Did you know if you sped less you would use up less gas? Depends on the speed limit, the car, and the roads, actually. Certain speeds are incredibly inefficient for certain cars in certain gears. Automatics especially can have trouble, in particular if they have overdrive and you live in a hilly region. Also, acceleration (especially hard acceleration) is where the gas loss really comes from. You can speed a bit over on the highway and get essentially the same mileage. It's just the aggressive driving pattern usually associated with speeding involves hard acceleration, losing the gas. Mind you, tickets still cost more than the extra gas from slight inefficiency at a certain speed.

I meant it assuming he probably floors it from a stop considering it sounds like he drives like an asshole, not going 5 miles over will kill gas mileage, guess I worded it wrong

And the driving pattern is much more concerning than the particular speeds. Telling him not to drive like a moron and he'll save gas and possibly lives, and definitely cash makes more sense in my book. I know plenty of people who don't really speed but still drive like complete ignorant assholes. I've nearly been run off the road by people like that more times than I can count. That's the main reason I corrected it. The speeding is a symptom, the problem is driving like an ass.

On a side note, I don't know exactly how far you must drive to go to work but you might want to consider public transpo. :D Read the op again. Everyone makes mistakes but in this case what he said was actually warranted to op.

You speak about the problem as if it is only financial, but the fact is that you are a dangerous driver and should also worry about your safety.

Maybe I am indeed a very very conservative driver. And don't drink. But for the love of god, don't underage drink and drive. Also, you might want to get a really cheap used compact car. Because if you are spending that much on gas in that distance you're probably driving an Abrams tank.

Also remember driving is a privilege, not a right. I love driving, but you won't appreciate what you have until you lose it. Be smart, drive safe.
