I got a job, beginning of this year. Yay me! Except, I had to drive to it. Which, was fine, I got lame but tolerable hours with decent pay (5 hours a day, 11 dollars an hour). So, I got my license, and have been using my parents' car. Between gas and insurance, most of my income went to that (140 a month for insurance, 10-20 dollars a day for gas depending on where I was working). Fortunately, I still made a couple hundred a month in the end, that was suppose to be going to my own car but ended up going to booze, pet care, and junk. Then, the first ticket came a couple months later. Shit, I thought. 100 dollars later, ticket was taken care of, and I hoped that would be the end of it. Nope. A month after court, I get pulled over and slapped with a dwi because I'm under 21 and had a reading of .077 (.08 is legal limit in this state). That was three days ago. Just to get the car back from the tow company was 160 dollars, plus whatever legal fees are involved in the state pressing charges and a lawyer. Today, I got yet another ticket, for 200 dollars. Every time I've been pulled over, its for speeding. The first ticket, going 70 in a 60 zone in the fast lane, and getting caught in a speed trap. DWI, 45 in a 35 at midnight, and using that as a reason to test me for inebriation. Today, going down a hill I hit 47 in a 30 with nobody around except the cop waiting in the backside driveway at Lowels. Between my insurance skyrocketing, ticket costs, paying 4 dollars a gallon and spending 10-20 dollars a day just to go to work (where I come home with 50), I'm just as broke as I was before I had the job. /bitching blog post

maybe you shouldn't drink and drive?
|
Does driving suck, or do you need to not suck at driving? I kind of got forced to start doing better, between a few grand in tickets and being one violation away from a suspended license for about 2 years straight.
The best thing to help with that lead foot, at least for me, was to do some math, and figure out how much time you actually save in some of your common drives by going speeds you have a chance of not getting stopped for.
When you realize how far you have to drive for 5 over to matter, and you realize you don't want another ticket for more than that, it makes it easier to be patient on the road.
But yes, driving is expensive as all hell. As is being an adult in general.
I won't go all hypocritical and tell you not to drink and drive, but I will suggest not getting caught.
|
I think you're missing a word in your title. Right at the beginning, you forgot to add "My".
Driving does suck though. Years of driving 24+ hours to/from school twice a year and then monthly driving 11 hours (one-way) to visit my long-distance gf for 2 years is enough penance. I barely flinch on long drives anymore, but that doesn't make them suck any less.

I can't believe you've gotten stopped so many times =P. I never drink and drive but I tend to go a little over the speed limit once in a while but I never run into any trouble. If I know the area and know the spots where cops like the hide out then I just be extra cautious about my speed and let loose areas where I know there is a 1/ 1,000,000,000 chance of a cop being there without me noticing. Then of course in areas I'm not to familiar with at all then more caution and obey the limit to maybe at least 5 over.
If the cops in your area pull you over for just going 5 or 10 over then there's just not much you can do about it but to completely obey the speed limit.

I'm sure you are mister perfect. On a side note, I don't know exactly how far you must drive to go to work but you might want to consider public transpo. :D
|
if this isn't a troll, i hope they take your license away and you never drive a car ever again. same goes to everyone who drink and drive
|
here's an idea, stop speeding...I've driven for almost 3 years now and I have only gotten 1 ticket and that's because the person I had to follow (my own mom) was speeding and I had to keep up seeing as I was unfamiliar with the area I was in and she had the only navigation system
|
Please stop driving. Especially if you're doing it drunk.
|
I think you need to rethink this whole driving thing.

Do you live in upstate NY by any chance? Cops are everywhere up there.

Exactly. Once I did the math it was obvious it's not worth speeding. Not only do you save almost no time from speeding in the first place even in ideal conditions (no traffic lights, no construction, etc), but you also have a much higher likelihood of losing more time (and money) by being pulled over or getting into an accident.
Say you're going 10 miles an hour faster than traffic flow:
(Speed limit: 55) Traffic flow speed: 60mph Your speed: 70mph
To illustrate... Going those speeds over the course of 20 miles the amount of time it takes:
@ 60mph: you are going 1 mile per minute. So roughly 20 minutes. @ 70mph: you are going 1.16 miles per minute. So roughly 23 minutes.
Over the course of 20 miles in this case, you only save 3 minutes. When you take into consideration the possibility for slowdowns like traffic congestion, construction, and add to it the higher likelihood of being pulled over or involved in an accident, those 3 minutes really are not worth it. Considering most drives are less than 20 miles, you already aren't saving much time even in ideal conditions.
Also, if you speed during street driving, you will always lose time running into traffic lights. You pretty much never arrive faster speeding that way.
|
Holy shit, do you work at some place which is 30 miles away from where you live? ROFL. There is no chance that you spend 10-20$ daily on fuel with 4$ a gallon.
|
You really need to smarten up. Why are you speeding while drunk? That is a big no no. When intoxicated you need to follow all the traffic laws. Also, how you get caught for so many speeding tickets? You just need to smarten up and pay more attention and look out for cops. No need to get caught so many times.
|
Getting pulled over for 10 over is kind of silly... Around here anyway, going 70 in a 60 will have you getting passed by most people. But the underage drinking and driving is damn stupid. At least have some common sense to not speed if you are are an underage new driver. I honestly don't know how much you have to drink to get .077. I have driven after one or two (but usually waiting for a while for it to wear off enough), and I don't really know what level that puts me at.
|
well, and it didn't occur to you that sticking to the rules might prevent this? But it must be the cops and the driving that are the problem which forces you to go faster than allowed. I think it's good that you get pulled over so often for this, maybe one day it will teach you, repetive exercise remains in your brain.
|
lol u got stopped that many times? there is also no way u can spend 10-20$ daily on fuel w/ $4 a gallon LOL
|
I had a similar experience with my van and parking, registration, and street sweeping tickets (among insurance, gas, and car maintenance) It was so expensive that I ended up losing everything and I still owe money on the expired registration ticket that went to collections 1250$. And I since I lost my job and cant drive i am far worse off than before i had the car and job to begin with.
|
I would hate driving also if I caused myself so much needless grief. Slow the fuck down, stop drinking and driving, and think.
|
Correction to your title:
driving sucks when you break the law.
|
Well i am sure you learned your lesson now , drive under the speed limit from now on, Money doesnt grow on trees and spending 1 more minute of driving wont kill you you know , might actually save your life.
|
Wow, I learned after 1 ticket to stop speeding. Sounds like you just don't learn from mistakes too easily. Did you know if you sped less you would use up less gas?

