UPDATE 2009/08/27
Talking about Balance is FINE. If someone wants to discuss the potential balance of the game, in a constructive manner, then there is absolutely no reason for you to to throw a hissy fit about the game not even being in beta yet.

At the same time, please try to not make too big assumptions about how the game will play if all you know is that the new siege tank does more damage than the old one.

- FrozenArbiter

UPDATE 2008/10/16
No more threads on SC2 being a trilogy, an official thread has been created and most other threads closed. Please keep your discussion of this in said thread. Please only create new threads about this if NEW information surfaces and it has not already been posted about.

In addition, I'm fairly tired of all the WC3 hatred - it does not reflect well upon TL as a whole and will not be tolerated just because hating on WC3 is "the cool thing to do".

Also removed this clause
Idea threads dedicated to new units, game styles, UI, etc. are superfluous and unnecessary. Instead, official threads will be started by staff where your new ideas on various aspects of the game can be submitted, read, and discussed by all. This is consistent with the nonexistence of threads dedicated to specific units.
as we no longer have the mentioned threads - might be reworded at a later date

-FrozenArbiter

UPDATE 2008/07/23
No more MBS threads. It brings out the worst in this section, and that is saying something. Everything you think you want to say has already been said.

- Mani

UPDATE 2008/03/28
From now on, anyone using the "Dune argument" will be temp banned. No warnings, just banned.

For those of you unaware of what it is, here's an explanation:
The "Dune argument" is that if we are so worried about skill, and think MBS is so detrimental to this, why don't we revert back to the Dune UI, where you could only select one unit at a time.

The counter-argument to this is obvious: If you want everything to be so easy, why don't we turn the game into an interactive movie? Why don't we just have the computer macro for you, and you can control the units!

See how silly both of these arguments are? This type of argumentation leads nowhere, as what's important is finding a balance, not going to various extremes to make silly points.

Thank you for your co-operation,
- FrozenArbiter

<a name='introduction'></a>
<h2>Introduction</h2>
The Starcraft 2 forum will be the most strictly moderated forum at TeamLiquid. Read these guidelines for your own sake, as “I didn’t know” will never be a valid excuse for transgressions.

The long awaited announcement of Starcraft 2 has sparked a renewed interest in Starcraft and Broodwar. This has led gamers, competitive and casual alike, to seek out sources of news and platforms of discussion. Blizzard’s announcement was followed shortly thereafter by the creation of the SC2 forum here at TL, fostering both excitement and apprehension about the game, as well as attracting fresh faces to the community.

News of SC2’s imminent release has brought upon us a slew of new users unfamiliar with the expectations of this community. While we embrace the arrival of these new members, we must insist on maintaining the standards of posting that have made TL.net what it is today. Doing otherwise would compromise the integrity of the discussion and camaraderie that is native to this forum.

To this end, the tolerance level for violations of the SC2 forum guidelines and the TL.net 10 Commandments will be far lower than its predecessors.

<a name='code'></a>
<h2>Code of Conduct</h2>
<ul><li>Respect - It’s a fundamental requirement in society. As it is in the physical world, we expect you to maintain civility towards your peers. This is our house. Only after you have given back what it has given you, will it become your house as well. Respect the forum veterans: they are the architects and engineers of our humble abode. The ban-hammers will be coming down faster and harder than ever.

<li>If there is a pointless bump, ignore it. By flaming the offender, you yourself are making a useless bump. Let the mods take care of the poster, and the thread will get bumped down on its own.

<li>Do not go off-topic; do not keep a thread off-topic. If someone attempts to steer the thread off-course, ignore him and contact a mod. The post will be deleted, and he will be warned or banned. This is similar in nature to the bump situation above; refraining from flaming someone for their idiocy demands mental fortitude, but this is what we expect from our posters. There are of course exceptions, such as when the original topic has led into discussion of a related subject, use common sense and don't derail threads with petty off-topic fighting.

<li>Do not spam. It should be obvious that “first”, “lol”, “rofl”, emoticons, and the like are unacceptable. Less obvious is that posts that do not add anything to the discussion should be and will be regarded as spam. To borrow the words of TKWL, “Nobody gives a rat's ass about misspelling or your gamei score 200 years ago.”

I would add that “what you think”, or “what you feel” about something is spam unless you provide your reasoning as to why you are posting your thoughts, why you feel it is important, and why you believe your claim to be correct. There are far too many posts that simply state one’s feelings without any substantial evidence for why we should lend your voice any credibility. If you do this, you are spamming.

