Always out of focus, or in the background. Entering the stage in an air of disinterest in front of fans who did not come to see them perform. A very special handshake, the tenth, fifteenth, twentieth time these very people are picked to play opponents, but it goes unnoticed.

A lot of progamers spend all their careers as such. The Brood War scene has always been defined by games between those at the very top. Everyone remembers the rivalries of Flash and JD, Boxer and Yellow, July and oov or Nal_Ra and Savior, while many of the 1v1 battles and struggles of "only A" or even B-class players go unnoticed, even though they also provided countless amazing games throughout the years.
In a scene dominated by the same handful of players for the past few years, there are a lot of rivalries that are not getting the attention they would deserve - based on the quality and entertainment value of their games -, just because they are played in the second lines.

I imagined an article series concentrating on these unsung rivalries, and a few weeks ago I started reaching out to some better and lesser-known members of the community to make this project a reality, and now we're here to present you the first piece.

The articles are written by a team of volunteering fans, ranging from forum superstars through accomplished veterans to newer posters. We hope to remind you of some current rivalries - or if you're newer to the scene, introduce you to them -, because we believe they are all worth following, and learning some about their history will also provide context that could further increase the entertainment value of them in the future.

To start us off, there's one particular pairing which was almost too prominent to be featured here, two progamers who are known to constantly produce some of the most entertaining games, but who could never enjoy being the bests (or just fan-favourites) of their respective races, and often found their very teammates stealing their thunder. They have both earned the highest awards for their performance, but their inconsistency denied them the spotlight they were aspiring for, and this is especially sad seeing the more than 20 televised games they played between each other. They are, of course, Fantasy and Calm. I pass the torch to moktira, whose brief history writeups will serve as a frame for the other writers' pieces.

We hope you enjoy reading it.

Remember remember, the 25th of November, t'was the night of the (Z)'Clam' plot,
I know of no reason, why ever that mispelling, should ever be forgot

It was during (T)Fantasy and (Z)Calm's second game that the name (Z)Clam appeared, a simple typo on OGN's part gave explantion to Kim Yoon Hwan's split personality; somedays he was (Z)Calm, others he was (Z)Clam. And on this particular day, the 25th of November 2009, it was certainly (Z)Clam that appeared.
+ Show Spoiler [Clam] +
[image loading]

In the past two years (T)Fantasy and (Z)Calm have met a total of 21 times, with (T)Fantasy currently holding a 13-8 lead. (T)Fantasy has said in an interview that when he was a rookie the older players used tell him
"as long as you play an opponent early on, you'll keep playing him a lot."

Of these 21 games, two thirds of them have been in StarLeagues. The first of these being in the above mentioned EVER OSL 2009. Just three days after this they met in the fourth set of the Proleague on Tornado, but on this day (Z)Calm showed up rather than (Z)Clam, and he took his revenge for the OSL. However mere moments after this victory the two stepped up again for the Ace match on Match Point.
538 will tell you about this game in detail below:

Fantasy in white gets the bottom spawn on Match Point, Calm gets the top in yellow, and the game starts off in a very standard manner: the zerg fast expanding, and the terran going CC first in response to scouting this. Right as the pool finishes, Calm starts morphing a Lair right in front of the scouting SCV.

in your face

It's somewhat obvious that a 2 hatch muta build is coming

especially as the first lings fail to get rid of the SCV.

Fantasy puts down a second barracks with a late gas, preparing a marine-turret defense.

the turrets start at the same time as the mutas

but a few lings still surprise him.

Fantasy quickly stabilizes, and Calm cannot find any more openings. He just circles Fantasy's bases with his increasing muta numbers while taking a third, a fourth, and starting the hydra den.
Fantasy moves out with a small group of M&M, and Calm is bleeding mutas at every engagement, only sniping a few medics. Calm still insists on mutas, and slowly starts chewing up the infantry:

until there's finally no more.

                                                            + Show Spoiler +

Calm macros up a little, and we catch his FP-view of morphing the first 8 lurkers.

There.

As the lurkers hatch, he immediately moves in front of Fantasy's natural, separating the main terran army from reinforcements.

setting up for quite a contain

but the first vessel arrives almost immediately:

and the lurkers are cleaned up.

