R3 Week 3 Lookback

By: monk, Pokebunny and Zealously

Last week was truly a week of winner take all. Teams either flourished, walking away with absurd map scores differentials. Or they completely flopped, hardly taking but one game in two matches of play. As the finals matches of WoL Proleague draw to a close, we begin seeing a better picture of the hierarchy of of the teams. One team has risen above all the rest, now incapable of being dethroned as WoL Proleague champion. Meanwhile, the rest fight for scraps as the margins for the rest of the placements remain within a hair of each other.

EG-TL's woes continued after the break, as Stephano's victory over EffOrt was the sole bright spot in a 1-4 loss to CJ Entus. A big win for Stephano's traditionally weak ZvZ, the game escalated to hive tech broodlord battles perhaps sooner than we might have been used to. What was expected to be a triumphant return for the EG-TL ace, TaeJa, was also a disappointment, as what looked to be a relatively easy match-up in sKyHigh proved to be too much for an ailing TaeJa. The rest of the EG-TL losses were just disappointing defeats, mostly within the first 15 minutes, not giving a lot of hope for a team that came into Proleague expected to be the favorite.

EG-TL desperately needs hope, and with TaeJa's return not enough to pull them up, there aren't a whole lot of beacons of hope to look for. Jaedong has been average, Stephano has been decent, though not enough to pull the team through, HerO has been decidedly average, and the rest of the team has been struggling. CJ continues to be on the rise, with a 4-1 victory highlighted by big wins from the supporting cast in Bong and sKyHigh show that they are a force to be reckoned with even with EffOrt's struggles as of late.

While KT put out a strong first impression with their excellent performance in Round 1, Woongjin Stars has been the true silent killer of Proleague, far outperforming the stars of KT, SKT, and EG-TL with their solid lineup top to bottom. We saw evidence of this in a big way as Woongjin's aces mostly came through and the supporting cast picked up some big wins on their way to a 4-1 destruction of KT, highlighted by Flying taking the final match over Flash. Flash vs Flying featured uncharacteristic fail from the KT ace, with his 4 rax marine push unable to do damage to a fast 3rd base off of two gateways from Flying despite having a significant build advantage. Bravo vs Crazy was a classic Arkanoid game, with both players staying on three bases the majority of the game, but Bravo managed to stay far more cost-efficient than Crazy and managed to hold a fourth base for an impressive victory. KT's sole victory came from Zest's extended sentry-immortal allin prevailing over ZerO.

While Flash's loss was certainly a disappointment, the overall result was mostly expected, with Woongjin's frontmen showing stellar play top to bottom. Aside from that, not a lot can be taken from this match - Woongjin simply outplayed KT overall, with good preparation and solid execution. KT is definitely still a top team with their front five being good enough to match pretty much any team in the league, but they met their match in Woongjin and fell hard (even with the notable omission of free from the lineup from Woongjin).

Samsung KHAN
[image loading]

When Samsung KHAN and SK Telecom T1 faced off last time, SKT was handed yet another loss as RorO barely managed to edge out Rain in the ace match. This time around, SKT was out for revenge, and saying that they got it would be putting it mildly. With soO stealing the first match of the series away from Shine, things snowballed out of control as s2 and BeSt delivered two more victories to their team in quite convincing fashion. To close things out, Rain went up against Jangbi on Cloud Kingdom where he showcased his vastly superior late-game knowledge, with a better composed, better positioned army, smashing Jangbi in the much hated laser war-stage of the game.

Not many teams can say this, but I don't think this loss hit Samsung too hard. First of all, they were coming into this match 3-0 on the back of a crazy record in Round 2, whereas SKT had a lot more invested into this match with Proleague almost always being their sole focus. Secondly, they still have some of their dignity after beating SKT in Round two. And although Samsung didn't look too good in this series, RorO didn't even get to play and it is quite likely that he was preparing for GSL either way. RorO has gone from being an inconsistent, sometimes-mediocre, sometimes-great player to just really good all the time, and whenever GSL is over for him (and HoTS Zerg isn't having as much trouble), he can devote his full attention to Proleague again and be that ace player that tipped the balance for Samsung in Rounds two and three.