<li>Do not quote without adding your own voice. By this, I am referring to the cases where a post is made solely by quoting someone else, with an optional "qft", "lol", "agreed", etc. Again, this is, and will be, treated as spam.
Quoting something you wish to see answered is acceptable (assuming the topic has moved on or fallen out of view).

<li>Educate yourself. If you don't know something, find out. Search, read our articles, or find out otherwise. Read the official Blizzard website and announcements. Questions that could have been answered through your own research and time input will be met with a cold shoulder, at best. Many of our members are knowledgeable, and if they make a point you don't understand, admit your lack of said knowledge and fix it.

<li>Be smart. Think about your own post: does it add to the discussion, has it has been said before. Redundant content is worse than old fashioned spam, in that it demands more from the moderation staff.

When replying to someone else's post - make sure you know what his/her post is about, that you understand it, and that your disagreement, agreement or addition is properly worded and shows your opinion clearly. Similarly, make sure that the wording of your post clearly conveys the exact message you want to put out. All too often, the poster will come back 5 posts later and claim “oh that’s not what I meant. You’ve all misinterpreted what I said.”Misunderstandings happen, try to be as clear as possible about what you mean, and when they do happen anyway, don't derail the thread because of it.

<li>Be reasonable. Criticism should be allowed in any discussion, but it should be done in a respectful and genial manner, and you are expected to back up your claims.

You are allowed to tell other posters that they are wrong. However, having an argument but absolutely refusing to listen to or give into the other side’s take accomplishes nothing in terms of advancing the discussion. Furthermore, it is often the cause of temper flares, unnecessarily inflammatory remarks, and other forms of abrasive behavior.

Try to understand the viewpoint and perspective of the other side, qualify its strengths and validity, and build upon that to back up your points. Do not blindly repeat “You are wrong, I am right,” no matter how pretty you decorate it.

We have observed posters simply repeating “That assertion is wrong” without giving ample or satisfactory explanation as to why for pages upon pages, ruining what could have been productive discussions. In fact, even if legitimate reasons are provided, downright hardheadedness is a detriment to the discussion, the thread, and the forum itself as a whole. We understand that you could get passionate about defending your stance, but take it overboard and you’re going overboard with it.

<li>Make replies based not on your own benefit and agenda, but for the good of the entire thread’s purpose. If your posting becomes a detriment to the integrity and development of the thread, you can expect appropriate repercussions.
</ul>
<a name='official'></a>
<h2>Official Threads</h2>

With the very public development of Starcraft 2, each new thread is a rehash of old, quickly becoming irrelevant due to the changing nature of units, (non-existing) strategy and theorycrafting. We will hence be limiting the discussion of such ideas to the appropriate official threads. This will keep the various thoughts to well-defined and clearly marked threads and will reduce the clutter in the SC2 forum as well.

The initial official threads are as follows (tags explained in the following section):
<ul>
<li>[D] Confirmed Terran Units
<li>[D] Confirmed Protoss Units
<li>[D] Confirmed Zerg Units
<li>[D] MBS Discussion
<li>[T] New Unit, gameplay and UI ideas
</ul>
Particular rules, guidelines and expectations for each thread will be laid out as necessary by the OP, and the thread will be moderated heavily. Blatant violations of said guidelines and the posting of applicable content elsewhere, without good reason, will be met with repercussions. It is very possible that the guidelines of a given thread will be stricter than those presented here.

Additionally, these official threads will be "vaulted" in order to avoid clutter. That is, they will be closed after a certain number of posts, a new one will be created and the op will link to all the past threads on the same topic.

If you believe that there is a need for an additional thread for discussion or otherwise, please contact an appropriate moderator to bring up your concerns.

<a name='acceptable'></a>
<h2>Acceptable Threads</h2>
<ul>
<li>[D] – Discussion threads will be preceded by [D]. These threads will be generic in nature so that they do not become irrelevant as the development situation of the game changes. For example, threads focusing on individual units will not exist. Threads such as “[D] Confirmed Terran Units” will be created instead, maintaining their relevance throughout the development cycle.

<li>[T] – Theorycrafting threads will be preceded by [T]. Starting threads like this without a good reason will lead to swift closure, and a warning. The original post needs to be of high quality, and with a clear goal/point.

<li>[O]– Official reports threads will be preceded by [O]. Official updates, statements or articles regarding SC2 will be posted under this tag.This also applies to 3rd party articles that are of high quality.

