Communities StarCraft II Arcade maps would like to invite you to Swarm of Hearts, a StarCraft II Arcade charity event organised by the Community.
Swarm of Hearts is a collaborative effort of four Arcade games: Aeon of Storms, Night of the Dead, Star Battle and The Star Strikers. Those games are amongst the most polished and the most popular maps in the StarCraft II Arcade.
The four Communites decided to host this event to reach their common goals which are:
- raise funds to a charity - Doctors Without Borders,
- promote the best StarCraft II Arcade has to offer,
- build better Arcade scene.
The main day of the event is April 23th 2013 (Saturday).
Thanks to our generous donors we have raised $1,535.77 / 1.195,85 € / £1,011.23 (202% of £500.00 target) for the charity!
Tournaments
Each Arcade game runs its own official open tournament in April. Tournaments are organised solely by map's Community. Tournament participants will be awarded in accordance with customs of given custom map. Be it a special model, unique in-game Swarm of Hearts achievement or elite decal. Everyone is free to enter! Register now, meet members of Arcade Community and enjoy the game!
Participation in tournaments is possible only through sign ups on official forums of given map. There is a reason for that: it will bring new players to Community hubs. Such players might stay after the event and help us build the scene even further.
Every Arcade game provides its own voice chat server (TeamSpeak, Mumble or Ventrilo).
Tournaments are played on April 13th-14th and 20th. Please check below for details.
Official live-stream
While each map might have its own streams for tournament, there will be one main stream running for a couple of hours during main day of the Event - on April 13th. Every game will be featured by appointed caster, representatives of each map and map developers. The cast will feature maps in a form a showmatch including handpicked high level players who guide newcomers (representatives of other Arcade maps) though gameplay. A Q&A session with map developers and audience will follow each showmatch.
This is perfect opportunity to get a first look at the Arcade if you are not familiar with it yet. StarCraft II features an Arcade section where skilled developers publish their own games based on StarCraft II engine. Those games might be either modification of ladder gameplay or completely new games which have nothing in common with standard StarCraft gameplay (like soccer).
Stream will start at 17:00 GMT April 13th, will last approximately two-three hours and will be recorded to watch as VoD on YouTube. Stream link is http://twitch.tv/artemissb .
Supported cause
During Swarm of Hearts StarCraft 2 Arcade charity event we raise funds for Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization working in more than 60 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. In 1999, Doctors Without Borders received the Nobel Peace Prize.
MSF's (fr. Médecins Sans Frontières, MFS) work is based on the humanitarian principles of medical ethics and impartiality. The organization is committed to bringing quality medical care to people in crisis regardless of their race, religion, or political affiliation. MSF operates independently of any political, military, or religious agendas. Ninety percent of MSF's overall funding comes from private, non-governmental sources. In 2009, MSF had 3.8 million individual donors and private funders worldwide.
In 2009, MSF medical teams carried out more than 7.5 million outpatient consultations; delivered 110,000 babies; treated 1.1 million people for malaria; treated 200,000 severely and moderately malnourished children; provided 165,000 people living with HIV/AIDS with antiretroviral therapy; vaccinated 7.9 million people against meningitis; and conducted 50,000 surgeries.
Aeon of Storms in one of the most popular maps in StarCraft II Arcade. Designed around the traditional MOBA architecture, AoS attempts to bring hero-based gameplay into the World of Starcraft, while maintaining the world-class visual presentation that Blizzard's Havok engine provides. From there, players are able to experience DotA first-hand with many popular SC2 characters like Nova, Raynor, Tosh, Tychus, Tauren Marine, Kerrigan, Queen, Zeratul, Tassadar, and much... much more!
Currently AoS has:
- 3 different set of Talents for Hero Customization. (Offense/Defense/Utility);
- 36+ playable heroes;
- Over 100 items to use;
- 200+ unique-stylish abilities.
The game has been developed for over 2 years and built a strong Community around it. It enjoys its own free VoIP server (Mumble) and official tournaments. Developers and players make extensive use of social media tools. Numerous guides and wiki articles are available for every player.

