I think something like the 7 Kingdoms is in debt to the Ironbank by several millions of gold. So they would be more likely to aid Stannis in defeating them. Theyre basically looking to hire mercenaries to fight the war for them now. Is there a precedence for this in medieval times? I know GRRM bases many elements of his story on actual historical events. I don't know.. the economics of this sounds very modern to me. The biggest bank in the 15th century was the Bank of the House of Medici. I believe there is some resemblance to the Iron Bank of Braavos. The Medici were the wealthiest family in Europe and also had political influence: banchi grossi (great banks): the largest financial institutions in 15th century Florence. They were the major movers and shakers in the European economy. They had vast accumulations of capital, multi-generational projects, and were a mainstay of the Florentine economy, because not only did they deal in time deposits, demand deposits, and discretionary deposits, they expended most of their efforts in funneling their capital into commerce and bills of exchange. Such bills could be a hidden and legal method to create loans bearing interest. The Medici Bank was such a bank. " However, I don't think that monarchial governments were dependent on banks so much back then. The first Central Banks were established much later in the 17th century. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_banking http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medici_Bank

He's overacting a lot, especially with his unnatural pronunciation, like he's in a Shakespearean play. I know the guy is a really good actor, and I know that the directors certainly don't tell any other actor to overact like that.. but for some reason Littlefinger sticks out with his over-the-top mysterious-guy-act. Maybe it's Littlefingers way to impress teenager Sansa? Or anyone, for that matter? I know people in real life who are "overacting" even more.

I actually think this is a real possibility, though. Varys is overacting as well, to a point, but to me, that fits his character much better than Littlefinger. Everyone knows Varys is the master of spies and knows everything, so it just fits if he's putting on an act for everyone. It's pretty much expected. Littlefinger, though, is trying to stay out of the spotlight (presumably), so it makes less sense for him to be as mysterious as possible.

LittleFinger right? was he just following orders or did he purposely build up the debt (guess this might be a book spoiler)? before Tyrion got locked up, was he still in charge of the Treasury?
