Actually, 'Orb' got Orb fired, for being foolish enough to broadcast the most juvenile and offensive form of bm possible. 'Destiny' got 'Destiny fired for choosing to treat his stream like a personal soapbox and not part of his job. And 'idra' got idra fired for making a promise to his boss and sponsors and breaking that promise in a little under a week.
Stop acting like you don't rage. I've called people anti-semitic and anti-homophobic things whenever I've raged. Does that make me a bad person? No. You forget that Orb is a HUMAN BEING. Human beings often can't control anger and will say things they don't mean. Are you really punishing him for being HUMAN?
Destiny didn't get fired for that you idiot. I'm not even going to talk about why he was fired because 1) it was so stupid, it made my brain hurt 2) the fact that you're commenting on something you don't know makes barf
IdrA did break a promise but breaking that promise wasn't supposed to get him fired. He's broken that promise hundreds of times in his career. The only reason why he got punished this time was because of the severe community backlash.
Hate to burst your bubble, but I don't rage. I don't use words like Jew or faggot to insult people, either online or in real life. But their words I'm not afraid to use, because I probably haven't used them to hurt anybody since the sixth grade. My conscience is fine and clear.
Guys like Destiny, idra and orb have an actual problem. And from the sounds of things, so do you.
You get a -1 for judging people. Most of my friends are good people. Some are really smart. Some I expect to have good careers in their future. Some help in charities. All, however, have raged while playing video games. Quite literally all of them. Does raging make them bad people? Probably not. These people are normal in real life. Yet in video games they rage. Congratulations for your "clear conscience." You're one of the only people I've met that states they don't rage in video games. However, I'm a different person. I like being good at games and I hate losing, even if it is at a game that I find casual. So I rage. Does that make me a bad person?
if you get paid to represent a brand then it is your job to do so in a professional manner. if you don't do your job properly you may be fired. what part of that is difficult to understand?

pretty clearly the parts where you're forced to take responsibility for your actions and not blame them on platitudes like "being human" and "being non-PC", as well as "not gonna let the system dictate my voice, maaaaaaaaaaaaan".

I seriously do not understand how this debate is still going on. Imagine that being a professional gamer is a job, that sponsors are your boss (they pay you or your team) and that the viewers are customers (they are buying your "product"). In the real world, if customers complain to your boss that you are mistreating them and insulting them with racial slurs, guess what happens? You get warned a few times, and if you don't change, you get fired. Same thing happened in this situation.

First of all, you're the most judgmental person in this thread right now.
Second of all, how you deal with your anger on your own time is your business, and as long as you aren't hurting people no one should care.
What orb, destiny and idra did repeatedly is broadcast their rage. Not evil, but if their employers or sponsors don't like it, they have no obligation to support it.

Here's the thing that's often misunderstood about rage. People think that people who rage will often bring it in professional environments. Often that's not the case. I rage 24/7 probably worse than IdrA yet I have good grades in school, have good relationships with my teachers, have many great friends, and am generally considered a nice, rather timid person in real life. Yet I rage at video games and it is the only thing I rage at. IdrA from what I've seen is the same. He rages at video games yet becomes reserved and professional in real life. The problem with IdrA is that in his scenario, his professional environment IS video games. So to ask him to completely change his demeanor in video games that he has always had is an extremely difficult task, especially given his personality.

a difficult task perhaps, but one that was asked of him in exchange for money, i.e a job, which he did not do properly, result = fired.

I wouldn't make video games your job, because you will fail to keep your rage in check and not keep it as a job.
If you want to do something as a job, do it professional and keep rage, racism and anti semitic comments out of it. If you can't get that under control for whatever reason, you don't keep your job. This isn't rocket science, this is grown up land where people get paid for do something for a living. If you can't keep your anger out of it, you don't get to keep your job.
Honestly if you guys want to care so much about what PLAYERS SAY, that's fine with me. Just remember that these guys are ONLY here to COMPETE. They didn't enter the scene with the goal of pleasing fans or pleasing anybody. Their goals were to be the best they can be at their craft. The fact that their livelihoods and their chances of being what they want to be (competitors) is being threatened simply because people like the pay attention to what they SAY than rather how they PLAY is something I found disappointing and disgusting. This community needs to wake up. I have always loved e-sports because in the past people were not caught up in the drama. They had a few players they disliked but they kept that to themselves and just enjoyed good games. Instead, people feel the need to act like the "protectors" of e-sports by weeding out "immaturity" when they're only destroying the careers of honest folk for no reason other than their stupid, merely human mistakes. We're all humans here. People need to stop raising these players to a higher level and just enjoy the god damn game.
Well, I guess I'm another in the minority that doesn't rage at video games. There's plenty enough in life to rage about. But when it comes to video games, as you say, 'it's just a video game'. It's despairing to think that so many ragers let their own emotions be dictated by some random stranger in such a manner.

how do you not understand that in the context of the growth of the scene, the players ARE the game, because it's through the players that we, the established fans, and the hypothetical they, the potential fan interested in this "professional gaming" stuff, see the game on a level that we deem professional or worthy of exporting to the world?
nobody has "destroyed" idra's career for him, he did that himself over 2-3 years of slowly becoming irrelevant and insupportable as a professional player not only in terms of results but of personal marketing.
edit: I hate to resort to armchair psychiatry but when I keep seeing this common thread consisting of "stop pretending these players are anything other than human/on a higher level"...is the problem somehow that they are, that they're paid to play video games and you aren't? because they absolutely are on a higher level in terms of advancing how people view gaming, that in turn carries multiple expectations and responsibilities, and to continue to say they're exempt from what is basically an implied code of don't fuck over your scene/employers/supporters that every non-joke celebrity or public figure carries is...well, it's fucking stupid and you're ignoring the reality of what it actually means to support e-sports.