Now Calm, instead of macroing up, spends most of his larvae producing a sizable lurker-ling army, and prepares for a huge pincer attack on Fantasy's army while it's trying to secure territory for the terran third - and the zerg also starts his hive to catch up in tech.

the attack from the top arrives a few seconds too early

and the second line can only set up a half-hearted contain

The terran entrance is still intact, and the first sieging tanks clean up the zerg forces. Calm now takes the 6 o'clock base, and is transferring slow overlords there - maybe preparing a slow-drop?
Fantasy now has 5 barracks and a factory constantly blinking, with two starports pumping vessels. He decides to use his temporary army advantage to push out as the defiler mound starts morphing. Calm tries to delay frantically

both by throwing lurker-ling at him

and by faking a 4-overlord drop on the terran main.

They are both cleaned up easily, the terran army decides to go for the new base at 6, and a dropship ferries a strike team to the undefended bottom right.

4 marines, two firebats and a medic unloading

Calm finally sandwiches the terran army threatening his new base

but he's just a few seconds late to save his 4th.

The first defiler is on his way towards the terran natural, but it is irradiated, and a tank snipes it just as it is about to cast the first swarm.

and the attack is cruelly repelled

At this point, Fantasy is clearly winning most of the engagements, but he is still on only two bases versus Calm's 4, even after taking out the hatchery in the bottom right - which is already rebuilding.
Fanta finally starts floating his third command center to its place, while an other terran army moves out to threaten the base at 6:

but the first landed swarm repels him

At the same time, a dropship sneaks its cargo into Match Point's huge main:

but its immediately cleaned up by lings

or is it?

Now the action is all over the map. Fantasy manages to push through to 6, a d-matrixed marine spearheads into the sunkens with no reinforcements or nyduses in sight for Calm. The zerg tries a counter-attack in the middle of the map, but it's disrupted by a smaller M&M force.

All while the surviving marines still deny mining at the main

Fantasy could be ahead now in economy, but he makes a huge mistake with his SCV-transfer to the landed third:

chilling

After spending some irradiates, Fantasy destroys the base at the bottom.

clear.

and has a sizable vessel cloud roaming the map

- which Calm tries to plague repeatedly without success. Without Fanta putting any pressure on Calm, he reacts lightning-fast to an other drop:

sniping it mid-air

and finally landing a plague on the cloud

Fantasy is comfortable sitting on three bases now, and pushes towards the rebuilt bottom left with a highly upgraded firebat-heavy force. In the end he doesnt even need the melee damage:

Calm seems to be without defilers.

And the reinforcements are denied in style:

camping the ramp with a double-eraser.

Now this is the point where you might want to stop reading this BR for 20 seconds, and watch the events in the VOD instead, this link will make it start at the right time (if not, you're looking for 32:30):

No, don't skip it, just watch. 20 seconds is all I'm asking for, which you won't regret.
The reason for that: Calm displays picture-perfect cloning, and the retreating vessel cloud disappears in red flames within 2 seconds to a control group of scourge.

8 vessels in 2 seconds, beautiful.

Sadly, this might still not be enough to get Calm back in this game. He is down to his three original bases - even though a hatchery is morphing at the top, the terran's map presence makes saturating it highly unlikely. At this point, Fanta slowly sets up for a 4th, but he is obviously preparing for the kill.

Massing firebats to fight under swarm.

Taking a minute to gather his thoughts and army, he sends a smaller M&M group to kill the new base at the top, while his main force moves through the middle, the firebat-heavy infantry just waltzing through Calm's desperate swarms.

About to lose two bases at the same time, Calm taps out.

GG. Despite a few minor mistakes, Fantasy played a very impressive game here. He decided to stay on a few bases in favor of a quicker tech progression and a temporarily bigger army - but he always did the damage he needed to do at the right times and places.

Calm played his 2-hatch opening improperly, falling behind due to mismicro, and Fantasy reacted very nicely to all the mindgames the brain zerg was trying to play on him. While the STX ace wasn't showing his "Clam" form, he was still thoroughly outplayed in this game. (And with it, SKT1 took the win against STX)

In an enthralling 25 minute game (T)Fantasy managed to take the edge pulling a victory home for SKT1.