STX Soul
[image loading]

STX_Bear's first ever Starcraft II match ended up being a great success, as he took the first game of the series against Savage, creating more puns than even roaches in the process. From that point on, Team 8 was hard pressed to find their footing. Although Argo did manage to win his game against Dear on Cloud Kingdom, Team 8's other key players, Cure and TY, were beaten by Innovation and more notably, a well-prepared Comet. Team 8 did manage to bring in another victory as Terminator took down Trap, but in the end Last was able to close it out for STX before Team 8 could bring out Acehoon.

This match essentially put a stop to Team 8's quite rapid ascent, giving them their second loss of the round. Although Argo remains consistent and other players on Team 8 take turns in bringing their best play, they aren't always able to close things out or stay alive until the ace match, where they now have one of the best ace players in the league. For STX, solid performances from the rookies can only mean good things going forward, creating a more solid roster than their previous mostly one-man show of Innovation + friends. STX has actually put together some fairly impressive performances, but they have had some trouble closing maps out due to the lack of four solid, consistent players. If they can raise one or two rookies to become consistent performers, things will be great for STX SouL.

Woongjin Stars vs EG-TL was a battle of the best performing team in Proleague against the worst. This was a truly David and Goliath story, with EG-TL surprisingly playing the role of David. Unfortunately, EG-TL apparently forgot to bring their slingshot as they were unceremoniously trounced in 4-0 fashion.

The best game of the night was TaeJa against free in what should have been an easy win for the + Show Spoiler +
GSL semifinalist.
In a tense nail-biting game, TaeJa pressured free with his large late-game bio army, consistently reinforcing with streams of units. And while free kept on losing his 4th base, his counter-harassment proved successful, dealing significant damage to TaeJa's economy. Battles constantly raged on, often won by razor sharp margins, and it would not be till near the end that we realized that TaeJa had chosen not to remake his lost SCVs and that his pressure was indeed all-in. While watching this game, we couldn't shake the feeling that the TaeJa of mid-2012 would have won this game, that a fully healed TaeJa would have found some way to micro his way to victory. This game probably marks the last we see of TaeJa in WoL Proleague, but at least he put up a good show.

The KT squad, and especially Flash, needed a big bounceback performance as they slip closer to losing their playoff spot. Playing the unproven Barracks, losing a pair of games to the two Zerg aces of CJ, and Flash taking a huge upset loss for the second day in a row all led to a 4-0 defeat for the former kings of Proleague. Flash once again lost a game that pretty much made no sense, with openings out of 2011 leading to a bizarre base trade that Bong somehow managed to win. Cliff notes: KT got owned.

Eventually, there comes a time when you have to ask what's going on with a player. On SK Telecom especially, those times seem to come fairly frequently. Although Bisu is and has been ridiculed for months now, Fantasy was a strong performer for a long time but has not been looking nearly as convincing recently, not in Proleague and certainly not in GSL.

But the five-time OSL finalist's fall does not seem overly concerning for SKT, having apparently regained their footing after unimpressive performances in Round 2. Rain and s2 brought down T8's most significant players Argo and Cure, and with two other SKT Zergs, Sacsri and soO, also delivering, there was little Team 8 could do against the opposing team's superior depth. After their absolutely abysmal performance in Round two, every win SKT can get their hands on is worth a lot. With the next round also being the standard Proleague format, they will most certainly look to finish up the WoL-part of Proleague with a positive score. It must be mentioned that Zergs are having somewhat of a hard time in HoTS at the moment, and with how important the SKT Zergs have become to the team's line-up, every win they can grab in WoL becomes even more important.

