I know to shift and do something and I just recently learned F2 is a control group for my entire army. What are the other official tricks that I should know and what are the examples of how I would use them. I'm a zerg player so I don't use the shift as much as I imagine a protoss or terran would. I also know about ctrl groups although I didn't know about shift ctrl until Star 2.
what are the little things about this game that I don't know about yet that will help improve my mechanics?
My apologies if there is already something about this. I see a lot of things about strategy that is above me. I feel like things like this will help me to play more efficiently which I think is more important to me right now.

As zerg control click to add all eggs to group so you can have an easier time rallying Dont use the select all army hotkeys cause u dont need it and it clumps up your army = easier way to throw away the game.
And if youre being attacked, dont cancel any upgrades because if the building dies you get 100% refund back. Same for raxes queues, if your raxes get killed when 5 marines are in it, full refund for everything. So if there is a chance your evo gets saved, your upgrade will finish a tiny bit faster =D

Dunno, if this helps, but that's how I macro drones into gas: If you select 3 harvester from your mineral line in order to put them into your gas, right click your extractor, then hit "c". If the harvester was holding minerals, it will first bring the minerals to your hatchery and then go into gas.

ctrl click a unit in the selected units area to select all of that unit only, or ctrl click a unit in an area to select them on the battlefield to select whats in your vision of that unit.
double click also selects the same stuff and is preferred, but in combat I like ctrl clicking (ctrl click stalkers for easier blink or focus fire, ctrl click marine to run behind marauders vs banes etc.)
Camera binds for each of your bases, I have mine bound to f1 f2 f3 f4, to bind them shift f1, shift f2 etc.
you can rebind spacebar to go between bases if thats your style of injecting if you play zerg. I prefer f1 f2 f3 f4 but it varies between people
you can queue exactly what you want units to do by shift-clicking. say I want a group of Marines and marauders to snipe a base I've scouted, from across the map I can hold down shift and right click to a place near the base, press T, right click the base, and right click away. Same with stalkers for example. assuming I have vision I can move command them somewhere and then shift B to a location and shift move command so they will continually blink and not block each other. Or for zerg shift burrow etc. There's tons you can do.
Shift clicking units in the selection bar removes them from selection so you can select a bunch of workers send them all to gas shift click 3, send another 3 to gas shift click anther 3 and send to minerals. also if you select 3 to go into gas from minerals pressing C will make them return minerals if they have any before swapping it for gas which would result in lost minerals if you hadn't otherwise.
You can rebind control groups 1-0 to any key you want, I have 0 bound to `, and 9 bound to W. I have trouble going past 7 so it lets me add in more control groups for various things a lot more easily.

Koreans use their mouse to an insane degree
That was one of the glaring differences I saw between watching Stephano and other foreigners - Stephano uses his mouse for about everything.
That single thing rocketed my mechanics, just using the mouse for everything and using it actively and constantly.
Building = hotkeys
But I started dragging and box selecting my army instead of hotkeys and it really helps players be more mobile, instead of hotkeys for army you drag your army out with mouse drags.
Koreans = mouse

very useful tip imo. if you use grid layout its the "s"key, just testet it.
my 2 cents: base camera is default on shiftback, and should have an alternative key binding which is do able easier. so one can jump from base to base very quick.i have it on on "shift+r"

Is there a way to make each of my queens larvae inject at the same time? Is there a way to spread units in different directions other than clicking each?

nope

On May 11 2013 14:52 Wrangler wrote: Is there a way to make each of my queens larvae inject at the same time? No, not exactly. There are methods to inject queen by queen very quickly, ask Zerg players about that ![](/mirror/smilies/smile.gif)
Is there a way to spread units in different directions other than clicking each? Selecting small groups of units and moving them at different points is still the best way, but you can try to set your units on patrol if you have time before a battle. They'll start patrolling and will naturally spread a little when their movements become desynchronized. There is no automatic way to do this well though, of course.

Bring a worker and command it to build a structure in the middle of your units. They will scatter, if even just a couple grid spaces.
Other than that, 1000 tips thread -------->>>>>>

1. It took me a while to realize that you only need to use shift to add units to control groups. For a long time I used shift to ad them in to my current control and held control to add to control group as opposed to just holding shift and pressing the control group's number.. I'm not sure if anyone else did that...
2. If you are using standard hotkey setup and find you need more control, try using keys like space and tab as active unit hotkeys for 9 and 0
3. If you play zerg, try adding unhatched eggs to your current control groups and see if it works for you.

Here's a VoD of me coaching a beginner player, even if you're a higher level you might not use a lot of the mechanics we go over in the first half of this vod, and they all make playing zerg much easier: http://www.twitch.tv/x5_pig/c/2224568

backspace to cycle hatcheries, but I recommend changing that to a key near your left hand, I use the `/~ key myself

You can use the pause break key to print screen to pause and resume! It does have a function!

A + left click on the ground = attack move. It's about the most important command in the game and I don't think it's ever explained. It orders the selected units to fight their way to the specified destination and attack everything on the way.
Shift + number = add selected units to a control group.
You can cast abilities using the minimap. For example, I select all my queen, press V and then click roughly on the locations of my hatcheries on the minimap.
Download SC2Gears if you are interested in analyzing your replays.
If you call down mules directly on a mineral field, they'll start mining on their own. No need to order them to mine.
You can assign individual rally points to morphing zerg eggs that override the hatchery's rally point. You can also add them to a control group.
If you have a mixed group of units selected, use Tab to cycle through the subgroups and access the different units' abilities.
You can hold down a unit production key to build a lot of them quickly, which is particularly useful for zerg players. It's advisable to modify your Windows keyboard settings to have a low repeat delay and maximum repeat speed.
Use Ctrl + click to select all units of a kind. Use shift to add or remove units from the current selection. The two can be combined. This works on the main game screen and also with the wireframe models that show the current selection.