The pair met once more a month later and not again until April, but then over the course of two weeks they faced off in the MSL and OSL both.
Grobyc will take over now with a writeup on this period:

April 2010 marks a special time for both fantasy and Calm, in the sense that this is the first season the players total more than one game against each other in their climb to claim an individual title. At this time, Calm and fantasy, along with their fan party, merely wish to take a game off the other in attempt to get their foot in the door that is the Korean Air OSL round of 8. Following the encounter at Great Barrier Reef, it is apparent there is more to this game than a showcase of skill.

Great barrier reef Batman!~

Calm spawns as the green Zerg at the 12 o' clock position, with fantasy spawning as the yellow Terran towards 8 o' clock.

To many people's surprise, this game does not begin in the fashion of a typical TvZ. Calm pools first, followed by a gas before taking his expansion. fantasy gases after his 8rax, clearly intending to follow up with a factory to scoot around with a vulture. It appears Calm is going for a fast 2 hatch muta build, quickly starting his lair with his initial gas income.

A single marine rallies to Calm's natural, despite seeing Calm's choice to open pool first. This marine, however, is not to accompany an SCV with a late bunker rush.

Yes, yes it is, and Calm is not exactly impressed:

Shortly after, fantasy's vulture arrives, but with no drones mining to kill at the natural, he tries to force his way up the ramp, held by zerglings, until Calm's sunken colony finishes morphing.

                                                            + Show Spoiler +

fantasy is only able to kill a pair of zerglings, before getting finished off by the sunken.

After a while, 6 mutalisks pop for Calm, which proceed to fantasy's base after killing the pesky marine. Frustrated, Calm is met by a valkyrie and a handful of turrets accompanying his low medic marine count.

Trying to pick away at anything, Calm succeeds in luring a valkyrie out far enough, where he is able to kill it off, coupled with a few marines here and there. Another 2-3 valkyries are in production for fantasy in the next couple minutes though.

Still on 2 base, with fantasy's second command center finished on his high ground, Calm begins lurker production in hope to break fantasy as he expands.

With no tank support, and a bunker started late, Calm looks to make his way in to fantasy's base, dealing heavy damage. 4-5 Lurkers are able to burrow in the middle of fantasy's base, and reinforcements are rallying constantly.

Calm: Not so cute now, are you?

ZerO is able to 3-0 the group, forcing a 3-way tiebreaker for fantasy, Calm, and Pure.

Later that night, both players prepare for their MSL match the following day. Calm practices his lurker use ZvT, and fantasy continues to learn how bio works. The next day, the sun rises, and the players are pitted up against each other in their MSL group as well.

It appears we've been matched up again...

What I quite enjoyed about Calm and fantasy's first game of their MSL match was that it was very straight forward and can easily be described with pictures. Actual battle reports will be written for game 3 of their MSL match and game 5 however!

+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
fantasy: You're going to fucking go either lurkers or mutalisks; you are Zerg... And I shall have none of it :<

Calm: It's 7.5 minutes in and I'm pretty sure all I've made so far is 6 zerglings to assist my 5 hatch economy and tech. Like a boss!

fantasy: What... ?

Well they worked last time...

And there's probably about another dozen ultras rampaging elsewhere too.

I've seen more Terran aggression in a D- TvZ. Kind of funny, but not the best TvZ around .

Beating fantasy on Match Point puts Calm ahead 2-0 this season, up a game in both their OSL and MSL group on him.

At this point, fantasy has 3 days to get his shit together in time to make his way out of the 3-way tiebreaker between him, Pure, and Calm, who he will face yet again.

Calm proceeds to beat Pure, although fantasy gets stomped by Park Sae Jung. This leaves a potential draw (I.E. another 3-way tie breaker) for the group if fantasy can overcome Calm.

The calm before the storm

fantasy spawns as the blue Terran at the 11 o' clock position, opting for a wall-off at his natural choke. Calm, the orange Zerg at the 7 o' clock position, settles with the fact that 12hatch is a good build ZvT, and finally uses it.

I have no idea what this says, but I'm sure it is relevant to the rivalry that is Calm and fantasy~

Although fantasy walls off, he does not in fact go for a fast expand, and instead takes a quick gas in his main and opens with a factory.