Samsung KHAN vs. STX SouL ended up being (almost) unusually predictable, with the players on STX finally getting together and all having a good enough day at the same time. Although Innovation started off with a much expected win over Sola, the more unexpected result was what came next. Bear, the 16 year-old STX rookie who appeared last week to win his first ever game of televised Starcraft II, continued to convince the STX coaches as he beat none other than RorO, Samsung's ace player and + Show Spoiler +
GSL semifinalist
, bringing out the massive upset with some solid Zerg play on Caldeum 3. Not only did this mean that Bear kept on showing solid play, something STX has desperately needed from more players, it also meant that the title of Unofficial World Champion that RorO had previously stolen from Life now is in the hands of an STX rookie that might not see that much play time, and certainly none in GSL.

Although Reality and Stork did manage to win two games, clutch performances from Last and Trap eventually sealed the deal in the favor of STX. As such, STX ended week 3 with a very respectable 4-1 record, their only loss coming from the team everyone loses to - Woongjin Stars. For Samsung, they were on the brink of reaching a positive score but is now stuck just one match away from a neutral 10-10 record, which will doubtlessly be what they set their eyes upon as we go into Week 4. Although their overall score is still better than SouL's, their record in Round 3 actually tipped over into the negative, and they need to start winning again or they might risk falling back into the pit of mediocrity.

We're down to the final Wings of Liberty play-week in Proleague (split in half – four series this week, four games the next), and the league rankings have begun to stabilize somewhat. Of course, this is just in time for them to be turned on their heads yet again once the switch to HoTS occurs. In the end, Woongjin Stars proved to be the most consistent, currently sitting on an overall score of 14-5 with a +26 map score. With CJ and KT coming in behind them at 10-19 (+8, +6 respectively), no team can threaten to take their first place from them.

While on the subject of having first places taking away, KT Rolster is currently sitting at 0-5 (9-20 map score), dropping down to third place, only a loss away from potentially dropping even further down the rankings. KT's transformation from top team to the worst performing team in SPL has mirrorred Samsung's rise from bottom to well, not bottom. With HoTS drawing closer, KT can survive losing one more series (though they might not survive the embarrassment of losing every single series of the round) if they can bounce back with strong HoTS play, but that's not a safe option and they'll have to do whatever they can to at least bring one win to the table this week.

The most interesting thing to note on the player side of things is Fantasy's absence from SKT's roster this week. Without jumping to too many conclusions, something must be amiss for the team's Terran ace to be replaced by hudadak (AKA Sorry), a player with zero recorded games. It could be that Fantasy requested some time off for one reason or another and the coaches decided that hudadak is looking pretty good, but with how Fantasy has been looking in his recent games, this will be worrying news for the SKT fans.

This week will be all about the bottom half of the rankings. KT with their 0-5 score will want to grab at least one win to prevent themselves from looking completely outmatched. EG-TL hasn't been able to perform even with Taeja on their roster, also stuck on 1-4 with -11 map score. Team 8 and Samsung are also in some trouble, both stuck with negative map scores despite looking much better than they did earlier in the season. With these four teams matched up against each other, they'll have to fight tooth and nail to save face in the last WoL matches.

The match of the week is probably Team 8 vs. Samsung KHAN. Although both teams were absolute disasters in Round 1, they shaped up to get out of the last places, and now they're fighting for fifth/fourth/third (any of SKT, CJ, Samsung and T8 could end up 4-3 and 11-10 overall depending on how their matches go). As such, there is some significance to this match that the coaches will not have missed. While some of the scheduled matches look like they might end up being one-sided stomps, Stork – Cure and Jangbi – TY could end up being good matches, with the potential of a great Argo – RorO ace match on Cloud Kingdom to decide who gets the better score in Round 3.

If you're not a fan of RorO, with his tendency to kill off the fan favorites, Woongjin Stars vs. CJ Entus is looking like it might be the highest level match so far this round, with ZerO – herO and sOs – EffOrt confirmed, and Soulkey – Hydra scheduled for the sixth match. All of those six players have the potential to appear in ace match, making preparing someone for the ace match especially difficult for both teams. If you're not as interested in the storylines and only watch for the games, Woongjin vs. CJ is without a doubt the series to watch.

