a hero prospect because of low stats (and pretty much forgotten so wasn't sent home). At lvl 2 he unlocks all the typical OPness, including the lady voice guide. What makes it different from the others is that the guy doesn't want to be used or dragged into affairs. It's really a breath of fresh air to see protag tell someone stuff like "I don't know why you're fighting so I don't want to get involved" and then just use OP powers of mass teleportation to simply move his hovel to a distant place so they don't bother him any more. This move sparks a war though between 2 factions which is an interesting lesson in not taking action without having sufficient information vs making things worse through inaction. Not the best show ever but MC actually being reasonable and some of the aforementioned interesting concepts make me want to see how it develops.

The plot twists were quite unexpected and definitely not something I could see coming from a show I thought was all about scantily clad women in mechs. In the horny mech genre I guess there's also Dai-Shogun. From the slightly less horny you might want to check out Valvrave, Darling in the Franxx, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet and one more that I forgot the name of... Kuromukuro!

Maybe a small exaggeration ![]() I thought about it, but I found the original anime ok to watch, so didn't see a reason to watch the remake. Did the original divert greatly from the source? Is the remake that much better overall? Yes, Overlord could've been better for sure.

Did the original divert greatly from the source? Is the remake that much better overall? Yes, Overlord could've been better for sure. I haven't read the source but I heard the original deviated quite a bit from the source in some instances. Like, omitting or exchanging some characters. E.g. + Show Spoiler [light spoiler] + In the first episode of the original there is a girl who "catches" the wolf and wants some affair with Kraft. In the new series, which is supposed to be more faithful, there is non of that but a guy who "catches" the wolf. I have watched the first 4 episodes by now (dub) and I'm starting to get over my bias acquired from watching the original.^^ I think the team at Passione does a surprisingly good job and I find myself enjoying the conversations very much (as I did in the original). It has been a long time since I watched it, so I take this as a great opportunity of a rewatch, that might be a little more faithful to the source. I also hope they continue with another season sometime afterwards to continue adapating the story beyond what the original did. The remake already plans for 25 episodes, which is rare these days, and should already cover everything the original had covered.

I'm not saying that every anime needs to be completely original, but this anime is an extreme example of just patchwork plagiarism that doesn't feel like a new experience at all.

The latest episode had the MC cooking and it was animated deliciously. Highly recommend it. Thanks for the recommendation. I was kinda going to skip it because the synopsis seemed like it's Mashle but with swords (and I didn't like Mashle). For me the standout/surprising stuff this season: YATAGARASU: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master - fantasy feudal Japan stuff, a lot of political intrigue and pretty well done overall. I'm a sucker for such stuff. The Ossan Newbie Adventurer, Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party, Became Invincible - I freaking love it. If you like some lighthearted fun show that takes jabs at the power fantasy genre and doesn't take itself too seriously you'll also like it. Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools - if you like romance/slice of life in a more fantasy setting and between actual adults and not teenagers it might float your boat Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything with Low-Level Spells - this is a bit of an odd one. Kinda typical isekai but the world and story are actually engaging. The terrible CG and shit animation really bring this down a lot. A wasted potential. A Salad Bowl of Eccentrics - the season for this is already over but I highly recommend it if you like a bit of absurd comedy with wonky but cool characters. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian - an OK romcom if you're into that. No Longer Allowed in Another World - poking fun at isekai again, it's actually quite funny at times and a bit more interesting than your typical power trip. The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies - this is a mix of dark magical girl and romcom. The story and characters aren't anything super unique but my god the production levels are absolutely insane for this kind of show. Some reference vids: Ossan Adventurer opening theme. Bonkers awesome. Really bold choice of music but it works. Evil Lieutenant/Magical Girl transformation sequence to illustrate the production levels.

I had a couple of anime on my radar but actually started none of them. Just watching Spice & Wolf atm. which is still enjoyable. + Show Spoiler + Although I'm a bit irritated how long Holo's insecurity phase lasts. It has been a long time since I watched the original show but I was of the impression that her insecurity and jealousy had been lifted by s2. But I also thought the current arc was in s1 so I'm probably wrong. Maybe I wasn't as annoyed by the fact that there is 0 progress over the course of 20 episodes back when I was younger or the original show handled this in a better way.