Depends on the speed limit, the car, and the roads, actually. Certain speeds are incredibly inefficient for certain cars in certain gears. Automatics especially can have trouble, in particular if they have overdrive and you live in a hilly region.
Also, acceleration (especially hard acceleration) is where the gas loss really comes from. You can speed a bit over on the highway and get essentially the same mileage. It's just the aggressive driving pattern usually associated with speeding involves hard acceleration, losing the gas.
Mind you, tickets still cost more than the extra gas from slight inefficiency at a certain speed.

I was waiting for someone to come and get Bill Nye all over my last sentence. I meant it assuming he probably floors it from a stop considering it sounds like he drives like an asshole, not going 5 miles over will kill gas mileage, guess I worded it wrong

Yeah, it's much more aggressive driving that kills mileage than any particular speed. And the driving pattern is much more concerning than the particular speeds.
Telling him not to drive like a moron and he'll save gas and possibly lives, and definitely cash makes more sense in my book. I know plenty of people who don't really speed but still drive like complete ignorant assholes. I've nearly been run off the road by people like that more times than I can count.
That's the main reason I corrected it. The speeding is a symptom, the problem is driving like an ass.

I'm a shitty driver cause the only thing I look for when I'm doing 70 in a 55 zone or 50 in a 35 zone are the cops..

In those 35 zones you should consider watching out for people's kids instead of cops. They have low speed limits for a reason.

Why else did I call myself a shitty driver lol

Driving doesn't sucks in my book. Been doing it for 13 years now (started 18 when it's legal in here to drive a car and never stopped) and I've only "earned" myself 2 tickets thru out all these years ... Parking tickets that is. And it's not like I've been driving some old beat up car that can't go over the speed limit. I had, for 12 months, a Nissan 300ZX bi-turbo :D Had to part with it coz I couldn't keep up with its gas bills. Real shame, but that's reality here.

you're also Blind!

To put it into perspective, going 47 mph in a 30 zone would lose you your licence in Norway and you wouldn't be able to get it back for at least 3 months. A blood alcohol level of 0.077 would also cause you to lose your licence without being able to get it back for over a year.
You speak about the problem as if it is only financial, but the fact is that you are a dangerous driver and should also worry about your safety.
|
Your cost to society when you do these behaviors is way higher than the fines would portray.
Maybe I am indeed a very very conservative driver. And don't drink. But for the love of god, don't underage drink and drive.
Also, you might want to get a really cheap used compact car. Because if you are spending that much on gas in that distance you're probably driving an Abrams tank.

I've been a driver for 10 years now. Had to junk my last car in April. I couldn't afford to keep it on the road. Finishing college and working only part time, it was too expensive to maintain. Been taking the bus/bike ever since.
Also remember driving is a privilege, not a right. I love driving, but you won't appreciate what you have until you lose it. Be smart, drive safe.
|
STOP BREAKING THE LAW ASSHOLE!!
Seriously though, just go the speed limit and you will rarely get pulled over. I used to speed as well, until I realized that getting to my destination 1-5 minutes quicker just isn't worth it. Since I stopped speeding, I almost never get pulled over(and when I do, I somehow get let go).

