R3 Week 4 Lookback
By: Pokebunny
With an abridged week four, we didn't see too much move in the standings for round three, but there still were some interesting stories to follow. Notable storylines include Fantasy's benching after his disastrous showings in round three, Woongjin continuing to terrorize all of Proleague, EG-TL struggling significantly, and SKT Zergs redefining their legacy. As we move into the last matches of round three, there are still big questions to be answered: many aces have faltered in round three, and we'll see if they can pull it back together for a strong finish. With Heart of the Swarm close on the horizon, Proleague is going as strong as ever as we approach the halfway point in the six round season.

KeSPa 8th team
![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/teams/icons/218.png)
The match started off on a grim note for Team 8 after their top round two performer Argo fell to TurN, continuing to struggle along with much of Team 8 in round three. Team 8 was unable to TurN (heh heh) things around, with a lone victory by Terminator unable to make a difference as Team 8's top three players all lost in disappointing fashion. The Khan Protoss brothers Stork and JangBi finally seem to have found their groove in SC2, and while they're still not the top of the top players, they've been putting up respectable performances as of late. Reality continued his hot round three performance with a win over ABLM, and ace RorO was not even needed in what was a decisive 4-1 victory for Samsung.
Samsung's horrible start to round one left little hope for the boys in blue, but their performance since then has been quite impressive, rising from an 0-5 start to the middle of the pack. They now look like a fairly competent team from top to bottom: RorO has been a top performing ace in round three as he was prophesied to be at the initial KeSPA switch, JangBi and Stork no longer look like they're flailing around in SC2, and the rest of the team has been contributing wins here and there. The big surprise this round has been Reality's performance, and while it's too soon to say if he's really going to be a top Terran or not, the wins are much appreciated in Samsung's quest to return to glory.
The story for Team 8 has been a struggle of mediocrity, as they fall to 9-11 overall after a disappointing round three. With Argo and Cure greatly exceeding pre-season expectations, Team 8 seemed to be off to a good start considering what their lineup looked to be, but it hasn't quite been enough to put them in a postseason slot quite yet. There's still plenty of time for them to jump back into contention, but they'll need to show some more consistency and have a real ace step up to get there.

Things continued as usual for what now looks to be the runaway favorites for Proleague, as Woongjin improved to an impressive 15-5 record as they rolled over CJ 4-1. CJ's herO was the sole bright spot, continuing his extremely strong round three performance and even implementing carriers in a PvZ macro game with a slight twist. Still, Woongjin's lineup looked as strong as ever, with every member of the team looking to be in good shape from top to bottom. The games were actually fairly interesting and worth watching, with Flying managing to kill Songduri's lair with a void ray/zealot attack, sOs and EffOrt dueling for 45 minutes before EffOrt finally fell, and Light managing to top sKyHigh after a mech vs mech battle ended in a battlecruiser finale. sOs vs EffOrt was especially exciting, showing that there still is an art to WoL PvZ despite the matchup being stale for quite some time. Overall this was by far the best match of the week.
Woongjin continues to impress, with a 5-1 record this round showing their remarkable consistency after 5-2 records in both previous rounds. They have shown they can do it all, with strong aces succeeding in the all-kill format and supporting players pulling through in the standard Proleague format. They definitely seem to be odds-on favorites for this year's Proleague, but with the season only about halfway over, there's still plenty of Starcraft to be played. CJ stays among the middle of the pack, falling to 3-3 this round and 10-10 overall, but still barely holding on to a playoff spot, tied with SKT and Samsung but ahead in set wins. With an impressive ace performance from herO this round, they just need the rest of the team to stay consistent and EffOrt to pull it together.

SKT Zergs continue to be a big story in round three, with s2, soO, and Sacsri all winning their games to power SKT to a 4-2 victory despite Rain and Fantasy struggling. Fantasy was finally benched after his abysmal round three performance, going win-less until he was finally taken out of the lineup. Rain couldn't manage to find a win either, but s2 and soO especially have continued to perform big for SKT this round. STX looked to be their struggling selves of old after starting off round three very well, with Innovation finding a win and Trap taking a surprise PvP victory with excellent positioning but the supporting cast failing to hold up against what appeared to be very winnable matches. SKT surprisingly manages to stay afloat and put up a strong performance in round three despite Fantasy's horrible woes, with the infamous insult "SKT Zerg" quickly losing meaning.
STX and SKT both have gotten some redemption for previous disappointments in earlier rounds lately, but it was SKT who continued to rise upward. Still, SKT has quite a bit to prove, as they along with KT had been the former kings of Proleague. STX still seems to have a very weak lineup on paper, and they'll need to continue to perform well to prove to the world that they can be playoff contenders.

