Samsung KHAN's

These two players happen to share a distinctive trait in a certain match-up that makes fans remember their names even during the worst of their inconsistencies and slumps: their unique ability to twist and decide the usually explosive and short zerg versus zerg games with the use of hive tech.
Getting to hive is a rare sight in ZvZ, and as such, it's considered to be one of the most precious treats of pro games, even amongst those who generally dislike this overly precise and volatile matchup.
People often argue that this very "dancing on the razor's edge" aspect of the match-up makes it improbable to enter the highest tiers of tech, because the games are often decided earlier by the slightest mismicros and build order advantages, and rarely stay balanced long enough for such progression. Still, the fact that zero and great are featured in an unlikely percentage of all such televised games ever played shows that maybe it's all more a question of willingness to go hive than being well-matched with your opponent - and as such, these players deserve praise from all fans of BW for daring to steer from the boring norms.
When we say that these players have played 5-6 televised ZvZ games with hives making an appearance, those numbers almost seem laughable, but once again we have to consider what overwhelming number of progamers spend their entire career without giving the audiences even a single such game.
Not to spend time on the characteristics of a hive-tech zvz in this issue, here are two insightful posts about them from these forums - which were mostly inspired by these two players in our spotlight today.

Even those "few" 5-6 games evenly spread out throughout their career made for one of the most exciting ZvZ rivalries of our time. When Zero and great play games, people immediately get excited at the possibility of an epic and unusual game of Starcraft. To get ourselves a little more familiar with how this atmosphere came to be, prplhz will now tell us about two spectacular games that Zero and great have played against other zerg players:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/1ojqN.jpg)
November 10th 2010, Shinhan Bank Proleague Woongjin Stars against KT Rolster. Woongjin Stars came into this proleague season reformed as a much leaner and intimidating team, clearly capable of contending with anybody while KT Rolster was defending their proleague title from last season.
First match was on Empire of the Sun with Stars sending out ZerO and KT playing HoeJJa. The red ZerO spawns bottom right and opens with a 12hatch while HoeJJa spawns top right doing 12pool gas and puts down a hatch at his natural.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/icMyw.png)
ZerO easily deflects the obilgatory ling pressure from HoeJJa using his hatch to negate HoeJJa's speed.
ZerO delayed speed for fast lair/spire so after deflecting the ling pressure he was looking really good, being ahead in econ/army/tech. With all these lings ZerO decide to go on the offensive.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/992tW.png)
But HoeJJa deflects it twice ..
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/SWOyh.jpg)
+ Show Spoiler +
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/l97QW.png)
.. and just before third assault HoeJJa goes on the offensive.
Instead of going home to protect against the ling runby ZerO goes on the offensive again, but with no ling reinforcements this fails miserably and he is forced to turn around but too late.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/hJ9Ba.png)
This is bad for ZerO.
Before ZerO can get home his spire is down after only 4 mutas have spawned. ZerO has no choice but to throw down an evo chamber to protect against the mutas ZerO knows are coming. With spores in place the game goes into a stalemate where both players mass an air force, but ZerO will never catch up with HoeJJa in muta/scourge.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/xwHkM.png)
And then ... Queen's Nest
This caught everybody by surprise, especially HoeJJa who has decided not to scout ZerO and has no idea what is happening until the greater spire is half way done. In response to this HoeJJa cancels his third at 3 o'clock and puts down an evo chamber and spores up. Yea, I know, but that's what he did!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/JOtc3.png)
I never really understood how these cocoons can float in the air.
HoeJJa is now suddenly behind in tech army and econ. The only thing he has going for him is the mobility of his army, his muta/scourge being faster than ZerO's muta/scourge/devourer. ZerO decides to blindly push towards HoeJJa's base. Somehow he manages to dodge ZerO's scout lings but then ...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/HUkvb.png)
Can't let this ling live! ZerO decides to use his impressive air force to kill this ling and then to fly a bit around and kill an oovie instead of going for HoeJJa's base.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/FAYyC.png)
HoeJJa uses this time to move his army across the map and launch a counter attack before ZerO reaches his base.
For the second time in this game ZerO rushes his army back to prevent critical damage but HoeJJa's scourges delay him and for the second time he is too late, when he arrives HoeJJa has already retired leaving ZerO's natural in ruins.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/4h3GV.png)
This is bad for ZerO.
