To all you computer guys out there I need some help. I was trying to install Fedora Core 5 on a seperate hard drive and it screwed up. Then I had to just restart the computer as it was "installing" (doing nothing for the last 3 hours) and now I can't boot windows.
I had a glimmer of hope when windows had options saying I could boot in Safe Mode or use the "Last Known Good Configuration" but that doesn't work. It just restarts the computer and I end up here again. I was about to reinstall windows but then I realized my primary harddrive's partition still exists and is still using the same am ount of space as before.
Is that just tantalizing me or is there a chance I can somehow get windows to work without reinstalling.

well, you tried booting in safe mode and it crashed?
if you can boot up in safe mode you should disable all the stuff you dont need by running msconfig
start -> run -> msconfig then click the startup tab
uncheck any boxes u dont think u need
try booting up after
if u cant get any of this, just reinstall windows but dont format your hard drive - that way you can reclaim your files

Remove the other harddrive, and edit c:\boot.ini to reflect the following information
[boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

how do i edit c:boot.ini ?
safe mode just ends up restarting also.

oh sweet it works it owrks it works it works it works it works it works it works it works.
I dont get why windows was being stupid with the other harddrive connected. I want to format the other hard drive and try to install fedora core or a different flavor of unix still.
Edit: Windows works now except I think the USB drives are messed up. When my mouse is plugged into the USB thing it won't work.

reinstall your motherboards USB drivers =.=
if the usb port isnt on the back of the computer you may have disconnected some usb cables whilst inside the computer (easy to fix though) for the front usb or whatever.

EDIT: Ok after a short scare with the BIOS settings, I got the USB things to work again.
Now I'm trying to figure out why Windows was trying to boot from the secondary hard drive... Or at least I think its the secondary hard drive. I didn't have problems with it before the Fedora Core mess up.

Fedora core is the biggest piece of shit on earth
try SuSe linux or maybe Debian
both very good... both will teach u a lot about linux... Fedora is really just a wannabe windows... hence why so many faults... it doesn't make sense for Linux to try to be like Windows considering it's taken windows almost over 2 decades now to build up a stable YET USER FRIENDLY system....
gl hf Fedora project

I have a question about reinstalling, if I reformat I have to reconnect to the network etc, but with reinstalling I don't? I can just reinstall and hope back on BW or something?
|
it was probably trying to boot off the 2nd harddrive because you either had a bios setting indicated that was the primary harddrive to boot from, your windows boot.ini file which is really just meant to specify a dual boot setup was somehow pointing to that harddrive and no other, or the systems master boot record was overwritten with one from fedora core, meaning you did not properly begin the installation of a dual boot setup.

grats on being a retard and having no idea wtf ure talking about. whats "trying to be like windows"? GUI? thats desktop environment, not operating system you goddamn idiot. and it does make sense for linux to try to be like windows in order to get more exposure and popularity. just because fedora integrates the most common applications and easy to use desktop env doesnt mean its core is any different from other linux distros