With KT and EG-TL both looking atrocious in round three, at least one of them was guaranteed to improve their standing, and it was KT that rolled through EG-TL for the third straight round in another 4-0 romp. Flash got back on track with a win over JYP, Myungsik managed his second upset in the round by beating Jaedong (after JangBi - and he didn't even cannon rush this time!), Carno blowing through with a three base timing, and PuMa going back to his failing ways and losing to hitmaN.
EG-TL continues to just look flat out bad. While they have a strong lineup on paper, pretty much no one is playing up to their expected level, which raises a lot of questions about what could be going wrong. Is it an issue of the KeSPA regime just beginning to take over the SC2 world? Is the EG-TL house doing something horribly wrong? Are their players just not as good as we thought? Whatever the case, EG-TL needs to do something before they're stuck in the cellar for the rest of the season.
KT righted the ship a bit after a five match losing streak, but they still have a lot to prove. Their performance has pretty much been the opposite of round one - rather than winning unexpectedly against aces, their team of Flash + a bunch of good-but-not-great players has pretty much been losing to the average players rather than beating them. Their formula seems to still be sound, with Flash winning most of his games and a combination of the rest managing to pull through a couple times, but it just hasn't worked out that way for round three. Still, for some reason I do have more faith that they'll pull it back together, unlike EG-TL which really has a ton to prove.

Ace: Entombed Valley
Oh dear, oh dear. We're down to the final four Proleague matches of Wings of Liberty, and although the rankings have somewhat solidified , the middle section of the ranking is still very much in flux. KT broke its streak of losses to take their second place back as CJ, SKT and Samsung all ended up at 10-10. And even though Team 8, STX and EG-TL are stuck with negative scores and have no way of changing that in Wings of Liberty, there is a distinct feeling that this last week of WoL matches will be very strange.
Originally, I was sure that everyone not playing in GSL would abandon WoL in March, but given the fact that no one has access to the HotS beta anymore, this week will determine whether or not everyone stayed with WoL in preparation for the last week, or if some had fully switched over and joined Parting in preparation for HoTS. The only thing that's for certain this week is that Woongjin Stars has grown supremely confident in their abilities. Rightly so, as they are sitting on a 15-5 (+29) record, four wins ahead of KT Rolster.
Woongjin's confidence is certainly showing in their only week five match, with the Mekia (one game played so far) and Rudy (zero televised matches) starting off for Woongjin against KHAN. But other than Woongjin giving their rookies some playtime, the other seven Proleague teams are dead serious about this last week, giving us four matches with more or less every A-teamer having a go at it. Notable matches include Stephano vs. ParalyzE (better known as the battle to decide who has better hair) Effort vs. TY, herO vs. Argo and Flying vs. RorO. In general, this week will be the week to decide what mark the teams leave on Wings of Liberty. A negative record over almost 25 matches isn't what you want to look back on going into Heart of the Swarm, and though perhaps it matters less than the actual scores, pride also plays a significant part for the players.
The match of the week goes to Woongjin Stars vs. Samsung KHAN. Although Flying vs. RorO has the potential to be quite good, especially if Flying comes as prepared as he did against Stephano in Code A, this match is not interesting because of star-studded lineups or three showdowns between Brood War bonjwas, it's interesting for another reason entirely. Woongjin has consistently performed better than every other team in Proleague this season with a lineup not as filled with former champions and hyped-up players as many other teams. Their roster is extremely deep and they have several players capable of filling the ace role. As such, it isn't completely unreasonable to think that they're doing something right in practice. A lineup with Aria, Rudy and Mekia doesn't look interesting on paper, but their performance will show us whether or not Woongjin got lucky and had five-six players who adapted well to SCII, or if their practice regimen works better than all other teams'. So in a way, this match is a preview of what's to come – decided mostly by how convincing their rookies look in their games.
Of course, Samsung KHAN is no joke. Their roster isn't as unfairly deep as Woongjin's, but they might very well have the best ace player in RorO. With Stork and Jangbi set up to play before game six, Samsung will hope to hold out until game six and a possible ace match, where RorO's confidence under pressure will put the advantage with Samsung. But even if the ace match is forced, Woongjin's lineup assures that no matter what happens in this series, it should be (mostly attributed to the questionable two starting players for Woongjin) a fight to the death and a fitting end to round three of Proleague.
If you're still no fan of RorO after he killed off Taeja and ensured another GSL ZvZ final last week, or you're not interested in watching rookies duke it out, CJ Entus vs. Team 8 is the match you should watch. Luckily for us viewers, we've ended up with a large number of good matches in this series, with Effort vs. TY being the first match, a top-level PvP in herO vs. Argo in the second, a potentially good TvT with sKyHigh vs. Cure scheduled for the fourth match. The match's only Code S player in TRUE (believe it or not) is scheduled to duke it out against Bong in game five, which could either turn out to be a really good match, with both players being quite good but not very hyped, or a complete stomp as one player brings better preparation and better play than the other.

Fantasy Spotlight
by monk
Biggest Winners
Anyone who won a match
Because the previous week was a short one with half the normal number of matches, everyone who won a match garnered three to five points. Though no one really stood out in terms of fantasy proleague points, sOs gets a special mention this week for winning the most epic and hard fought game against Effort.
Biggest Losers
Anyone who lost a match
Same as the biggest winners section. A lot of players lost their matches, but no one really failed spectacularly.
![Terran (T)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Ticon_small.png)
After a fantastic round one and a decent round two, Fantasy comes to us in round three having not won a single match. With Fantasy not playing in the last two weeks, he looks locked in for the worst pick of the entire round.
The Optimal Team
With only one set of matches being played last week, there wasn't much room for many changes. Not surprisingly, this week's optimal team is the exact same as last week's. The top players of this round continued to do well as none of our top six picks this week lost their match, each gaining a few points.

