Hey TL, I’ve noticed a good amount of people here who enjoy creative writing/fiction/comics etc, and I’ve always liked TL the most out of the gaming communities I visit (even though I don’t play SC2 much anymore). So here I am, posting about my webcomic I’m starting. I’ve seen a lot of people post about their own fiction writing here, so I figure I should join in.
Note: The link starts on the latest page. Make sure to hit the FIRST button to go to the beginning.

It’s a martial arts webcomic. I’ve always been a fan of real fighting, hand-to-hand and weapons. I personally don’t like the high magic/high fantasy/superpowers/magic anime stuff that’s been very common lately. I enjoy the realistic action shows with a lot of style and more modern influences (hence why my 2 favorite pieces of fiction are Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo). So… I decided to make a comic along those lines. If you want epic grand adventure with lots of powers and save-the-world plots, then… my comic is not for you.
Now it’s pretty obvious by this post that I want to spread awareness for my comic. But this is also the first time I’m really putting myself out there, and I’m both terrified and excited. I want to make sure I do this right though, and in this digital age with a weekly webcomic, it’s never been easier for me to keep in touch with potential fans. If this thread goes anywhere, I’ll definitely make sure to stay active if anyone has questions or wants to discuss anything about it. You guys can also contact me directly via email (it’s on the website). I’ll be happy to answer any questions.
You also may notice that the art gets better over time. I think as an illustrator (or anyone who does any kind of art), one of the hardest things to do is letting go, and actually releasing your work in its state, as there is ALWAYS room to improve. I had the urge to go back and redo all my earlier pages, but I didn’t want to get caught in the “perfectionist loop” that cripples so many artists. And I wanted to also show that if you just draw a lot, you do get better with practice (what a concept!), and I want my fans (and myself) to see my skills progress as an illustrator and writer. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it.
Also, a challenge with a story-based webcomic is that the story is delivered in small bites. This is probably why most webcomics are single page strip based comics. I understand that this start and each subsequent page could be underwhelming, but that is just how it is with a story-based webcomic, no way around it really. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy it.
I’ll be posting updates on facebook and twitter (and here if enough people care about this thread).

Taking those first steps is always a terrifying moment for everyone. I did enjoy the opening scenes a lot!
I wish you good luck on your comic. Looking forward to see how this all plays out!

This is not my sorta thing or style, nevertheless i "read" it till the end. You defenetly have something to tell the world.
Tip: it doesn' t help that when i click to go our your web it start from the last shot 13. or maybe that was intentional dunno

Cool that you listed Nujabes and Nobuo as inspirations! I remember hearing the names Yoko Kanno and Yasunori Mitsuda before, but I'm not too familiar with them. I'll check them out.
Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are some of my favorite animes!

Hey guys, thank you so much for checking it out. While hits are nice, if I can make any of you guys devoted fans who go back for each page... that's what I want the most.
Coagulation, Chairman Ray, and Lunch: Thanks so much for the positive vibes. I will keep on trucking.
Pebble444: I... forgot that each page had it's own link... I am dumb lol. The main website will always go to the newest page, but I edited in the link to the first page in the post. Thanks. I respect that this is not your sort of thing, everyone's got their preferences, but if you end up liking it enough to go back, that's cool too =).
Hp.shell: =). Yoko Kanno did the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, Yasunori Mitsuda did Chrono Trigger and cross (just mentioning incase you haven't looked them up yet). So I'm sure you've heard plenty of Yoko's work =). But they are amazing. Along with Nujabes and Nobuo. My playlist when I'm working on my comic is Samurai Champloo, Cowboy bebop, ff7, 8, 9, 10, and chrono cross, so they cover all that.
And yeah, cowboy bebop and samurai champloo are just incredible to me. Anyway, hope you like the comic!

If you're telling a story you should still divide it into episodes, each of which would tell a shorter story of its own or at least tell a certain chunk of the story and hype up the next part. 1 episode/page then. This whole 1 image > click thing isn't going to work out.
learn from the best: http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detail.nhn?titleId=358422&seq=2 this has like over 100 episodes

those vertical web comics are always so good..
i agree with stratos, unless you're planning on releasing one slide of panels a time id go with splitting them into episodes (or at least making a page where you can see each episode and clicking a link takes you to the beginning of that episode i.e. the first link takes you to your first slide, the second link would take you to the 14th slide)
the actual comic looks really cool though

Stratos: Thanks for the tip/suggestion. Right now, my website isn't built to do that (though it may be fixable), but you've given me a lot to think about. I was definitely concerned about this the whole way through, about people waiting half/a whole week and seeing 1 new page and being like "that's... it?"
But I'll definitely think about this, maybe have a slower release schedule but put more pages in bulk PER release (as in, an episode). Also, I am still not that fast when it comes to drawing pages, and that is something I am working very hard on (drawing consistently better AND faster). Right now, my goal is to consistently aim for 2 pages a week, if I can get to that i'll be happy. I don't want to go put too strict of a schedule on myself right now with the holiday season coming up and lots of family obligations popping here and there, and also the fact that I'm just starting out and I have other stuff I have to learn ALONG with getting better as an illustrator. Again though, thanks for the feedback, will definitely consider it.
Targe: Definitely something I will think about. As of right now, the website is built for a per page turn. It's also convenient if I ever release a print version or something. But I do like that idea where it would take people to the beginning of the "episode" for that month or whatever.
I'm glad you like the actual comic. At this point especially (where I just launched), every genuine compliment means the world to me.
You've guys given me a lot to think about... I'll have think on this, but I got some ideas brewing.

I put 2 pages up for now, that's the first of 2 pages (page 12 and 13). I'll mostly be posting updates on facebook and twitter, so feel free to follow/like there for updates, not sure if I'm allowed to "bump" my own thread with updates.
|
www.phantomfist.com - New page up! I've decided on a Tuesday/Friday release schedule (as put in the header on the website).
In the meantime, I'm also thinking of stuff to do between page releases just to keep things going, maybe some upcoming character sketches, vlogs on what I am thinking, streaming some of my page drawings, etc. etc.
|
I'm still getting referrals from team liquid on my analytics, so I'm assuming some people still check out this thread, so I'll keep posting here for the time being =P.
www.phantomfist.com - Page 15 is up! Thanks again to everyone who checks it out, and turning off adblock helps me a lot!
In the meantime, I have some ideas brewing on stuff to do between pages... I'll post about that more later.
Also, I do most updates on https://www.facebook.com/pfcomic - whoever is reading this, if you have a FB account and want to like it, that would be cool too.

www.phantomfist.com Page 21 is up! Just got back from vacation, can't wait to get back to drawing. Can't wait to get more story out and what not =).

Still get a few referrals from TL lol, so anyway, posting here, Page 24 is up! www.phantomfist.com Thanks to everyone who still checks this thread out and reads.

www.phantomfist.com - page 25 is up! Still getting referrals from here, wooooo.
Firstly, thank you again to everyone who likes this page and reads the comic (please turn off adblock if you don't mind.)
That being said, if you know anyone who might like this comic, whether they are into martial arts, fiction, martial arts fiction, comics, ANYTHING, please, please spread the word. The success of this comic will rely heavily on getting noticed by a wider audience. Word of mouth (or word of social media) is a powerful thing. Also feel free to comment on this thread, or contact me via email if you have any comments/questions.
