It still amazes me that Brood War was so great despite all these completely broken concepts. Those are the units that make your units invulnerable in a small space, bring most units down to 1-3 health, and can consume friendly units to gain more energy, right? Almost. Dark Swarm didn't make units completely invulnerable, just invulnerable to ranged attacks. Imagine PDDs with infinite energy that also affects stuff like Marines and Tanks and Archons. Couldn't tank splash damage units under dark swarm or am I remembering wrong?

Yeah, Archons too. And Lurkers, which were all splash damage.

Yeah. I actually wish SC2 had been balanced for ridiculously broken stuff on all sides, like BW. It made for very exciting plays.

No one actually knowns whether BW was ever balanced or not, the game is so insanely hard that no player ever came close to playing it perfectly.
BW was kind of like dota, it's full of retardedly op shit, but everyone has it so it's ok.