ZerO is now on one base against HoeJJa's two bases, he has to put on pressure on and he decides to go for HoeJJa's main again. HoeJJa counter attack again and for the third time in this game ZerO rushes back to defend but third time's a charm. HoeJJa has significantly less scourges and cannot delay ZerO as much and ZerO catches HoeJJa's air force before he can destroy anything but spore colonies.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/krLek.png)
An epic battle of devourers, mutas and scourges ensues.
Acid spores starts stacking on HoeJJa's mutas and he is forced to retire towards his spored up base with ZerO in hot pursuit.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/o7E7A.png)
In HoeJJa's main ZerO destroys HoeJJa's economy and his army in a very nice micro battle.
During this battle ZerO also rebuilds his natural hatch and gets his economy going again. After killing almost all of HoeJJa's drones he retreats, being in a position of superior army, econ and tech.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/3afTI.png)
After a failed last ditch attack HoeJJa is forced to gg.
In this game the hive tech came as a surprise, not just to the audience and commentators but to the opponent who did not expect it. In fact, HoeJJa didn't even scout for it. After making a big mistake in the beginning ZerO throws away his BO advantage when he loses his spire to a ling runby. This forces him into an unwinnable position in standard ZvZ but ZerO does not play standard. Even though HoeJJa allows ZerO to get to hive undisturbed he has not won the game yet, his stronger army has to catch HoeJJa's army but when this happens the game is essentially over.

Christmas day 2010. PDPop MSL ro32

great spawns top right as red and opens 9pool lair while Soulkey spawns top left as orange and opens 12poolgas and puts down a hatch in his natural. great tries to put on some ling pressure but Soulkey has his own lings up in time to defend.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/liA3N.png)
great hides some lings and puts down a sunken in his main. It's a trap!
Soulkey doesn't bite though and stays put with his lings. great gets his spire up and pumps some mutas out while Soulkey puts down an evo chamber before spire and builds two spores in natural and main.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ms3gG.png)
great attacks with mass lings while his mutas wait for the outcome. Soulkey defends with less lings losing around 4 drones.
During the attack great got a hatch up in his natural. Soulkey, being behind in mutas but ahead in static defenses, decides to turtle and during the next couple of minutes there's not much action. great pokes around with mutas and Soulkey scouts with scourge.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/KvuMe.png)
And then ... Hive. This is the first shot of it around a minute after the queen's nest started.
great already has a third hatch in his natural and he uses using his superior muta count to put up a hatch at 3 o'clock without getting disturbed. great also relentlessly scouts and sees the hive seconds after it starts morphing.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/v0jLb.png)
great decides to go hive on 3 base ...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/SWOyh.jpg)
+ Show Spoiler +
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/z9iyr.png)
... while Soulkey uses his hive to get this fance spire.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/5O92d.png)
great follows up with a hydralisk den.
great spores up in preparation for his impending loss of air control, putting 3 spores in each of his bases.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/EICmC.png)
Soulkey moves out with muta/devourer/ling
Soulkey decides to go for great's 3 o'clock with his lings and use his muta/devourer to prevent any reinforcements ...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/lfCPx.png)
... but great barely manages to move his mutas to save the 3 o'clock before getting blocked.
great launches a ling counter that forces Soulkey to retreat with his muta/devourer air force. This gives breathing room to finish two defiler mounds for fast plague, something which will be very dangerous to Soulkey's muta/devourer. But before defilers pop ...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/q5JOC.png)
... great decides to throw away a ton of his mutas against the Soulkey's muta/devourer. I don't know if that was a serious case of miscontrol but it was pretty bad.
But Soulkey has a pretty hard time taking advantage of his stronger army. All of great's bases are spored and sunken'd up and Soulkey is still only on 2 hatches to great's 4. Soulkey realizes this and puts up another hatch in the 12 o'clock.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/FLFsq.png)
Smart move as this allows Soulkey to be in his base with his slow muta/devourer force while still being close enough to great's bases to pose a threat.
great will have none of that third though and pushes it heavily with his 4 hatches. Soulkey tries to hold it off with his own ling/muta/devourer ...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/RyRtx.png)
... and great again shows how much he cares about his own mutas, this time by plagueing them. The korean commentators finds this amusing but the mutas don't. Because every single one of them dies.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Uvjfr.png)
With his third safe for the time and complete air control, Soulkey morphs some guardians and starts to harass great's mineral lines.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/CGYBB.png)
great who's given up on mutas for now and gone for a ling/hydra/lurker/defiler composition does the only sensible thing and goes on the offensive destroying the 12 o'clock hatch ...
