Went online just days before and there were still tickets. They cost like 17 bucks (16.82) including the online ticket charge . So I figured the place was huge. No, it was a small studio with only 50 or so seats. I broke out my Zerg TL t-shirt for the event and got plenty warm smiles, energy, and comments from everyone. Upon arrival my good friend and I were told that there was unlimited complimentary water bottles and Red Bull, as well as dinner at 6pm, which was many pizza's. I ate 2 slices, my friend who's a girl had 4. She was smarter than me... I have never had a Red Bull before but because they were free, I felt the need to try it out. You know in Family Guy when Peter first tries a Red Bull and snaps into a world filled with clouds while he sings, "And I Feel, Like I just got home and I feel." Well that did not happen, but my focus did intensify. I mean, not as much as my hand's shaking intensified, but still.
During the first match Rotterdam at one point silently started throwing his hands in the air and cheering. In my mind I thought, "One of the pros must be using his strategy he told them about, that must feel good." No, Holland had just won their soccer match. I was able to talk to him after the match while he was on a quick smoke break. He was very polite. He told me that while he gets to enjoy SC2 365 days a year, the world cup comes only every 4 years. He had watched the event since a kid, 1994 I think he said. He was just so polite to me. ( I had just left the restroom and washed my hands but they were not entirely dry when I shook his hand, and he saw me leave the restroom.) You know there's always that awkward moment of, "There's no way you peed that much on your hand, I hope that's water from washing up..." He never flinched. Props.
So for the last match, Liquid Taeja vs Pigbaby (The only player I did not know well) I assumed another 3-0. I was right but just not the way anyone thought. First game Pigbaby makes way too many obs, like 7 (not total, just at one point.) The caster's tease this and then Pigbaby wins... We, (the crowd) go wild. Why did we go so wild? Two factors. Total underdog taking first game using 7 obs combined with... limitless Red Bull. This combination followed by the underdog continuing to overuse (by the current meta) obs and beating the record streak Terran favorite. The event was so amazing. Everyone was polite and nice.
My friend Heather and I got there right as the event started so we were one of the last arrivals. (I just got off work, theme park workers always work weekends.) Clutch (the moderator) asked how we were doing and asked our names in front of the crowd. He repeated our names to everyone and told us thanks for coming to the event and did his best to make us feel welcome. Everyone and everything was just so great. I got to see the baneling plush in person... I'm sold. Best part, we're going back tomorrow! So excited for another great day. Thanks again WCS, you really made my weekend.