Biggest Winners

(P)Flying (14 points, +9), (Z)Bear (11 points, +9)
Both these low cost players showed their true worth this week, winning two matches each.

Woongjin Stars(18 points, +10), CJ Entus(10 points, +10), SK Telecom T1(11 points, +9)
The week was truly winners take all as the top three teams walked away with 8-1, 8-1, and 8-2 map scores, robbing poor teams like KT Rolster and EG-TL of their precious fantasy points.

Biggest Losers

(T)Flash (4 points, + 0), (T)TaeJa (1 point, +0)
Flash loses two games this week in hilarious fashion to two very low tier players. Meanwhile, TaeJa's reappearance into Proleague turned out to be a big flop. After losing his first game to Classic due to a failed proxy, he added a second loss this week to a tense macro game against free.

KT Rolster (-6 points, -5), EG-TL (-6 points, -5)
Both KT Rolster and EG-TL continue to have off-rounds with 0-5 and 1-4 records respectively. While they were both once regarded as top contenders at one point, they have since fallen drastically.

The Optimal Team

Underdogs populate the Optimal Team again this week as Flying and s2 hop on-board while Reality and RorO make a reappearance.

Fantasy Archetype Update

by Otolia

At the beginning of the round, we put together four sample teams, each following a particular strategy commonly used in fantasy proleague. These strategies include:
  • Picking based on Round one results
  • Picking based on Lineups
  • Picking based on Brood War skill
  • Picking a full SKT team
This week was yet another hectic week for fantasy proleague with heavy swings in value for many players. Let's see our how teams did this week.

Round One's Bests

The second round was a king of the hill format, very different in terms of dynamics from a traditional Proleague round. As player costs are mostly assigned by round 2 results, we decided to build a token team based on the first round results to see if there would be a significant difference in terms of outcome. This team will be subject to trades both on the main and anti teams with the same limitations as a normal fantasy team.

Week 3 Recap

Team :
KT Rolster - (-5p)

Captain : (P)Rain - (9p)
Players :
  • (P)Carno(Stats) - (0p)
  • (Z)Soulkey - (6p)
  • (T)TY - (3p)
  • (T)BrAvO - (5p)
  • (P)JYP – (1p)

Anti - team :
  • (Z)Shine - (0p)
  • (P)Stork - (3p)
  • (T)Reality - (3p)

Last week, the players of this team had mixed results, losing to players they were favored against. This week's results were more expected however. KT's results have been abysmal and at this point it is hard to see the current trend being turned around with HotS waiting around the corner. The situation is similar for EG-TL and it is not surprising to see both JYP and Carno not bringing many points. Woongjin continues to dominate the Proleague and this round is no different. Soulkey and BrAvO only played once but they still consistently bring points. Standing in the middle of these two extreme examples, we have Team 8 whose ace player surprisingly lost against the newcomer Comet but beat BeSt.

Our anti-team is entirely composed of Samsung Khan players which should have been a glorious idea had Samsung not over-performed this round. Nonetheless, the relief for many FPL players came this week when they lost both of their matches. Reality and Stork won once but the worst had been avoided.

Week 4 Preview and Trades

(T)BrAvO for (T)Flash
(P)JYP for (Z)Crazy-Hydra
(P)Stork for (Z)hyvaa

The BrAvO to Flash trade is a golden opportunity. BrAvO isn't on the line-up this week while Flash get to play JYP's infamous vs T. Even though JYP is on a four-game win winning streak versus Terran and Flash is on a three-game losing streak against Protoss, the odds still favor the KT Terran. In the same token, we are forced to trade JYP. This trade isn't ideal, but trading him for Crazy who scored a decent 3-1 during the first round, won't be too bad.

Rain will most likely win without sweating too much. Soulkey, Stats and TY might have more work on their hand as they face inconsistent but talented players. We have also traded Stork for hyvaa following our team spirit.

Betting on Lineups

Each week, there are some match-ups that we believe are hugely in favor of one of either team or players. This « per week » team will be drafted on week one and we will try to find the best trades each week with no consideration as to how the players can do in the future.