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/oT2fv.png)
... and moving on to Soulkey's natural. Soulkey only manages to stop the onslaught with 5 guardians.
Meanwhile great, after a long time, manages to kill the 5 guardians that were harassing his natural and 3 o'clock. great tries to set up a contain near Soulkey's natural but decides it's too dangerous near the cliffs with Soulkey's guardian/devourer/lurker, especially when he doesn't have any oovies around, and consequently retreats. He puts up his 4th base at 1 o'clock and keeps going for ling/hydra/lurker/defiler until he feels save to advance again.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/BcyDA.png)
great repeatedly denies Soulkey's third.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ixpVo.png)
During the entire game Soulkey almost continously does ling runbys, sniping drones and defilers and scouting while also keeping great on his toes.
At this point in the game Soulkey is almost mined out and desperately needs a new base while great sits comfortably on 4 bases. Soulkey has a very strong but also immobile composition of ling/lurker/devourer/guardian with a couple of defilers mixed in. great uses his opponent's immobility to take a new base at bottom right main uncontested.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/qKFmx.png)
Soulkey also finally manages to get a third up at 9 o'clock. Four lurkers under a swarm guarding a ramp is allegedly something you don't just break with anything in ZvZ.
With a nydus up from his natural to his 9 o'clock, Soulkey is in a pretty unbreakable defensive position but at this point he has no map control at all. The game goes pretty stale and even the ever enthusiastic korean commentators have a hard time getting excited as evident by this, which mostly sounds like a plea for something to happen.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/bzbyO.png)
Even great knows that the game needs some more action and tries to please his fans with this funny little gimmick, which sadly enough ultimately fails without doing any damage.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/jYvhC.png)
great then gives people something to get excited about for real. Ultras in ZvZ, great you crowd-pleaser!
At this point the game is essentially over though, great has full map control and better economy. He gradually takes new bases all over the map while Soulkey cannot get out of his measly 3 bases.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ek3rw.png)
In the end great decides to a-move and roll over Soulkey. GG.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/uCK0F.png)
He went hive against the wrong man and he knows it.
The game shows great reacting perfectly to a timely scouted hive tech by Soulkey. He gets a superior economy going while calmly teching to defilers that makes any large scale aggression Soulkey could have wanted to do with devourer/muta virtually impossible. The game would have been over much sooner if great had not been so careless with his mutas and defended against harassment better. Soulkey relentlessly did ling runbys throughout the entire game which helped him keep some map control but in the end it just delayed the inevitable. great's unit composition was just a lot better and with his superior economy he just rolled over Soulkey in the end.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/E8SFP.jpg)
Zero and great both have been progamers for years before they first met in an official game in the summer of 2009. Their game on Heartbreak Ridge was the opening to the Samsung vs Woongjin match in the Proleague, and great defeated Zero in an unspectacular fashion, paving the way for Samsung's eventual 3-1 victory.
There were no other games between the two for an other year, but then over the span of a year they have played 8 more times. As part of the top 32 players, they have met in the group stages of the Bigfile MSL, and after two quick defeats to Sea and Stats they have found themselves facing off in the losers' game with high stakes: the loser was to be eliminated immediately from the starleague. That game turned out to be something quite special.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/GUBhT.jpg)
Let's make this clear: this game is one of the most unique ZvZs ever in Brood War's history, you do not want to miss out on watching the VOD:
If you already did, here's a battle report to remind you of the details:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/vp2gP.jpg)
Zero spawns as yellow at 4 o'clock
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/5oN3y.jpg)
great in red at 12
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Wj7Zc.jpg)
they both scout in the right direction
Great opens 12pool 11gas while zero takes the front expo with a 12 hatch, not opting for the protected back expo to keep distance from great. Happy with his position, great calmly takes the protected expansion behind the lurker eggs. Since they have both scouted each other right off the bat, great doesn't produce any lings until Zero's pool is done, but starts hive earlier, and as such
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/6zUbo.jpg)
he puts down a faster spire
Zero manages to sneak his first 2 lings up great's ramp, even though he has 4 lings defending
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/YXKYf.jpg)
they damage a drone
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/DYxkb.jpg)
and the last ling turns back to kill it with its dying breath
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/SWOyh.jpg)
+ Show Spoiler +
great was already morphing a sunken, and zero puts one down too, preparing for the vengeance for the drone
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/2i7eG.jpg)
which finishes just in time
Afraid of great's earlier mutas, zero decides to sacrifice some of his economic advantage, and morph an evo chamber, and then a spore colony at each of his bases.
