By ignoring ads there is no "potential" sale.
The ad system works by counting the number of views each add gets, this is often done by counting the number of time a page is loaded and an ad on that page is loaded. TL uses Google Ad sense i believe but someone correct me if i am wrong i only make the assumption because they are the largest ad provider on the internet.Companies go to google and pay a set amount of money to google to have there ad run for however long, these ads can be run on there search or any of the websites that host google provided ads. Google then looks at the number of views and google pays each website monthly for the number of ad views and clicks. Google Ad sense pays out one of two ways the first is the number of views an ad gets, this is often a set amount based on 1,000 views. The second is a set amount based on each click an ad gets. The number of views per ad is a much more common method because people don't often click on ads but that is also why its by 1,000 views and not be view. So simply by having ad block off each page loaded with an add counts towards a view and every 1,000 gains TL a set amount of money. All in all if you like this site and enjoy what TL provides just set your ad block to allow ads on TL and help them pay for somthing you use on a daily basis. Teamliquid.net uses Google Analytics, Google AdSense and Quantcast. Source: Ghostery addon for Firefox.

I don't think it is so much that people who view ads see themselves as above those who don't. I feel like this is a legitimate point. You can argue that TL gets money from me looking at ads and I like TL, but I KNOW 100% that none of these ads are going to interest me at all and I will never click any of them, etc etc.... So who would I really be ripping off, TL for browsing it without looking at ads, or the ad companies for purposely looking/clicking them to give TL free money when I have no intention of actually buying those products? So basically I'm being called selfish because I don't want companies to give TL free money, I don't understand where you guys are coming from.
Ads aren't just a product on their own, their point is to have people buy stuff eventually. If I know for sure I will never buy any of the products the ads advertise, then me removing adblock is basically a gateway for ripping off these ad companies. I don't remove it because I just have it on for every website, I'm never going to click an online ad so why bother browsing with them on?
EDIT: This isn't a hit on TL, this is the same for every website I browse

Yes.
Adblock > Youtube Adblock > Streams
I just hate ads, nothing against teamliquid or youtube or anything, but if I can't watch what I wanna watch without being interrupted by obnoxious ads, then damn, that would suck. ):
Just personal preference, I don't hate esports!

I agree. I don't see any reason to be negative towards TL, the site acts as an excellent hub for (mostly)SC/SC2 and the organization here is top notch. Events schedules, live streams, very active forums... all very good.

And what about the vibe that all adblockers are huge piece of shit in this thread?

The OP is being hypocritical. Teamliquid staff can enforce any rule they want because it's their site, and somehow, I'm expected to not do the same to them on my PC. The shortest way I can put it is - my computer, my rules. Rule #1: No ads. Sorry. And besides, I've seen enough threads on ad-blocking and eventually each and every one of them gets to the conclusion that "ad-blocking = stealing".
Edit reason: typo, formatting.

Most ads that are played on streams such as the cigarette adds try to make you look at disgusting stuff when your trying to enjoy some starcraft. Watching adds is not the only way to support e-sports so its " Optional". Plus most pro players that many people do view are sponsored by many different companies and the team they play for. So not watching a few streams that might or might not have adds is irrelevant to the growth of E-Sports because it is not dependent on mass marketing via adds. Just my 2cents Personally if I for whatever reason cant wait for the stream to start/dont feel like watching ads i just click on "watch on twitch.tv". But TL itself is a site with so many voluntary workers, theres so much effort put into it for very little monetary gain, and personally I dont even notice the ads, theres no "disgusting" stuff I ever see on here. Well here in the states they do cigarette adds where they show a guy with plastic gloves on squeezing out all this puss looking stuff from what looks to be an artery onto a napkin. The second looks like they just took a sponge and filled it with sludge and they squeeze it into a measuring cup. Those are the two recent ones that really have me refraining from watching streams sometimes. Yes TL.net is kept up with a lot of voluntary workers which is respectable. The catch is that most streams are done by the "players" not the actual TL.net staff. I could agree if say Chill had a stream that he did whatever on but that is not the case. E-sports encompasses not only TL.net but the entirety of making online gaming bigger and better. So reserving the right to watch or not to watch adds is fine. If you want to support your favorite players then watch the adds if not its your choice to do so!
Why are you only focused on streams, my point is that its your choice to support the players or not, but I think everyone should not block TL.net the forum, every single page that isnt just for streams. If you dont wanna support the player, just click on the external link to twitch.tv or whatever.

The whole " doing this is hurting e-sports " is getting annoying to be fair. I adblock streams but i don't for the TL banner. I

We think they are because they, because they are denying money to a fantastic organisation because they don't want a tiny banner here or there? or cant watch 5 seconds of adverts every now and then in exchange for otherwise COMPLETELY FREE CONTENT.
Its not elitism, we're not bigging ourselves up, we're calling you out for what you are.

i don't adblock on TL anywhere. Although the new ads are definitely more noticeably annoying.

So you would make the same argument to someone who owns a DVR?
What about someone who drives down the road but tries to not look at billboards?

Don't ask me. Call them out on it.

Well for those complaining about TL not being E-Sports they changed the banner to say "Don't hurt this Elephant" instead.