Night of the Dead is one of the most well developed and maintained custom maps in the Arcade. It is a cooperative survival game where players team up in up to 8 members parties to complete missions and stay alive. Most games last for up to 45 minutes. The game includes 3 full length storylines and a Survival Mode featuring 14 unique classes. It has a persistent rating system that saves locally, allowing players to maintain lifetime rank, karma, and rating throughout games. It has a large array of weapons, and an inventory and weight system. Users can further customize their weapons, characters, and other personal aspects.
The Community has very active forum, made exhaustive NOTD Wiki and is always eager to help newcomers. Map developers put up regular updates on social media sites.
Night of the Dead has a long history, quality content and excellent Community so is should be no surprise to see it invited to the Swarm of Hearts.

Star Battle is a team-oriented custom game variant for StarCraft II by Blizzard Entertainment. Two teams consisting of up to six people engage in intense space fleet combat, with each player using one of the nine distinct capital ships, each wielding a formidable array of abilities and weapons.
Combat consists of each of the two teams spawning at a base ship, which they must protect while attempting to destroy either the opposing team or the enemy base ship. Each ship can be upgraded at the base ship with minerals gained from killing or farming enemy 'creeps'. Upgrades such as firepower, defense, speed, and energy increase a ship's power and reflects individual playstyle. If a ship is destroyed, it does not respawn.
Twenty-one Star Battle tournaments, two league seasons and two invitational events have been successfully concluded in first two years of game's existence. The biggest tournament so far attracted over 400 players from 40 teams, establishing a new record for StarCraft II custom maps scene.
The Community makes extensive use of its VoIP server as main socialization tool.

The Star Strikers is an excellent merger of StarCraft and football. Gameplay consists of two teams of up to five players each competing against one another in order to score as many goals as possible by kicking a soccer ball into their opponent's net within the given time limit. Each player selects one unit (amidst a selection of twenty-one possible units) to control and must utilize its abilities, combining them with adequate teamwork in order to outscore their opponent. The team with the most goals when the time runs out wins.
A match consists of two periods (or "halves") set to a predetermined clock that is decided upon by the players themselves. Players then choose units before the game begins and must rush to the center of the play area in order to be the first team to obtain possession of the ball. Play continues until the ball either goes out of bounds (in which case a throw-in must be made by the opposing team) or one team successfully scores on the other team, resulting in a change of possession after the point for the goal is awarded.
The game was featured in streams of many notable StarCraft personalities, including djWheat, HuskyStarcraft, PsyStarcraft, ChanmanV, EG.Machine, Livinpink, Temp0, Axeltoss and Axslav.

The Swarm of Hearts StarCraft II Arcade charity event has concluded!
This was the biggest StarCraft II Arcade event so far, with four tournaments running simultaneously, over 400 participants combined, dozens of organizers, multiple streams including the main show with map developers directly involved and over 1.5 thousand dollars raised for charity. We have set new records and standards for the Arcade.
The event was possible to organise thanks to collaborative effort of four Arcade Communities: Aeon of Storms, Night of the Dead, Star Battle and The Star Strikers. It took several months of a voluntary non-paid work of map developers, tournament hosts, casters, graphics designers, web and VoIP servers administrators, clan and team leaders, tournament participants and other people who contributed in one way or another to make all this work.
Fundraising
During the event we were raising money for Doctors Without Borders (MSF), an international medical humanitarian organization working in more than 60 countries to assist people whose survival is threatened by violence, neglect, or catastrophe. MSF volunteers go unarmed into warzones to provide medical assistance to those in need, often risking their lives. In 2009 alone, MSF medical teams carried out more than 7.5 million outpatient consultations; delivered 110,000 babies; treated 1.1 million people for malaria and treated 200,000 malnourished children.
As of April 23th we have raised $1,525.22 ( 1.168,14 € or £1,001.54 ) which is 200% of £500.00 fundraising target. This is way above any expectations and we would like wholeheartedly to thank all donors who showed their appreciation of our efforts by donating to MSF!
Donation amounts varied from three dollars to as much as 200 dollars! 1.5 thousand dollars raised might not seem much compared to world-wide needs but investing that money in resources means as many as 500 malaria jabs for MSF. For one person, three dollars is a price of a takeaway sandwich, for another, the life-saving injection for a child.
"It is an impressive sum raised that will go really far. Long after any player here has forgotten about their donation, the good it has bought will continue in countless lives all over the world."