Great's first wave is composed of scourge, and he
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/WqMxB.jpg)
tries to attack just as the colony starts morphing,
but only kills a drone. Zero, expecting the scourge, makes scourge of his own at first, and by the time his first mutas pop
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ERPNa.jpg)
they are well defended by the spore
With the mutas Zero fights off a new wave of lings. Both players show perfect micro to kill some scourge, and spend some time just macro up, then finally:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/zpRCi.jpg)
Zero puts down a queens nest
and starts the hive subsequently
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/6YatN.jpg)
while great expand to the front, towards the Woongjin player
To the big satisfaction of the crowd and the casters,
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Ofxae.jpg)
Zero morphs two queens!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/nIpCC.jpg)
and great sacrifices a scourge to scout the hive!
Now both players appear to be scared - zero moves out to ride his momentum of surprise, and great wants to engage before zero can make queens - not knowing he already did.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/EQxmc.jpg)
great catches a small clump of mutas
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/kGhrN.jpg)
the scourge clash
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/AYjKL.jpg)
and zero lands an ensnare, so great has to commit
but great has vastly superior muta numbers, and even after two landed ensnares he still wins, taking out zero's mutas, spore colony, and
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/U8cKv.jpg)
even some drones at the natural
observer shows its due to the level 2 carapace upgrade - great is using his spire timing advantage well
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/NAEc6.jpg)
he puts down a hatch and a hydra den
Zero has a single carapace upgrade, and he isnt close to catching up either
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/U60NK.jpg)
because he was busy evolving his spire!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/mi9oN.jpg)
to capitalize on this, immediately coccoons appear
great is confident in his economic lead, so he puts down an evo chamber as well, with a few spores to defend his three bases. In fact, after scouting zero's air fleet of mutalisks, queens and devourers, he ups the number of them at every base.
Zero continues to threaten the borderlines of the Khan zerg's territory, and starts a third hatch, still not taking the expo towards the opponent. Great sends out a few scourge to try to snipe either queens or devourers
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/yCcAK.jpg)
but he cannot pick them out of the clump
zero snipes a drone trying to sneak an expo on the left
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/JpgIS.jpg)
and a few more scourge almost manage to kill a queen
the damaged queen becomes frenzied, darting alone towards great's base, almost falling to a spore colony, but not finding great's army anywhere
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/FXYA4.jpg)
it parasites the first of great's hydralisks
great's army returns home, but they get ensnared fast, and when zero starts picking off drones, great cannot risk losing his mutas
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ZlnuI.jpg)
so he tries defending desperately with hydras.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/4krrN.jpg)
Zero used the time to drone up and put down a 4th hatch
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/8eVAN.jpg)
and a defiler's mound with a hydra den
which great scouts immediately with an other clutch scourge-scout
great tries to double-expand, and while one of them gets scouted,
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Th1I9.jpg)
the other one starts a hidden hatchery on the left
the game just keeps steering further from the zvz norm, a group of hydras tries to repel zero's advance
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/EgeX8.jpg)
but they get ensnared
So far Zero has been staying true to his fame, using his queens perfectly - his two original ones still alive -, and he's landing ensnares left and right
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/J3OXa.jpg)
but he cannot break great's hydra-spore-muta defense
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/MTzxR.jpg)
and he loses both devourers to hydras
great's army is whittled down down though, and he is forced to withdraw behind his spores.
rushing for defiler tech
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ROAqV.jpg)
both players have double defiler mounds
At this point, both players catch a few seconds of rest, 18 minutes into this zvz, then Zero attacks the front with a small muta-ling army, seconds before consume finishes for great's defilers. Drawing defenses to the natural, the Woongjin zerg flies over the main to take out a defenseless defiler and to scout great's 6th hatchery - which he thinks to be his fifth.