Busily microing the 3rd hatchery in his base, Calm forgets about his first scouting overlord, and lets it die carelessly to fantasy's only marine. He does manage to see the command center at the natural has not started yet though.

Fantasy's first vulture arrives, only to meet a sunken colony and a handful of zerglings, but his vulture is able to deny Calm his 3rd base twice as he techs to his spire. fantasy has taken his expansion at this point and is going in to the mid game with mech in mind (not surprisingly, he must have been pretty pissed).

When Calm's mutas are out, they head straight to fantasy's base to begin their harassment. fantasy already has goliath range at this point, but only has 3 goliaths to work with. The mutalisks are able to find a hole in to the main of fantasy, and go to work on some SCVs, but only to be chased out when the goliaths close in. During this time, Calm sees 3 barracks in the making, indicating he will be facing a biomech army in the near future.

On April 18 2010 17:03 MountainDewJunkie wrote:

Finally, Calm is able to get his 3rd base under way in the bottom right corner of the map, but it will be difficult to find the larva to drone up, seeing as he will need to bolster an army in hopes to defend the incoming attack.

Half a dozen lurkers have been morphed, and Calm is now pumping out a lot of hydra ling lurker, but his hive has only just begun and his 3rd base only just recently finished.

With fantasy's army out on the map, Calm moves the majority of his army around the top to prepare for a stab in the back. What Calm does next is very smart though.

Calm leaves two lurkers atop the ramp outside fantasy's natural while the rest of his army moves heads straight to fantasy's base. With little defense there, Calm easily takes out over a dozen SCVs as well as fantasy's reinforcements and some production.

Fantasy, realizing his army is too far to counter, runs his army home to clean up his base, only to be met by two lurkers along the way. Whether fantasy did not notice or lurkers, or was lacking enough energy immediately on his scanners, he loses an insane chunk of his army, walking over top of the lurkers.

Calm appears to have not macrod so well during the attack, and/or made too many drones, because after fantasy cleans up his base, he moves out for the attack. Calm is extremely unprepared, and fantasy is doing a great job of slowly crawling forward with tanks, rendering his well placed lurkers useless.

Calm attempts a small counterattack with units in the map from his 3rd base as well as other stragglers, but fantasy still has a bunker up with a tank sieged behind it, anticipating the move.

Defiler tech is not quite done yet, and fantasy proceeds to push deeper in to Calms territory, forcing him to pull drones briefly until he is able to hold down with swarm and a couple lurkers. During this time, fantasy has completely ignored Calm's vulnerable 3rd and 4th base.

With a shattered economy and tech, coupled with tanks blasting their way through everything in his main, Calm is forced to gg after another small counterattack.

Fantasy's win against Calm finishes the tie breaker with all 3 players 1-1, creating another tie breaker. Uneventfully, Pure immediately steps up and crushes both players, advancing 2-0 to the round of 8, and preventing another Calm vs fantasy game for the day. This ends both Fantasy and Calm's Korean Air OSL S1 run.

I though you were supposed to shape up on these silly mistakes in the C ranks Calm...

Now... Did this activate rage mode or tilt mode?

Let's be honest here, that is some pretty baller bunker placement.

Zerglings try to counter, nice light tight wall holds it, hatchery dies, etc, etc.

Sick timing amirite? More like any "timing attack" could have finished Calm at this point.

Definitely activated tilt mode.

The moment Calm let that bunker finish he was screwed. Not defending having hydras quick enough for the wraiths and vultures didn't help either though...

That brings us to our final game of Calm and fantasy's run against eachother in the Hana Daetoo MSL of 2010! Tied 2-2 overall the past week, this game not enough decides who advances to the round of 8 in the MSL, but it gives the players a chance to redeem themselves!

Fighting to stay in the MSL

Calm spawns as the brown Zerg at the 5 o' clock position, 12hatching once again. After laying down his hatchery, he sends out a drone to scout the ever so clever fantasy, enabling him to identify which of the various fantasy builds he will pull out from under his sleeve. Scouting correctly, counterclockwise, he finds fantasy opening with a barracks and quick gas. at the 1 o' clock position.

fantasy opens with his typical factory as he puts down his command center directly at his natural while sending out an SCV to scout.