I agree very much so with the bold part. I feel no sympathy for you as my life would be a lot easier if there weren't so many reckless drivers on the road.

a cop giving you a ticket for going 70 on 60 is a fucking douchebag. learn to read traffic though
if you were inebriated the cop probably knew you were so you deserved the 45mph ticket
cops waiting at the downhill to get people are douchebags, but you were going 47 on a 30 thats retarded as fuck. protip: don't hit the gas on downhills
|
I've been driving for ~9 years now. I got one ticket not 2 months after I got my license. I've never gotten another one since.
Here is what I do. You know the "noone" else is around bs? Yeah, that is when you drive slow as crap. When there is a bunch of traffic, and most are at or slightly over the speed limit anyways, then going another 5-10 will hardly get you noticed. Just stay mostly with the flow of traffic and you'll be fine 99% of the time. Oh yea, and never drive if you've had ANYTHING alchoholic to drink. If you do, you're just an idiot plain and simple.
Also, pro-tip, I've never known anyone who got pulled over for going 70 in a 60..... I'll bet it was more like 80 in a 60, and he just put 10 over because going 20 over can be a ticket of ~$400 or more, and most cops really aren't douchebags.
|
If you drive to work everyday shouldn't you already know where the cop "hotspots" are? I know by heart all the hotspots around my neighbourhood and my body naturally reacts (i.e. drives within the speed limit). They're also probably there for a good reason - I know that someone died from getting hit by a speeding vehicle on a particular spot around, and a cop camps that spot pretty often nowadays.
Don't drink and drive. Period. Forget the legal alcohol limit or whatever, just don't drink and drive.
|
lol.
I don't think driving is the problem. I think you should just learn to be... well... less dumb.
|
With all the risks involved ...
Idiocy, don't drink and drive. Don't use a car if you can't afford the expenses you plan on having (gas, insurance, repairs, checks, tickets).
Speeding is meh, you break the law, you get caught, you pay up. Think of it as payment for getting to the destination faster sometimes. You just dont pay a bit every time you go speeding, you pay a lot when you get caught.
As for drinking, ask for a blood test if it's that low. By the time you get to the hospital, with a bit of effort it should be quite low.
On the other hand don't fucking drink and drive, ever. You'll be held accountable for any accident you have if you're drunk. On top of that you're under 21 and you're not even supposed to have a drop of alcohol in your blood. Still, even if you turn 21, DON'T EVER FUCKING DRINK AND DRIVE. You'll know why after your first crash after a beer or 2. Especially if it's not really your fault but you're still drunk. Was how a cousin of mine stopped drinking anything when driving. Think shitting his pants in fear of being accused for something that wasn't his fault did the trick.
As the people above have mentioned cops don't really give tickets for 10 above the limit. It's within their devices' tolerances usually. Your car also shows higher speed than real, the higher real speed the more inaccurate the meter is (usually up to 10 miles above real speed on the speedy end of the car).
I will never get people that break the law but seem not so ready to pay for it. Always be sure you can handle whatever comes your way when you cross the line. Or else just don't.
|

Amazing how many people don't understand this concept... But these days, the media and lawyers, working together, are trying to convince people that personal responsibility doesn't and shouldn't exist.
Get fat? Blame McDonalds. Get hurt being a moron? Blame the property owner.
Get a ticket? Blame the cop.
|
hahaha this is hilarious.
i mean once you get older sure you can try drinking like a single beer and then driving if your tolerance is high. but what kind of idiot drinks and drives when hes under 21. I am all for underage drinking but damn, you are just asking to get caught.
|
lol @ 4$ per gallon, its like 10 in europe
|
I had a similar experience with drinking and driving
I was 22 at the time Drinking age is 19 in Ontario I blew less than half of the legal limit But I was a G2 driver .. I spent over 3.5 years on a G2 being too lazy to go for my G test. As a G2 driver you are permitted a Blood alcohol limit of ZERO.
But I was and still am understanding the entire blame is put on me.
I received a 30 day mandatory suspension from the ministry of transportation I was booted off of my parents insurance as a secondary driver.. One full year AFTER the incident. The cheapest insurance I could find, as a secondary driver, was over 8,000 a year. 19,000 as a primary driver.
Hey! Just take responsibility for your actions. Lord knows i'm still paying for mine lol T_T
|
Wow, stay off the road. It will save peoples lives and save you some money.
+ Show Spoiler +I have gotten zero tickets so far while driving. I don't drive at or below the speed limit most of the time. It comes down to common sense and also owning a car that doesn't have the front end tilt forwards when applying the brakes before getting to a ghost car.

I have never gotten a ticket (nor would I drink at all and drive either and if I were to drink a beer or something then drive I wouldn't be retarded and go to fast so I can get pulled over).
In my almost 4 years of driving I go 5 above the speed limit and haven't been pulled over so why don't you just slow down a little bit? I am surprised you got a ticket going 70 in a 60 but the 45 over 30 is just why would you do that? Also you are driving at midnight and speeding a lot thats where cops love to pull people over encase they have been drinking or smoking pot or doing who knows what.
At least where I live driving at night is where you want to stay like the speed limit as thats when cops aren't as nice about not pulling people over.
|
I think you suck at driving, not the other way around.
|
So basically, driving sucks for you because you speed and drive around with alcohol in your system. If driving sucks so bad then please stop, I'm sure other people on the road will thank you for it.
|
So you're bitching that you're driving drunk while under 21....and that you're a speeder

Seriously, you are on a great track to kill someone. Drinking and driving is fucking dumb.
Personally, I always drive 10 over but always drive safely by keeping distance and having 100% attention of the road (never been pulled over). Although 10 over is kinda the norm anyways. New Hampshire, live free or die.
