So a little background, I suppose. I am 17 going to be 18 here within the month and I have been thinking about getting a tattoo. However this opposes a small problem considering this tattoo, will be on me forever (unless I choose to laze it off). So I have been putting a lot of thinking about what I wanted it to be. I wanted it to hold meaning, and a lot. This made me go over what I enjoy doing hobby wise... Playing SC2, WoW, skateboarding, etc, etc, but none of these things just seemed to appeal too much considering I just didn't really want a tattoo of that sort. So I took a different direction.
I began thinking about things that happened to me directly and indirectly. That may have caused a severe change in my life or something holding that significance where I can live with it being on my body..forever. I couldn't think of anything, since my life has been kinda dull so far, school work and repeat. But in this thinking, I did come across one thing, and that was my family back in Germany. I haven't seen them for almost 10 years now for many reasons. So this tattoo idea of mine finally started to grow foundation. It started to slowly mean something...
I have finally started the basis and decided what I wanted and I know I want it on my left side right along the ribs so now all I had to do was actually think of what. And then one day it hit me. When I was a much smaller child living in Germany my Oma (Grandma in German) would always make me say a prayer before I went to sleep. It went like this.
Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein Darf niemand drin wohnen als Jesus Kind allein Amen
Then followed by possibly( ~ Oma) and add in her date of birth/death whenever she passes. This loosely translates to, I am small, my heart is inside, no one is allowed inside but Jesus, Amen (very rough translation, my German isn't the greatest). However I feel this may be a childish tattoo but the more I think of it the more sure I feel that I want it. So I actually may get it because it is the one that that holds significance to me and always will due to her being my Oma.
So TL, what do you all think?|
Edit: Also if someone that is fluently German and can translate that better than I please post, Ill edit in op ^_^

Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein Darf niemand drin wohnen als Jesus Kind allein Amen
would be the correct spelling and I personally don't like it, but the tattoo should mean something to you, so asking for opinion is kind of meaningless I think.

It isn't up for us to decide for you. We all have differing opinions on tattoos.
|
I understand everyone has different opinions I just wanted to see what people thought of as a whole anyway. It may influence my choice or it just may not completely, I'm on the ropes and just seeing what people say to me helps a little on the way I lean, but it'll still be my choice in the end regardless.

do what ever means the most to you. i have 3 tattoos and only cuz they are special to me. f em if anyone thinks otherwise

Its not childish. Getting a tatto for family is an awesome idea. Go for it

Seriously tho, why do you even want a tattoo? You are 17, it's just a waste of money and you will regret it in 2 years. Laser removal is more expensive than you think. Especially something so explicitly ideological, you have no idea how much your opinions are gonna change over the next 5 years as you move out/widen your world. If you have to get something, get something that is subtle and not going to going to be influenced by changing beliefs. My brother got a little cookie monster on his leg and that's basically fine because it's funny, but anything that is an explicit message is pretty lame imo. Why would you write a quote on your body I don't even understand the appeal. There isn't going to be dramatic music and a camera zoom on your body that makes an audience think 'wow bad ass.' It is just gonna be you looking in the mirror going 'wellp, there's words on my body' and then putting on a shirt.
Of course it's your body so you can do what you want, but just giving you feedback since you wanted it

the question you should ask yourself is your history of worshipping icons. Icons can hold alot of power for people that believe in them but it's really hard to worship any one icon because it loses power the moment it stops working or fails in some way. From what you've said it seems like your only looking for a reason to get a tattoo which is really bad. You may only want it now because you haven't gotten it yet. You may be more intelligent than someone who is 30 years your senior but the reason why people bring up age is because there is a very high probability you haven't reached your peak intelligence yet so why would you do something semi-permanent when you can't possibly know if you are still happy with it 2-3 years down the line.

The reason I would be getting the tattoo is not to just have it. It is because it holds significant value to me and my memory of my Oma. She has had a big part of my life and she all of the sudden dissappeared from it because of the move from Germany to the US. This tattoo would resemble her in a different way that she will always be remembered...And I don't mind that it would not be seen by much other people beside myself because I wanted it for myself for her. It seems a bit harder to explain in text than what it seems like in my mind. o.o And I wouldn't mind it 2-5 years down the road since it is something I wish to remember, and even one day tell the prayer to my children or even grandchildren like my Oma did.
but this feedback is really helpful, making me think about everything..

One of the few good ideas for a tattoo, hobbies/tastes change but you'll always love your grandma.
|
That's a great idea. I fully support you, go and do it and you will never regret it. And I mean never.
|
Just letting you know, you don't realize how young 18 is and how much you will change over the next few years. I can't believe some of the things I thought and the ways I felt only a few years ago (and I'm just going on 23). Do yourself a favor, and wait a year before you get a tattoo. It's such a permanent thing. If you still REALLY REALLY REALLY want it after a year, go for it. Just get it somewhere that can be covered up in dress clothes.

Looks like your grandmother means a lot to you. So why not to chose the dates of her life as a tatoo?
like 12.02.1932 - 04.05.2010
the numbers will have a special message for you, and other people wont misunderstand it or think its childish stuff.
+ Show Spoiler [personal opinion incoming] +i would rip my legs off and choke myself with my thumb before i would get a jesus-tatoo

I think you have the wrong approach... First it seems like you are rushing it just to get a tattoo. I understand you found something which bares meaning to you, but let it sink in for a while. Second, you even consider removing it later as an option, why would you want to get something on your body in the first place then I ask. And for nr.3 you come and ask for advice which might or might not change your opinion. The tattoo has nothing to do with outer people and should only be significant to you or to whom the tattoo is addressed. If you are inclined to change your opinion based on strangers on a web forum, you will meet much harsher critics in real life, worth considering.
But apart from the moral aspects, I think it's a nice gesture and the right kind of tattoo to get if you absolutely want one!

Whatever is important to you and matters.
Don't bother asking other people's opinions. If you're sure enough that you want it on your body forever you shouldn't be worried about people thinking it's silly or awesome.
