Hello fellow TL's and mapmakers!
I was about to start a new project when it hit me, what exactly is the best eyecandy to look at in terms of tileset? The colors shouldn't distract from the action (when spectating, or playing) but they need to add something to the game that makes the alien (or urban?) world feel real. The strategic aspect is of no importance here, since each tileset offers (mostly) the same oppertunities.
So, what tileset would you like to see the most for the upcoming ladder maps (both 1v1 and 2v2)?
Poll: What tileset do you like most as a tournament spectator?Jungle (Agria / Haven / Bel'Shir / Zhakul'Das (23) 29% Urban (Korhal / Tyrador / Aiur / Tarsonis) (14) 18% Xil / Mar Sara / Port Zion / Shakuras / Typhon (Wasteland) (14) 18% Ulaan (Underground Cave) (7) 9% Ulnar (Worldship) (5) 6% Char / New Folsom / Redstone (Volcanic) (4) 5% Meinhoff/ Monlyth/ Valhalla (Lunar) (4) 5% A combination of the above ... (post tileset) (4) 5% Avernus / Braxis Alpha / Castanar (Space Platform) (3) 4% 78 total votes Your vote: What tileset do you like most as a tournament spectator? By far Mar Sara and Xil. These two tilesets are just so awesome!
|
Wasteland was called 'dull' by one of my testers on 'Black Canals' So I decided to start this poll on getting a different, possibly more popular tileset .
|
i thoroughly enjoy working with ulaan and mar sara
|
i would say every bright tileset with good and clear lighting, mar sara, bel'shir and tarsonis. And mar sara is the best overall.
|
Ye, proper lighting seems to be a very important aspect of tournament matches. Though some player colors (like dark brown and purple) can mess with some, shakuras and ulaan seem still fine although considered 'dark'.
|
I like the lighting on space platforms quite a bit. Not really biased with the tilesets overall, I think any of them can be used well and seems good in that case. I probably like Mar Sara the best, though.

I appreciate desert and greenery.

Any title set. It all depends on how they are used.

jungle and wasteland are my fav but i dont really care about the rest
|
I think a lot of results may be skewed, because right now Bel'Shir is the easiest to make look good. However, I feel like all of the tilesets can be equally amazing if they are lush with doodads and have precise texturing.
That being said, right now I think I enjoy Jungle maps because of the trees.
|
Jungle seems to be winning, I'm not really surprised to be honest. The amount of things that can be done to modify a jungle are much more numerous than the wasteland variables. There are only so many interesting wasteland doodadds while it rains tons of doodadds in jungle terrain.
For clarity of battles I do feel that Shakuras and Zhakul'Das are a bit too dark (purple zerg can be hard to spot, since I am colorblind).
Keep the votes coming, I will start a new map soon.

Zhakul'Das and Ulaan are my favourites by a country mile. Espcialy Zhakul'das. It's a versatile set.
|
It's really hard to decide, but why do so many vote on jungle? I can't see that anymore... aside from the glorious Bel'Shir Beach of course. :3 No more Ulaan as well plz. We need a new desert map. A lava-only map would be nice too. Then a second urban, metal needs a little sister. =) And then with HotS there will be nothing but ice-maps for a while.^^

You don't see it often though, as it is quite a dark environment.
What really surprises me is that there is only one Xel'Naga Worldship map and it's not ever competitively played. It's quite pretty and has a lot of alien technology 'things' in it's accompanied doodadd set.

As for the dark environment problem, there's plenty of ways around it. Using other sets' lighting, for example.