Calm's hydralisk den finishes with ample time, and he takes the initiative of spreading out his overlords to create a slow path of detection to fantasy's base. 10 hydralisks pop out, with more rallying, as he takes out all the mines in his way and heads across the bridge to fantasy's natural.

Hydralisks poke in and see a large amount of SCVs getting pulled to repair the bunker filled with marines, then retreat after killing an SCV or two, only to run in again as a few more rallied hydralisks group up with the bunch. Calm focus fires down the bunker and begins to wreak havoc on the SCVs and marines that were inside.

They pretty much take turns. It's why it was fairly obvious that Calm would win the third game

Things begin to looks grim for fantasy, as his siege mode is not yet finished, despite getting a tank out. Many SCVs are lost while keeping the hydras at bay until siege mode finally finishes and the tank holds fantasy's expansion.

Enough damage is done to make up for Calm's lack of drone saturation and Calm takes his 3rd while getting his tech and economy back up track. fantasy is down on SCVs and still only producing off of 1 factory. Calm begins his spire just as fantasy resumes mining at his natural expansion.

Just like his game on Eye of the Storm, fantasy adds on barracks and aims for another biomech unit composition. Calms spire finishes at 9 minutes and he prepares to put fantasy on the defensive.

Knowing mutalisks are coming, fantasy has been producing goliaths off of his factory, so his tank count is still rather low.

Mutalisks are greeted by 5 goliaths without range, accompanied by a small group of turrets. Calm locates fantasy's 3 tanks sieged up at his natural, and runs in to pick off 2 of them before retreating.

During the harassment, Calm begins his 4th at the 7 o' clock natural, placing his hatchery a matrix above the mine, frankly not giving a shit.

Fantasy is turtled up tight, defending any attempts at muta harass aside from trading another tank for a muta. He gears up to push out in order to take a 3rd. Fantasy's army consists of 3-4 tanks, 4-5 goliaths, and about a dozen marine medic.

As fantasy moves out, Calm runs in to fantasy's main from behind his natural killing a few SCVs before being vacated.

Fantasy awaits Calm's attack, not stretching his army and further than what is shown above as he adds more barracks and plays a heavy 2 base style.

When Fantasy pulls back some units to defend the mutas, Calm assaults the front with a large lurker ling force, aided by his mutas, which fly back to help in the battle. Fantasy is overwhelmed and pushed back behind his bridge, where he continues to macro up and turtle.

Lurkers: no shortage of them

At this point, Calm has his 4th gas up and a healthy amount of drones with his whole tech tree nearly complete. Defilers are out and swarms constantly push back any of fantasy's attempts to break out. Fantasy tries to irradiate as much as possible, but Calm is solid at keeping the vessel count from getting too high.

Calm increases the pressure and finally pushes all the way in to the natural with his lurkerling force and defilers, sieging fantasy's natural. Fantasy's main is mined out and his natural is under siege. Calm is about to take a 5th and there is no way fantasy can make a comeback now.

This last game on Fighting Spirit ends the qualm that fantasy and Calm had during this season's OSL and MSL, with Calm advancing in to the round of 8 to face great. Rest assured, the Calm-fantasy rivalry does not end here.

(Z)Calm beat (T)Fantasy in both the Korean Air OSL S1 round of 16 (only to both be knocked out by (P)Pure in the tie-breakers later) and in the Hana Daetoo MSL round of 16.

In an interview after this (Z)Calm acknowledged their rivalry saying:
"I feel like I’ve played him so many times. With my recent wins, I’ve been able to pull ahead in head-to-heads, but now I don’t even want to pull ahead in wins – I want to hold onto this rivalry."

Unfortunately for (Z)Calm, (Z)Clam has surfaced too many times since to keep it even. The next time they met in a Starleague was the Bigfile MSL round of 8 in August. Here (T)Fantasy relentlessly demolished (Z)Calm 3-0, saying after game one that his strategy must have confused (Z)Calm so much that "his head probably hurt."

Clearly this did have an effect on (Z)Calm and before they met in the Bacchus2010 OSL semi-final he said:
"I have alot of stuff to settle with (T)Fantasy from past events and I'm glad that I can do it in such a grand setting as the OSL Ro4. I wanted (T)Fantasy myself. I am way behind in head-to-head records but if I prepare rigorously and win it 3:0 I think I can catch up a lot."