<li>[Int] - Interview threads will be preceded by [Int]. Simple enough. If you come across an interview with SC2 as its subject, post it under this tag.

When posting these articles it is expected that you give some background or opinion on the report itself. Providing a link and an one line comment is unacceptable. The thread will be closed for someone else with higher standards to present the material to us.

<li>[M] - Miscellaneous threads will be preceded by [M]. Threads that do not fall under either the acceptable or unacceptable categories will be permitted but monitored. In the event that it becomes useless or derailed, the thread will be closed with or without warning, and the guidelines may be modified to take the case into account.
</ul>
<a name='unacceptable'></a>
<h2>Unacceptable Threads</h2>
<ul>
<li>Polls, wherever they may be found, are detrimental to discussion in the SC2 forum. Poll results are essentially a conglomeration of opinions and feelings that the poster need not back up with argument and evidence. Multiple votes can be easily cast, rendering even the numbers useless.

<li>Opinion threads regarding specific units, UI and game mechanics are unnecessary. Unless you have had direct contact with a build of the game, are a tester, or are directly involved with development, your ideas and impressions will quickly become irrelevant due to the constantly changing nature of the development of the game. If you have thoughts you simply must express, you can make them be heard in the official discussion threads. This does not pertain to Starcraft2.com site updates - when a new unit or update is added to the site, feel free to create a thread about it, assuming one hasn't been created already.
</ul>
<a name='closing'></a>
<h2>In Closing</h2>

One of the fundamental traits that separates TeamLiquid from its competitors is the aspect of respect. We are not a message board where you can simply spout your tongue to anyone you like – respect must be earned, and offenses are met with repercussions. New users routinely earn our respect by displaying intelligence and by contributing to the community. We were all in your shoes once as newcomers, but learned to respect the rules and respect each other. Take this as a little reminder of the 10 Commandments that govern the site, which will make your time here much more enjoyable.

The purpose of these changes is not to cut down on what you can post. It is to regiment it so that as a community we can quickly decipher what is cream and what is not. We hope you understand our rationale and flourish under the new guidelines. Afterall, since blizzard reads these boards, it's important that the good bits aren't lost in the background noise.

Nobody posts in this thread, does that mean nobody reads it? I think any new member should be told to come here and sign their name here stating that they read this. If they break a rule, Ban.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

Charlie, how many times do I need to delete your posts from this thread? IT'S RIGHT THERE !!!!!!!!
"Do not post in this thread unless you are asking a question about the guidelines. Your query will be answered by the appropriate moderators.
Thank you for your cooperation."

This is why nobody is posting in this thread.

I'm just gonna leave your post in this time so you'll notice it next time. Btw, in case you are curious, the reason that rule is in place is so the post wont get cluttered up with non-questions

So the update is basically saying that no more threads about the MBS being too newbie friendly and that it should be reverted/taken out?

The update is saying don't make retarded arguments. There's obviously a middle ground where things can be discussed and debated without having to jump to an extreme as a weak ploy to discredit the other side.

I applaud this change.

While the Dune argument has some merit, mainly for making us address what is the "proper" amount of UI, but I was getting sick of seeing multiple 30 post idiots making it over and over.

No, the update is saying don't argue MBS using retarded exaggerations, specifically the "Dune Argument". Yes. I'm banning one specific argument.

Why? Because it's been done 5000000 times and leads nowhere and I don't want to have to see it (and the inevitable counter argument) again.

FA, Mani, FS, what do you think about including "no speculative threads on release dates, beta dates, and the whole lot"

it seems utterly pointless to have these pop up... ever.

Couldn't agree more and I'm glad you brought it up. Even if by some divine miracle someone discovered the release date, it still changes nothing, the game comes out when it comes out. I'm sick of seeing these kinds of threads.

The SC2 forum really ought not to exist. There isn't anything to talk about until the beta under all these conditions.

So why even have it, and be dismayed by the stuff that gets posted =[.

About last update: I suggest to make 1 thread about MBS, pros and cons about it, so it isn't brought up anywhere else. There are threads that by bringing new info start MBS discussions all over again with the sole intention of doing this and those new made discussions spread to other topics.

If (non-sticky ) OP would be made by someone from the staff or other respected user and updated with all new info regarding MBS and macro it should prevent that.

It's been done. There are multiple MBS threads out there with some good (and bad) discussion. That's what the search function is for.

Dude I didn't bring this up because I want to search for them. I read enough and participated in those discussions enough times not only on TL. I'm talking about attitude presented in most of them that caused last 2 updates of these guidelines. It's not changing.