Hey, this could all be avoided if they just chose not to say the things that offend people. Stop White Knighting players and casters who have gotten in trouble stupid things they did and admitted that the things they did were stupid. The players are entertainers, first and foremost. That is their job and they should act like professionals while doing it. If they make honest mistakes, the community will forgive them if.

You need to wake up. No one is raising these players to a higher level. As it was pointed out, they raged in their professional environment. It would be like a cook making inappropriate remarks to their customer and then saying they shouldn't be fire because they are only there to cook.
Plenty of people had issues in their careers because of their merely human mistakes.

oh shut up. Everywhere and always there have been people who are dumb, but it's just as dumb to judge all of the community by those few.
"Few"? Those "few" DDOS streams 24/7. Those "few" got Orb fired. Those "few" got Destiny fired. Those "few" got Stephano suspended. Those "few" got IdrA fired. Those "few" are ruining careers. Those few are somehow ruining this community and ruining esports and you expect us to just ignore that?
Only the DDoS is something shitheads could do by themselves. The rest you mentioned is different. Haters can't ruin careers just by being haters.
But they did. I don't know if you were there when these incidents happened but that's what literally happened. A few haters spammed the sponsors of each player. Each player got punished. Orb and Destiny's careers were pretty much over. Stephano is still here but he hasn't been the same since it happened. IdrA's career is still up in the air.
What I meant is: if those players wouldn't have done what they did, the haters wouldn't have been able to get them fired.
They should have researched that shit beforehand. They could have declined to go to a team or take a job where they cannot let themselves go if that's terribly important to them. Or they could have taken on some position where they simply do not feel the urge to rage and piss off people because they are too content working on their daily tasks.
You think getting fired or quitting is something terrible, but it's only happening if something is off anyways. It wouldn't work out anyways, forcing shit to keep going. If you look at it like that, it's not bad at all, change is simply happening somewhat sooner.

No. You should thank them. If they pulled similar dumb shit in the past and got away scot-free, that was a problem with the past not with the present.

They're professional VIDEO GAMERS. We're playing games here. We're not running countries. We're not saving lives. We're playing GAMES.
Sorry but the moment you start accepting sponsor money you agree to certain obligations. E-sports and video-games are not disconnected from the rest of society. Some of us can sympathize with things like 'harassment in fighting-games is ok' but the rest of the world where your sponsors operate will not.
But you keep forgetting the ONLY reason why sponsors would ever consider firing or removing people from their organizations is if the public got pissed off. Sponsors wouldn't just randomly fire someone because of a questionable incident. The fact that those "few white knights" spammed their sponsors got the ball rolling. Result: People were axed.
yeah, why would sponsors have moral standards and/or do their own research into what their players have done? it's all white knighting!
this thread, man
Moral standards? You're acting like sponsors would refuse money for the sake of morals. It's all about publicity and image.
uh, plenty of sponsors refuse or don't even consider e-sports and a huge argument for their ignorance is that gaming is still perceived as a fairly immature competitive medium. the sponsors themselves don't have to be tossing and turning at night over something insensitive that a destiny or an idra might say, but the point of referring to sponsors as the turning point in e-sports arguments is that e-sports still isn't a fixed entity like other sports, and bullshit like this only makes the scene riskier to invest in because of potential pushback against a new form of entertainment that is only made riskier by influential figures repping the scene like your stereotypical young white male shut-in.
You are so right with this.
People actually believe companies will seek to sponsor a team or person in a HIGH PUBLICITY SETTING that is their face to such public setting with anything BUT THE BEST BEHAVIOR.
Why is idrA different? Because he is controversial as well as talented. He used to fulfill KPIs of a pro-gamer by at least placing in major tournaments regularly, no different than in sales in any industry; bring home the bulk of the company's bacon and you can pretty much hit on the owner's teen daughter and get away with it, hell, he would even seriously consider you for son-in-law.
But start missing those KPIs like idrA has been doing since August'12 and suddenly lampooning the office aspie stop being funny.

It would be amusing if Greg had the skills to back up his delusional assessment of himself. Alas, as it is, it's all just pathetic.
He went all Charlie Murphy on us with the delusions of grandeur

They didn't enter the scene with the goal of pleasing fans or pleasing anybody. Their goals were to be the best they can be at their craft. The fact that their livelihoods and their chances of being what they want to be (competitors) is being threatened simply because people like the pay attention to what they SAY than rather how they PLAY is something I found disappointing and disgusting. They enter to compete, but once you get paid to do so you have certian obligations & standards to live up to, some players thrive on those extra responsibilities and some dont, players are fined/removed in all sports for doing things that arent acceptable. No matter who you are, as a human being you should be held accountable.
That said, Idra will be back better than ever soon enough, whether on a new team or just solo, hell- he might even go to casting. who knows.