Zero uses this time to double-expand,
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/qIbCd.jpg)
and great prepares defenses at his separated expo on the left.
Just in time before it's scouted. Both players set up defenses with lurkers and Nydus canals.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/tNWuU.jpg)
quite a sight to behold.
Zero launches a small assault on the left with lings
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/lsUYf.jpg)
spawning broodlings on the defiler
...and landing his own swarms on the front.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/wNCYY.jpg)
It's a matter of principle.
The Samsung player is slowly starting to re-establish his map presence with defiler-lead lurker/hydra armies, and starts to break up the lurker eggs leading to Zero's fourth.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/tL7iT.jpg)
even plaguing all of his mutalisks
Zero is visibly upset about the news. He masses lings on both sides of the egg wall, to try to get rid of the threat. Great uses this time to attack the hatchery in the middle with a control group of lings
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/AQkun.jpg)
almost taking it out.
Both players are massing units and macroing, and great takes his 6th base.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/eKXi8.jpg)
Most of the map is already taken
and the game is far from over!
At this point there are no major engagements, but the action is all over the place. Every defiler has a high bounty on their heads, they are plagued, broodlinged, and to the commentators' amusement:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/yQc9F.jpg)
Zero seems to have loaded up a drop?!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/VH45H.jpg)
clearly.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/rcEpr.jpg)
great launches a counter-attack
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Y2EZm.jpg)
but loses his attacked base.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/xa5Wq.jpg)
but so does Zero.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/yJV1o.jpg)
who also happens to have a mutalisk with 10 kills over his empty third...
Zero tries a zergling counterattack, but lurkers dispose of it with relative ease. Zero clears up the mutas, and tries to rebuild his lost hatch, but great is already moving down there again with a huge lurker-hydra force.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/a3PDk.jpg)
the returning mutas get plagued.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/5L91F.jpg)
and so do the queens.
But they still manage to snipe all of the defilers. The obersver spots Zero's Ultralisk Cavern,
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/97bHM.jpg)
and the hatch goes down once again
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/VUT2g.jpg)
and four lurkers own zero's army.
After trying to flank each other relentlessly
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/sP32c.jpg)
zero finally manages to corner great's hydras
And then the inevitable:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/YsUT8.jpg)
great presents the first ultra..
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/BiUpO.jpg)
and Zero presents 6.
Zero loads up for an other drop as an assault on the left
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/mWCzM.jpg)
great seems to be prepared better this time.
Zero tries to reinforce the drop, but scourge intercept him
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/GxXRr.jpg)
and he loses an overlord with 2 ultralisks in it.
so he gives up on the drop and decides to defend instead
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/0BJyw.jpg)
ultra on ultra
Zero wins the battle after losing the hatchery, and immediately goes on a counterattack, but great's new ultras,
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/4ybFt.jpg)
and a clutch plague repel him.
After some back and forth ultra-ling engagements in the middle, zero is always forced to flee from great's territory
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/yscuy.jpg)
there.
and the Samsung zerg is 2 bases ahead of him now. After getting his final group of ultralisks get plagued, Zero taps out.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ysYkj.jpg)
GG..
Zero was playing well, as long as the regular ZvZ skills are considered, but great just showed huge confidence and experience in his lategame management. Even though Zero was winning several engagements, after great's third hatch was placed, his map control (or the calculated surrendering of it), defense timings, larvae usage and other decisions were all steadily putting him ahead in macro - even though he made some smaller mistakes along the way. Still, we also have to applaud the Woongjin zerg's endurance and creativity, because it was due to them we were able to witness this gem of a battle, an incredible ZvZ where almost all zerg units were used: truly a game to remember in BW history.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/E8SFP.jpg)
Then soon the two have been paired up in the all-zerg Ro4 of the PdPop MSL. Having a reputation for playing macro-based ZvZ games which not once end up in hive tech, their series was probably the most anticipated zerg versus zerg battle of the season. Especially so after their famous Bigfile MSL game (see above), which showed they were not afraid to get hive against each other either, not to mention that the very same map, Triathlon was to make a return in the lineup of this best-of-5!
The community response was clear, the people were hungry for hive-tech games.