Fantasy Archetype Update
by Otolia
At the beginning of the round, we put together four sample teams, each following a particular strategy commonly used in fantasy proleague. These strategies include:
- Picking based on Round one results
- Picking based on Lineups
- Picking based on Brood War skill
- Picking a full SKT team
Round One's Bests
The second round was a king of the hill format, very different in terms of dynamics from a traditional Proleague round. As player costs are mostly assigned by round 2 results, we decided to build a token team based on the first round results to see if there would be a significant difference in terms of outcome. This team will be subject to trades both on the main and anti teams with the same limitations as a normal fantasy team.
Week 4 Recap
Team :
![[image loading]](http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/images2/d/da/Rolsterlogo_std.png)
Captain :
![Protoss (P)](https://tl.net/tlpd/images/Picon_small.png)
Players :
Carno(Stats) - (4p)
Soulkey - (2p)
TY - (0p)
Flash - (4p)
Crazy-Hydra – (2p)
Anti - team :
Despite the good results of KT Rolster who crushed the foreign hope with yet another 4-0, bringing points for Flash, Carno and Crazy, the rest of the team didn't do as well. Rain curiously lost a PvP to Trap, Soulkey's team won before he could play and TY could not overcome his TvP weakness against JangBi. The points gained this week were mostly brought by the traded players which is nice for this kind of team.
The anti-team fared fairly well with hyvaa bringing no points (while our traded Stork would have brought four) and Shine only one. However, Reality won and it is perhaps time to realize he's improved since round one.
Week 4 Preview and Trades
The big names of this team (Rain, Flash and Soulkey) are very likely to win as they all get their best match-ups or weak opponents (vs. Zenio, Last and hOpe). Carno and Crazy should have a fairly easy time too but considering how KT has done in the past nothing is guaranteed. TY plays another ace-level players in EffOrt and it could prove difficult. On the anti-team, we expect everyone but Reality to win which is unfortunate since we don't have the room to trade him.
Betting on Lineups
Each week, there are some match-ups that we believe are hugely in favor of one of either team or players. This « per week » team will be drafted on week one and we will try to find the best trades each week with no consideration as to how the players can do in the future.
Week 3 Recap

Captain :

Players :
Innovation(Bogus) - (3p)
Zest(P7GAB,Wooki) - (2p)
Bong - (0p)
Revival - (1p)
JYP - (0p)
Anti - team :
The week was rather quiet for this band of mercenaries, which isn't a good sign when the goal is to show the importance of lineup betting in FPL. Unfortunately, Innovation was the only player who won on our team. In addition, Zest was the only player on a winning team, gaining that +1 team win bonus. Thankfully though, our anti-team scored a similarly low amount of points.

Innovation and Zest are expected to win in the KT vs. STX match. Bong plays the mystery, TRUE, whose spectacular GSL results are the opposite of his Proleague ones. His teammate, EffOrt, faces another good but apparently inconsistent player in TY. EG-TL should catch a break this week with favorable match-ups for Revival and Jaedong. Finally, we also traded BrAvO for Light since BrAvO won't be playing.
All-in on SKT T1
We all saw that an all KT Rolster team could win a round during round 1. This round, it's impossible to take all of KT's best with 30 points but it's possible to do so with their arch-rivals SKT T1. With only 28 points in total and no anti-team, let's see what they can do. Trading will be employed if needed.

Captain :

Players :
Finally, SKT is winning games! It won't put them among the top dogs of this season, a status seemingly reserved for Woongjin Stars, but at least they are back to a .500 record. With Fantasy being out of the lineups, we decided to put Paralyze in his stead and the up-and-coming protoss showed he could be another reliable support player. BeSt didn't play and his back-up,

Best doesn't play this week; fantasy does. Easy trade.
[spoiler=BW Elephants]
Betting on BW Skill
Proleague was, for more than a decade, the main event in Korean Brood War. Salaries were negotiated based on Proleague results and many known players made themselves a name before moving on to win StarLeagues. The paradigm of this team is simple: we pick the big BW names and reminisce.

Captain :

Players :

Carno(Stats) - (4p)
Light - (4p)
SoulKey - (2p)
BeSt - (1p)
Anti - team :
Argo(Jaehoon) - (0p)
Terminator - (4p)
- Hyuk - (1p)
Much like the "week by week" team, the elephants didn't have a great week. Jaedong continued to disappoint, EffOrt lost to sOs, and neither Soulkey nor BeSt got to play. Only Light and Carno managed to seize victory, continuing their legacy.
On the anti-team last week, we saw Terminator win for Team 8 while Argo surprisingly lost against TurN. Meanwhile Hyuk continued hanging out with Bisu on the bench.

That's a trade that many a forum dweller would have gladly done in the BW days. Though Light was always great at Proleague, he can't really be compared to two-time OSL champion Jangbi.