Week 3 Recap

Team : [image loading] STX SouL - (6p)

Captain : (Z)EffOrt - (5p)

Players :
  • (T)Innovation(Bogus) - (9p)
  • (P)Zest(P7GAB,Wooki) - (4p)
  • (P)Bong - (8p)
  • (Z)Revival - (0p)
  • (P)JYP - (1p)

Anti - team :
  • (T)Classic - (2p)
  • (P)Stork - (3p)
  • (Z)hyvaa - (2p)

STX SouL continues to perform well this week with two wins against Team 8 and Samsung Khan, their direct opponents. Their star player, Innovation, is bringing home points as well. Bong, the up-and-coming CJ Entus player, finally lived up to the hype and defeated strong opponents, even Flash himself. Zest had a decent week but couldn't prevent KT from losing. As for JYP and Revival, they can't do anything to help the downfall of EG-TL.

We choose to trade Savage for hyvaa last week and it proved to be a bad choice as STX won twice while Team 8 didn't. As such, the anti-team brings points despite hyvaa and Classic not playing at all and Stork only winning once.

Week 4 Preview and Trades

(P)Stork for (T)BrAvO

This week is a true conundrum for this team. Zest, JYP and Revival are placed in unfavorable match-ups and the number of decent trades available is more or less null. For sure, we could trade one of them for someone like SonGDuRi or Crazy, but it either forces our main team to play each other, or it wouldn't follow the spirit of the team. We don't expect a lot from these four players and the results should be quite grim. On the flip side though, Innovation plays a newcomer and should uphold his Code S status easily. The last 2 main team players, Bong and EffOrt, are unfortunately playing against deadly WJS players. On the anti-team, we traded Stork for BrAvO who doesn't play this week, as with Classic. Unfortunately, hyvaa does play this week but his result are too hard to predict..

All-in on SKT T1

We all saw that an all KT Rolster team could win a round during round 1. This round, it's impossible to take all of KT's best with 30 points but it's possible to do so with their arch-rivals SKT T1. With only 28 points in total and no anti-team, let's see what they can do. Trading will be employed if needed.

Week 3 Recap

Team :
SKT T1 (9p)

Captain : (P)Rain - (9p)
Players :
  • (T)Fantasy - (3p)
  • (Z)soO - (9p)
  • (Z)s2 - (8p)
  • (P)BeSt - (6p)
  • (Z)Sacsri - (6p)

The wind is finally blowing in the right direction for SKT: With Rain spearheading the charge, they won both matches this week. soO also brought home 9 points, just like Rain and the rest of the supporting cast got at least 6 points each. Unfortunately, FanTaSy still isn't in top shape losing yet another game to put him on a 5 loss streak. Tough times.

Week 4 Preview and Trades

(T)FanTaSy for (P)ParalyzE

SKT T1 only plays STX SouL this week and they didn't field neither FanTaSy nor BeSt. While we can easily grasp why FanTaSy isn't given yet another chance, BeSt has been performing OK this round with a 2-2 record. We couldn't trade for hudadak(Sorry) due to software limitations, but we could for ParalyzE. Let's be honest here; this is a very costly trade but at this point, the star terran of the last days of BroodWar is just playing terribly. Furthermore, Mini is a terrible PvP player, the SKT Protoss isn't any better on the record but at least he gets to play.

[spoiler=BW Elephants]

Betting on BW Skill

Proleague was, for more than a decade, the main event in Korean Brood War. Salaries were negotiated based on Proleague results and many known players made themselves a name before moving on to win Starleagues. The paradigm of this team is simple: we pick the big BW names and reminisce.

