I'm not saying that every anime needs to be completely original, but this anime is an extreme example of just patchwork plagiarism that doesn't feel like a new experience at all.
Considering Wistoria is written by the author of danmachi I wouldn't call it plagiarism. I would agree it is much weaker than Danmachi though.

I had a couple of anime on my radar but actually started none of them. Just watching Spice & Wolf atm. which is still enjoyable. + Show Spoiler +Although I'm a bit irritated how long Holo's insecurity phase lasts. It has been a long time since I watched the original show but I was of the impression that her insecurity and jealousy had been lifted by s2. But I also thought the current arc was in s1 so I'm probably wrong. Maybe I wasn't as annoyed by the fact that there is 0 progress over the course of 20 episodes back when I was younger or the original show handled this in a better way.
IKR? Imagine my surprise as I'm sitting there watching Wand and Sword and saying to myself "wait a second? Isn't this just Chivalry of a Failed Knight? He even looks like the main character of that show too." The only difference is here is that the romantic interest is locked up in the tower and he has to get to her rather than being a fan service character he meets at the start.

I've read some hot takes in my days. But this feels scorchin'.
|
Let's count em.
Magical world where magic is all that is valued and everyone ranks each other based on how powerful their magic is. Main character is a guy with no magic whatsoever who somehow is overpowered anyway and solves all of his problems with a sword instead. Oh and he wears a black and gold cloak too. - Can't imagine why I would think of Black Clover immediately.
Fancy academy setting where all of the students are competing in a ranked system and the main character is at risk of not being able to graduate if he doesn't perform well at the school's battle festival. Student is constantly picked on by teachers and other students but is somehow a magnet to the primary hottie of the story as well as other female characters. Oh and he also fights with a katana while everyone else uses ranged heavy combat. Hmm sounds almost exactly like Chivalry of a Failed Knight to me.
Setting is a town with a magic barrier and a gigantic tower in the center of it with a dungeon that the main character explores by himself. Oh wait that's Danmachi.
Can't imagine why I'd see such striking similarities.
|
1) Wisteria isn't based on how powerful your magic is, it's based on what you do with your magic. Yes, powerful magic is looked on favorably, but it's not the only thing. Character does kind of matter (hence his rival/bully being docked points/standing for picking a fight in the middle of the festival).
2)Never heard of this anime. Will isn't a magnet for the cute girls. He has one girl friend and a childhood friend he made a promise to years ago. Difference there. And I highly doubt anyone else is in love with him as much as they want to see how far he can go. Mashle would have been a better example.
3) That's as generic a reason as any and could be applied to almost any fantasy set anime. That's cheap.
Not saying there aren't anime that can't be compared to it, just saying it's better than you'r giving credit for. If you don't like it because its "derivative" cool on you. Might want to give up on anime altogether, Give others a chance to watch a few episodes.
(Not picking a fight, just stating an opinion)

The thing about Wistoria is that the presentation of the story is awful and the characters are mostly cardboard. Collette is probably the worst in that she has zero personality beyond liking Will. The only redeeming factor is the fights. + Show Spoiler [Manga stuff] +I read a bunch of it on a whim.
The first 2-3 arcs are all about mages hating Will. Lotta eye rolling from me, but sure, I'll accept it as worldbuilding. Then we get into the actual plot with a city-wide catastrophe and latent powers being unlocked and whatnot. Typical fare, but it looks cool and is enjoyable enough.
So Will saves the world and is basically a hero. And what do they follow it up with? A new arc where a mage hates Will and Will has no self esteem. Like damn, you literally just had a bunch of interesting stuff happen and you choose to go back to the old standby? Laughable.
I've enjoyed plenty of schlock, but this one was way too annoying for me to put up with.

Tolerance is definitely higher when you're young lol. I don't think I could force myself to sit through some of the shit I watched ages ago.

If it's sci-fi you're looking for, Pluto is the other big release from last year.

As Spazer said, Pluto for sci-fi is a Great choice.
Another great slice of life with a few more episodes would be laid back camp.

