I got a job, beginning of this year. Yay me! Except, I had to drive to it. Which, was fine, I got lame but tolerable hours with decent pay (5 hours a day, 11 dollars an hour). So, I got my license, and have been using my parents' car. Between gas and insurance, most of my income went to that (140 a month for insurance, 10-20 dollars a day for gas depending on where I was working). Fortunately, I still made a couple hundred a month in the end, that was suppose to be going to my own car but ended up going to booze, pet care, and junk. Then, the first ticket came a couple months later. Shit, I thought. 100 dollars later, ticket was taken care of, and I hoped that would be the end of it.
Nope. A month after court, I get pulled over and slapped with a dwi because I'm under 21 and had a reading of .077 (.08 is legal limit in this state). That was three days ago. Just to get the car back from the tow company was 160 dollars, plus whatever legal fees are involved in the state pressing charges and a lawyer. Today, I got yet another ticket, for 200 dollars.
Every time I've been pulled over, its for speeding. The first ticket, going 70 in a 60 zone in the fast lane, and getting caught in a speed trap. DWI, 45 in a 35 at midnight, and using that as a reason to test me for inebriation. Today, going down a hill I hit 47 in a 30 with nobody around except the cop waiting in the backside driveway at Lowels.
Between my insurance skyrocketing, ticket costs, paying 4 dollars a gallon and spending 10-20 dollars a day just to go to work (where I come home with 50), I'm just as broke as I was before I had the job.

maybe you shouldn't drink and drive?

Does driving suck, or do you need to not suck at driving? I kind of got forced to start doing better, between a few grand in tickets and being one violation away from a suspended license for about 2 years straight.

The best thing to help with that lead foot, at least for me, was to do some math, and figure out how much time you actually save in some of your common drives by going speeds you have a chance of not getting stopped for.

When you realize how far you have to drive for 5 over to matter, and you realize you don't want another ticket for more than that, it makes it easier to be patient on the road.

But yes, driving is expensive as all hell. As is being an adult in general.

I won't go all hypocritical and tell you not to drink and drive, but I will suggest not getting caught.

I think you're missing a word in your title. Right at the beginning, you forgot to add "My".

Driving does suck though. Years of driving 24+ hours to/from school twice a year and then monthly driving 11 hours (one-way) to visit my long-distance gf for 2 years is enough penance. I barely flinch on long drives anymore, but that doesn't make them suck any less.

I can't believe you've gotten stopped so many times =P. I never drink and drive but I tend to go a little over the speed limit once in a while but I never run into any trouble. If I know the area and know the spots where cops like the hide out then I just be extra cautious about my speed and let loose areas where I know there is a 1/ 1,000,000,000 chance of a cop being there without me noticing. Then of course in areas I'm not to familiar with at all then more caution and obey the limit to maybe at least 5 over.

If the cops in your area pull you over for just going 5 or 10 over then there's just not much you can do about it but to completely obey the speed limit.

I'm sure you are mister perfect. On a side note, I don't know exactly how far you must drive to go to work but you might want to consider public transpo. :D

here's an idea, stop speeding...I've driven for almost 3 years now and I have only gotten 1 ticket and that's because the person I had to follow (my own mom) was speeding and I had to keep up seeing as I was unfamiliar with the area I was in and she had the only navigation system

Please stop driving. Especially if you're doing it drunk.

Exactly. Once I did the math it was obvious it's not worth speeding. Not only do you save almost no time from speeding in the first place even in ideal conditions (no traffic lights, no construction, etc), but you also have a much higher likelihood of losing more time (and money) by being pulled over or getting into an accident.

Say you're going 10 miles an hour faster than traffic flow:

(Speed limit: 55)
Traffic flow speed: 60mph
Your speed: 70mph

To illustrate...
Going those speeds over the course of 20 miles the amount of time it takes:

@ 60mph: you are going 1 mile per minute. So roughly 20 minutes.
@ 70mph: you are going 1.16 miles per minute. So roughly 23 minutes.

Over the course of 20 miles in this case, you only save 3 minutes. When you take into consideration the possibility for slowdowns like traffic congestion, construction, and add to it the higher likelihood of being pulled over or involved in an accident, those 3 minutes really are not worth it. Considering most drives are less than 20 miles, you already aren't saving much time even in ideal conditions.

Also, if you speed during street driving, you will always lose time running into traffic lights. You pretty much never arrive faster speeding that way.

Holy shit, do you work at some place which is 30 miles away from where you live? ROFL. There is no chance that you spend 10-20$ daily on fuel with 4$ a gallon.

You really need to smarten up. Why are you speeding while drunk? That is a big no no. When intoxicated you need to follow all the traffic laws. Also, how you get caught for so many speeding tickets? You just need to smarten up and pay more attention and look out for cops. No need to get caught so many times.

Getting pulled over for 10 over is kind of silly... Around here anyway, going 70 in a 60 will have you getting passed by most people. But the underage drinking and driving is damn stupid. At least have some common sense to not speed if you are are an underage new driver. I honestly don't know how much you have to drink to get .077. I have driven after one or two (but usually waiting for a while for it to wear off enough), and I don't really know what level that puts me at.

well, and it didn't occur to you that sticking to the rules might prevent this? But it must be the cops and the driving that are the problem which forces you to go faster than allowed.
I think it's good that you get pulled over so often for this, maybe one day it will teach you, repetive exercise remains in your brain.
