After much procrastination I'm putting to words the details of our trip to IPL3. It was our first live SC event and I can't think of much that could have improved the trip. We rolled in on Thursday morning with approximately 10 minutes to find the sign ups for the open bracket, as I was entering as a competitor. We entered Ceaser's through a street level enterance and were completely lost until I spotted the entire EG crew and followed them into Circus Maximus. After a redirection from the uber-awesome IPL staff I got signed up and found my way to the open play area for some practice. Then Blizzard blacklisted everyone. =D
Proof that I'm not using a royal we. This is Charisa and I. Photo courtesy of Jason, who is a boss.
Since I'm sure everyone's heard about the event a billion times so far I don't think I need to go through a play-by-play, instead I'm going to cover all the extra stuff that made this event something unique. It started on day 1 with the blacklisting, when we suddenly had time to kill. The swag bags came with 30 card MTG decks and the girlfriend and I decided to play out a few games. I snagged the blue deck and definitely felt like it was stronger than her green.
Soon after I was called up to play NrGMonk for my round 1 match, he proceeded to knock me down to losers in a 2-1 series. About here is where Charisa was finding herself with some downtime. Not being as huge of a sc fan as I, she set up a game of Dominion that began the big adventure of the weekend.
Dominion, a game of deck building, province buying, and heavy drinking
Our table began to draw attention in the open bracket room and pretty soon Charisa found herself teaching Dominion, with the aid of our good friend booze, to just about every passerby she could get into a seat. At one point I think people thought she was with the company that made it and was demoing the game.

The day proceeded as normal from there, I worked my way up to round 5 of the loser's bracket, which felt good after my round 1 loss. After my matches were done for the day we wandered around and I have to say the venue was a blast. The IPL crew kept things moving between games. That night I caught the Live On Three podcast which sadly involved very little hair trimming, but oh well.
Our other big hit was pandemic, a co-op save the world from disease game
Day 2 Proceeded much the same as day 1, though with the hours of down time our table had a good group around it getting games in and generally having a good time despite the technical difficulties. With a break to watch HuK vs. Boxer BW style. When internet came back I got knocked out of the loser's bracket in Round 5 by RGNSpades, which gave me the opportunity to rush over and see White-Ra vs. Idra at the main stage in CMax. We watched all of white-ra's games that night, and after his last game were on our way back to the room to play a couple more games and pass out.
That would have been the end of the day if not for a fateful text from d3 that led us into the epic games of mafia that have been popping up in other TL members' blogs. All I can really say about them is that they were awesome games with awesome people. Charisa met Sheth on night 2 and they teamed up during one of the smaller games. Later, not knowing much about him from an esports perspective she comes up to me and says, "He's a super nice guy," which cemented in my mind how true it is.
Meet FChill. I'm pretty sure he had the best survival rate of any of us.
The final game of the weekend ended in an epic Hot_Bid troll, a game of Mafia with no mafia members. It came down to a choice between Charisa and someone I met the night before, and me having to choose who to lynch. I chose to lynch my girlfriend cause I'm an idiot, Damn you Hot_Bid!
We spent our final day watching the championships and cheering our asses off for Stephano. We went out for a final dinner with the mafia crew and I gotta say you guys were great, and you helped make the weekend for Charisa and I. To anyone who has a chance, I implore you to go to the next event that comes near you. The community was super-friendly to us, even Charisa who's a bit of a newbie. =)
Overall I couldn't have been happier with the event. The SC, meeting the TL crew, talking and getting signatures from the pros, it all made for one of the best weekends we've had. Charisa's slowly turning into a legitimate SC fan and this event is a big part of that I think. Hopefully I can catch everyone we met in Providence, and if anyone who reads this sees us at a table playing board games come on up and have a game and a beer with us!
Hot_Bid modding a game
Bullshit! That sounds like Mafia talk to me!
Me playing NrGMonk
If this is a cup... I'm not mafia
Poor Sheth just couldn't convince him, even though he was obviously not Mafia the whole game.
Hot_Bid giving Sheth a consolation hug
Me being all sexy
I got to sit next to Sheth. Squee!

awsome stuff... i don't get the whole I killed ur girlfriend thing...

Wow, I'm so jealous. I'd love to go to an event but there are no big ones in the UK (or near), I think the nearest proper event would be Dreamhack but that's pretty hard to get to. I'm green in envy of you ;D

Great blog! except for the part where you lied about killing your girlfriend.
|
He "killed off" his girlfriend during the game of Mafia. Pretty much all the other IPL blogs (that mentioned the Mafia games) mentioned this.
Great blog! 5/5. So, uh, why... did you choose your gf over a stranger?
(I played Mafia with my wife before in a big group and I was Mafia and had to convince others she was Mafia to protect Cosa Nostra... So I guess I could understand.)

I hope I didn't do any lasting damage to your relationship.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger right!?!?

What if it's debilitating poison that leaves you permanently crippled though?

Man I thought that you actually killed your GF physically.

Maybe she felt that way after the betrayal. :-)

In an earlier game I convinced everyone that he was mafia (when it was really me ^_^) and actually made it to the last 3 players. If only Krukar decided to side with the girl instead of the token black dude mafia would have won. :[

How could anybody possibly think Sheth is mafia?

haha, of course not. She's just going to use it to get me to buy her stuff. Clever girl...

I don't remember the details of the logic since it was 7AM at that point, but he had an argument that made sense, and when she tried to argue her side she messed up somewhere and it was all I had to go on. Of course neither of them being Mafia makes that pretty rough. =/
EDIT: I remembered my other reason. Right before Sheth went out he mentioned trusting the other guy, and in earlier rounds I'd noticed Sheth had a weirdly good intuition about who was mafia and who wasn't. Not Mango level (holy shit), but still pretty good. It wasn't the deciding factor, but it definitely made me trust DrCoffeeBean less. =D

So only Hot_Bid (and the other game mods) knew no one was Mafia? So the guy you sided with was probably actually convinced your gf was Mafia... Dang Hot_Bid!
|
In that final round of only 3 people the other guy was really vocal and accusatory about her, talking about how he had figured it out from previous rounds and she being new seemed to really not know how to respond, not really saying much. Also this other guy had in a couple of previous rounds said stuff like "i really don't want to be in the last round because it's too much pressure, either lynch me or mafia kill me plz so i can just watch the game", which I grant is a rather suspicious thing to say but at least in my estimation it seemed sincere as just a suicidal townie. So that might have "cleared" him, and left the quiet gf as the more probable mafia.
I had been killed off that night, and I have to say it was an intense moment. As we died off one by one Hot_Bid would come over with a completely straight face to tell us there was no mafia and it was hard to contain our shit-eating grins.

Yeeeaaah and I didn't have much of an argument since I couldn't tell if the mafia member was my boyfriend or the other guy. (>_<)

(>_<) It was more obviously not your bf because he was the one having a hard time deciding between you two, if he was mafia he'd just go with someone quicker, not agonize over it.

DEADZ!!! awesome blog man, You really got to be careful when you kill your girlfriend vengeful spirits and all...

I love Mafia. In one game I played last year there were several couples playing, and one couple were two lawyers, and the wife was mafia and she thoroughly convinced her husband she was not, and when he was killed off and saw that she was mafia, he had to leave the room... :-)
