However there is a reason why Starcarft can have tournaments like other sports. When playing online how can you confirm who you are playing against. If its a gold league match up what proof do you have that the person you playing against is another gold person. unfortunately there is no way to know - its impossible -- so ultimately all online competitions end up been "open". if only the inhabitants of the internet world were all 100% trust worthy - which is a real shame as there is a very different feel (compared to ladder) playing in a BO3 against an opponent in a tourney situation. A lot of people don't get to experience this.

by the way the SEA community does a pretty good Bronze silver gold tourney on a regular basis and it seems to work pretty well - but obviously gold dominate but with global play maybe more people can get involved. - having said that it is still potentially opened to the same abuse and any online tourney - the details for these appear regularly here http://www.sc2sea.com/index.php -