Members of the Star Battle community are setting up their objectives in the donation campaign right now, and they're getting creative! (link)
People really like the Guardian's ability to infest a ship:
I'll donate 25$ for each infested ship (150$ max)
Will donate 10$ for every riker infestation to the charity. [Side note: Riker allegedly will not be playing any ships which are able to be infested, since it's a long-running joke in the community and he's infest target #1]
Will donate 5$ per infested ship to the Doctors without Boarders Charity for SOH(20$ max)
Some of the objectives are meant to encourage uncommon strategies:
Will donate 1$ for every game won with no Levi's in the teams composition up to 25$
Will double his donation if a team goes to the finals without useing a Levi (50$)
And others reward the underdogs:
Under-used Compositions:$10 per win with 3 or more light ships in the composition. (light ships are: OARV). $20 per win with all light ships.
Will donate 2.5$ for any team winning after being down at least 1 ship for more then 5 minutes (this is so trades don't count). Max of 20$.
25 GBP for any Freelancer team that makes it to Day 2
I am one of the Star Battle casters, and I've offered some donation rewards:
Creative Mastermind Level: If you donate $25/£16 or more I will sketch the image of your choice (SFW) for my away screen (1/10 claimed)
10-Minutes-of-Fame Level: If you donate $50/£32 or more prior to the tournament I will display your name on my away screen as a super Swarm of Hearts sponsor and do a shout-out (I may add names during the tournament, time permitting)

Swarm of Hearts stream starts in one hour, 17:00 GMT (London time). Four game blocks will follow introduction: The Star Strikers, Star Battle, Aeon of Storms and Night of the Dead. The stream should last no longer than 3 hours (hopefully) and will be uploaded to YouTube for your convenience.
Known players and/or developers from each game will play every map and introduce it to the audience.
We will use Twitch chat and Swarm of Hearts group chat on NA Battle.net to communicate with the audience.

Maps pick was based on several factors: - quality (attention to detail) - complete and bug-free (well maintained), - functional and moderated Community forum, - high enough organisational level of the Community to host a tournament *and* delegate representatives to live stream.
I hope this answered your question. Thank you for your support. :')

Registrations for Aeon of Storms BROKENTIER NA tournament closing soon! Do not miss chance to win some cool prizes!
To help build a strong & competitive AoS community, I am here to announce that the BROKENTIER Tournament will be held on Saturday, April 20 @ 2:30PM EASTERN TIME! There are no brackets to show; every match will be randomized so you won't know which team you'll play against until the day of the event. This will be Single-Elimination, also known as Sudden Death! Yes this means if you lose one game, you are immediately eliminated from winning the championship. However, you only need to win 3 games to reach the Final, which will then become a best out of 3 matches for the next day.

it's cool np. :')
A detailed list of credits will be published when I, the host, close the event officially on this Sunday/Monday. The event staff from all four maps was about 40 people (I'd have to check). Number of participants (players) for all four tournaments passed 400 for sure. I cannot say if and what would be done in the future. Too tired to think about it!
If you feel ready you can contact ChanmanV and ask to have your map featured in Wednesday Night Sprites. This is the most organised and the only regular live show about StarCraft 2 Arcade which runs every week, AFAIK.
The last of four tournaments - Aeon of Storms BROKENTIER tournament - is due tomorrow. Good luck to all participants!
As of April 18th we have raised $1,511.50 / 1.148,19 € / £989.73 (197% of £500.00 target). This is well above any expectations! 0_o
