I'm on vacation with Heather my new wife in Puerto Rico. We're on the island of Vieques. This island has the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. There is a closed Army base with all these abandoned bunkers. We rented a 125cc scooter yesterday and zipped around all over the place. There are horses roaming around everywhere. The water is aqua blue and warm but refreshing.
Last night we went to the bioluminecent bay called masquitto bay. You can hire someone to take you out there in a bus or by boat. Heather and I decided to find it on our own and hike in to go swimming. We took the scooter most of the way in along sunset bay and had to walk in from a fork in the road. The scooter rental said "No use after dark" and "No off roading". We assumed that meant for people without their motorcycle licenses. The mud puddles were about two feet deep. After slogging down the dirt road for a bit a full sized school bus came down the road. We expected a jeep or truck or something like that... It was quite the sight to have such a huge bus on such an off road adventure. We eventually found the boat ramp where the loacals bring the other tourists to put their kayaks in. The bay looked like a bunch of dark water with some people in stand up kayaks. We slipped into our suits and walked in. The first few steps in the water breaks your brain a little. All of a sudden you see the crest of the little waves coming towards you and when you move your feet it appears as if there
is a headlight reflecting off the water. The light IS the water. Every move you make that causes bubbles lights up the water like a glowstick. I mean Seriously bright. We splashed around for about half hour before heading back to out hotel, Bananas.
We went to the fanciest place just for desert because we had a HUGE lunch. Desert and coffee was $30.00. Dinner would have been about $100.00 but from the looks of it it would have been worth it. We had a chocolate torte with pitachio creme and raspbury glaze. We also got vanillia creme brulee with mint and blueberry. The chocolate in the torte was so insane. If I were a food writer i'd say it had hints of earth with a touch of makes your eyeballs fall out.
When we returned to the room Heather checked her messages to find out one of her dear friends that recently got a job coding for Facebook died. His name is Ivan. Ivan is from a simmilar background as Heather. He was living in Indonesia for the past couple years with the love of his life. He took the job at FB about 5 months ago and they were working on getting her visa worked out. They were married about a year and a half ago. Everything was good in his life. The guy was so god damned smart. And it's all gone. He left his wife and all the people that loved him. Man... Binthi (his wife) knew he had been an addict but never expected him
to relapse.
That's the fucked up thing man... Heather's been clean for over 7 years. I'm also positive that she'll never relapse. She's got a lot of people supporting her through NA. I've met some AMAZING successful people that are Heathers sponsors or sponsees. She goes to meetings, she calls her sponsors when she's feeling crazy... life is good.
Ivan stopped going to meetings, he didn't have a sponsor. His brain said do it and he did. I'm so sad for Heathers loss and everyone that loved him. His wife Binti who loved him more than anything.
I love Heather more than anything and the thought of losing her to Heroine is crushing. To be reminded that it's possible is hard.
Ivan who I never met. I love you.