Losing Heroine anime is quite refreshing.
No incestrous vibes tho she's a little clingy (MCs sister is actually acting like his wingman), none of the usual cheesy tropes you see in romance anime (if there usually subverted), fun characterization (they dont feel like walking tropes), IT ISNT A HAREM and there is actual friendship (hopefully this continues), MCs isnt as bland as they normally are in this genre(not the usual where their entire personality is videogames and anime which is just insane self-insert lol), the humor is great, the side characters matter and surprisingly good animation
The growing closeness between MC and his assumed love interest actually feels natural. They have alot of little moments that dont get closed in. Alot of the scenes feel natural (reminds me of hyouka)
First time in a honestly years since I actually managed to get past episode 1 on this genre and keep going instead of being disappointed, bored or annoyed.
Pretty nice anime hopefully the formula doesnt change much.

Not really recent but if you want good sci-fi you can't really go wrong with Gundam series. The quality of this show is out of this world. You have a variety of complex characters and plot lines, lots of geopolitics and philosophy, morally grey areas (typically whichever part of the Gundam universe you start with it's really hard to tell who are the good guys and who are the bad guys). It is a bit dense in plot sometimes (to the point where if you miss one episode or skip a part of it you will have a hard time following the plot) but it's peak anime.

@Kreuger watched Horimiya season 1, i didnt remembered your note telling me to watch the prequel, it was okish imo. tried to watch the second part but i didnt feel like watching the same MC again so fast. i tried laid back camp and dropped after the 1st chapter. i will give it another shot since you gave me some gems.
@Manit0u im familiar with Gundam, i watched some of the movies that were in netflix and one series when i was a kid. i will probably give it another although the IP(?) is gigantic.
the animation and adaptation of Tower of God Season 2 is so bad i almost want them to stop

It is gigantic. If you don't care much about consuming everything there is and can't be bothered with watching very dated 80's animations (the OG Gundam is not a bad show but it can be hard to watch by today's standard because the animation style just doesn't fit the dark tone of the show) here's a list of good and more modern titles: MSG: The Origin - prequel to everything. Very well made show and it explains the root of the conflict (it's recent anime that serves as a prequel to the OG Gundam series). MSG: Unicorn MSG: Narrative MSG: Hathaway
For the alternate stories that you can watch as pretty much standalone: MSG: The 08th MS Team MSG: 00 MSG: Thunderbolt (not finished yet) MSG: Iron-blooded Orphans MSG: Witch From Mercury

Aren't most mecha animes nowadays (i.e. in the past 20 years) use cgi for their mechas, which more or less look out of place? I'm not a huge mecha fan and it has been a while since I watched them but I don't remember the animation of the original Gundam and Zeta Gundam to look bad.

Witch from Mercury looked properly animated and not CGI. I think some of the other mecha shows don't use it as much, if they do. Some studios CGI the dumbest stuff.

Mecha is 99% CGI these days because it's cheaper to make and more consistent. The uncanny valley applies less to mecha since they're supposed to look more robotic in motion anyways. Some shows are better at blending it with the hand drawn stuff, but it's still obvious if you know what to look for. The Gundam OVA/movie series are particularly good at it (when they care).

Zeta is much better looking in comparison (helps when you're not in danger of being cancelled!), but it's nothing to really write home about. It's serviceable, as you'd expect of a 50 episode tv series.

Tbf, I didn't watch the original Gundam series but the compilation movies, which I assume have higher quality than the TV show.
Regarding CGI and Mechas: Idk, I personally feel CGI feels off with mechas as well but maybe it has gotten better. Again, I'm not a huge mecha fan and I can't even remember the last one I watched off the top of my head, so I'm not up to date with the state of the art.

OG Gundams don't look terrible (they're still competently made and high quality shows for their time) but for today's standard they do look a bit goofy.
But then you have newer stuff which, to be honest, looks absolutely stunning (some of the fights in Gundam series have Demon Slayer and JJK beat IMO).

And then there's Wing which still holds up with awesome looking hand drawn designs.
Makes perfect sense why Mecha would be CGI these days it's just too damn difficult to do the kind of action in those series at the scale they want without it.
