Watching more and more streams, I can mostly see that you're not hiding minimap buttons (i.e. Minimap terrain, player colors and Ping button) with overlay, but hiding social buttons (Menu, Game help, Friends online) and wrongly hiding idle worker/army buttons (but this maybe is neccesary too, depends on design and average aesthetic looking)
I think, that doesn't looks nice really. If you want to hide buttons with overlay, why not hide ALL buttons? They are out of place with different color from default skin. Like blue buttons on gold skin - that looks a bit strange.
Here are some examples from Protech and Idra streams why it looks bad and how it can be simply fixed.

Why you hide social buttons and do not do that with Minimap buttons? On some other streams I saw, that there are no hidden social buttons (Menu/Friends/Help). Reason to not hide these buttons? Isn't it better to cover these buttons too with same color as entire overlay? Many times I see something like blue buttons on black overlay, green overlay with ORANGE buttons, etc
In my humble opinion, you should take care at that small thing with designing overlays. If your buttons are visible through overlay, why not make them stylized same way as entire overlay? Or just hide with texture or other stuff like wires, flat texture, lighting and other special effects?
Here are good examples of overlay designing. No random buttons with different colors.

Yea, you make a good point. Don't know why people bother not covering them up, as a stream viewer they don't add anything and aren't necessary.

I really like what the Empire overlay did --- putting league/race in place of the minimap buttons.
Edit: I'm assuming the race one rotates since that person isn't playing protoss. But, I love the idea.

nor do they affect my viewing experience. I feel like its a non issue, but if you feel like its important, by all means swing for the fences OP!

I prefer them covered since people don't use them.

For the viewers, it's only a waste of space (imho) that's why i always cover them, sometimes they even take away attention from the center. The only button that i leave there it's the Army buttom, an useful information, as i've done in the White-Ra overlay.
This is a great feedback, thanks OP.

I've never, ever cared about seeing the player's FACE.
Hands? sure. Face? WHY.

Hands? sure. Face? WHY. It's so you know that it's actually that person streaming. Sometimes when I watch streams, I can't help but think it's someone else playing on his account, thus generating ad revenue for him which he does not deserve.

That is such a small thing that I've never even thought about it. The bigger issue to me is when the overlay is so gigantic that it takes up half the screen.
|
Idk it never bugged me. Sometimes personal issues that one person may have are just not exactly thread worthy. I mean the issue seems so small, why not make overlays yourself and approach players to use them.

Some players even don't care about such small aesthetics like graphic settings (low blurred textures or high sharp textures, when difference isn't that big) or avatar (kachinsky all the time) or decals (default ones all the times instead nicer from 500-750-1k wins or from levels).
Why not talk about small things too? Someone can care about them, someone not, it all depends on people and their feeling. From my side, this is small suggestion will allow future overlay designers to make their overlays a bit better

Facial expressions. It matters much more than you think it does, having a webcam and a mic.

I think, watching hand position and/or keyboard with flashing buttons (which were clicked at the moment) is more usefull, than facial expressions