Week 3 Recap

Team :
SKT T1 - (9p)

Captain : (Z)Jaedong - (0p)
Players :
  • (Z)EffOrt - (5p)
  • (P)Carno(Stats) - (0p)
  • (T)Light - (3p)
  • (Z)SoulKey - (6p)
  • (P)BeSt - (6p)

Anti - team :
  • (P)Argo(Jaehoon) - (3p)
  • (P)Terminator - (6p)
  • Hyuk - (2p)

As we saw in the previous team, SKT has got their mojo back and they are the highlight of this week for this team. Soulkey, BeSt and EffOrt each won once while Light was side-lined due to his team being too dominant. That's a shame.

And speaking of shame, Stats has changed his name in Carno. Considering he lost yet again this week, this might not have been such a good idea. As for Jaedong, his weakness in ZvP is crippling him so badly, it makes all of his fans blame the coaches for EG-TL's poor performances. Just like last week, this anti-team is losing us a lot of points, a testimony of the new wind that blows for previously poor players. Hyuk still doesn't play, but Argo and Terminator are winning some games after all.

Week 4 Preview and Trades

It's quite hard for us to have any trading room with the current restrictions. Fantasy would be an obvious choice for Stats, but he doesn't play. Best isn't playing too but neither Classic, nor Bong or Zest were good enough in Brood War to warrant a trade. Jaedong is expected to lose yet again in a PvZ while the CJ is facing WJS in a hard to predict match-up. As for the anti-team it wouldn't be too surprising to see Terminator and Argo winning yet again.

Right there with you buddy, right there with you. I'm surprised I actually have 5 points. I guess my one non-KTEG pick will carry me (soulkey).

Well PL is always full of surprises but this week we can be certain of at least one thing: one of EGTL or KT are going to end their losing ways, if at least temporarily. I can't imagine why Taeja has been left out of the lineup: even a zero-preparation, injured Taeja in recent PL poor form is STILL a better choice than Puma. Taeja eats zergs for lunch, that's just what he does; Puma is lunch.

Taeja has GSL I know but it would really be worth it if even they just had taxi'd Taeja in for his one match in b/w practice sessions. He's going to practice anyway, it might as well be for a Proleague point that EGTL desperately desperately need right now.

Oh my goodness, so THAT was what was missing in this week's line-up. I had just ASSUMED that @EGtrotRC was playing Taeja this week, since he's been doing that in recent matches. I disagreed with @EGtrotRC not playing Taeja for like a month. When Taeja showed up for Code S, his wrists seemed fine and his play was good. A non-practiced Taeja is heads and shoulders above 80% of the PL active players. He just needs to play the map maybe once or thrice, and that's good enough practice for him, I think.

But this week is the kicker. Worst player in Proleague (if you don't count ppl who've played fewer than 4 matches) takes the Terran spot over Liquid`Taeja.

The match is on February 25th. On Neo Planet S (which is part of the Code S rotation, now). Updated/Fixed: Taeja is scheduled to play GSL Code S RO4 on March 1st, which is 4 days later. I don't see any schedule conflict, there. It's just 1 map (or 2, if he's the ace). Why NOT play Taeja?

I don't want to be "that guy", but please direct all feedback to the EG-TL coach @EGtrotRC (and maybe urge @LiquidNazgul to consider changing their direction, perhaps?)

Taeja plays his GSL semi Mar 1st according to Liquipedia, but either way, exactly, there seems to be no reason not to have him there.

"But the two-time OSL runner-up's fall does not seem overly concerning for SKT"

Fantasy has 4 OSL silvers.

GG

damn.

Good job to woongjin , they are solid, but who knows how strong they will be in playoffs.

This kinda turned out almost exactly obviously, except with woongjin > cj. cj skt and Kt have basically always been the best 3 proleague teams.

I feel so bad for team 8 though!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they were so close to getting that ace match!!! team 8 u can still do this!! glglglgl

I think something could still happen for EG_TL , they just need to practice more cheese and refine their builds... they could still beat woongjin etc and i think that would be great experience for them. also play idra plz?? hahah

in fact: EG_TL is a mear 3 games from 2nd place. they simply need to show medium results in r4 and GOOD results in r5

Jaedong will win this time, even though it is a ZvP. His opponent after all is MyungSik.