Zona will tell you about this clash in more detail:

Both Fantasy and Calm advanced into their semifinal series having won the same matchup in the quarters, with Fantasy taking out his teammate Hyuk in an uninspired 2-0, while Calm came back to beat Mind 2-1. However, their forms leading to the series were drastically different. Fantasy, despite his weakness with bio, was on a strong run TvZ, his record marred only by two ugly losses to Soulkey, dropping him out of the MSL, while Calm was putting up merely average results. Still, both players were and are known for devising unusual builds, and with them having met in battle previously over 20 times, a viewer would expect an interesting series with strategies custom-tailored to counter each other.

Game 1:

On Aztec, Fantasy lands as the yellow terran at 8 o'clock, while Calm spawns as the red zerg at 12. Fantasy walls off the bottom of his main ramp and quickly adds a factory, cutting marines, with a command center and armory soon after, while Calm opted for a 12 hatch into 2 hatch lurkers.

No peeking

Fantasy's early scouting SCV is denied by 4 lings, but he does add a proxy engineering bay at what would be Calm's normal 3rd. A bit later he's able to get a vulture into Calm's main to spot the finished lair and den, even netting 8 kills, mostly zerglings.

I know everything!

However, having spotted Calm's strategy, Fantasy is slow to prepare a specific defense, and instead simply adds a second factory while continuing to produce vultures and marines. Calm even morphs 3 lurkers right on top of Fantasy's main ramp (spotted by the floating barracks) and Fantasy inexplicably still delays adding turrets and bunkers in his main.

This might be a sign to do something

A bunch of lings thin out the vulture and marine count and when the 3 lurkers finish morphing and rush to burrow at the main mineral line, Fantasy's bunker has only started construction.

How long do bunkers take to build again?

                                                            + Show Spoiler +

With no mining, Fantasy tries to counter with 3 vultures, which are denied at first by a mass of zerglings, but moments later sneak into Calm's base, killing at least 4 drones. Fantasy begins mining at his natural with lurkers still in his main, but Calm then masses a bunch of hydraling and simply overruns Fantasy's few remaining units.

Welp

Still, as Fantasy concedes defeat, Calm had only 8 drones.

No drones at the natural, too

Both players brought unorthodox strategies to the table game 1, but Fantasy's terrible reaction to scouting Calm's lair and den easily lost him the game. He had plenty of time to set up a bunker or two with turrets before lurkers arrived, and a tank, or even a goliath would have done much better than continuing to add vultures.

Game 2:

On Icarus, Fantasy lands as the red terran at 3 o'clock, as Calm spawns as the blue zerg at 9 o'clock. Fantasy walls off his natural choke and opened with a fast starport, expanding immediately after, while Calm opened 12 hatch into lair, which is scouted by an SCV. An overlord spots Fantasy's fast refinery, and Calm responds with a sunken at his natural, and he adds a spire as his lair finishes with a 3rd hatch at his natural choke. Fantasy is able to kill 2 overlords with his wraith before scourge appear, while adding academy and engineering bay (still on one barracks).

Hi friend

He also adds a control tower to begin research cloak for his wraiths, while a pair of scourge swing by to spot everything. Calm spawns mutalisks but uses them conservatively while researching overlord speed while adding a hydralisk den, as Fantasy builds plenty of turrets and adds 3 more barracks while continuing to amass wraiths. Calm takes a 3rd base at 10 o'clock as he starts to morph lurkers, while his mutalisks finally start to engage Fantasy's marines and medics in the latter's main. Soon after, Calm sets up 7 hold lurkers as a trap outside Fantasy's main and baits 8 marines to their doom with mutalisks, and quickly follows up by attacking into Fantasy's nat with the lurkers and mutalisks (but zero zerglings), just as Fantasy's first tank is finished.

A trap, it is!

Ouch

Fantasy however pulls his units back and Calm focuses on controlling his mutalisks, leaving his lurkers to spend most of their time out of range and attacking mostly buildings as a result. Fantasy's small mnm/tank/wraith force continues to whittle down the attacking army, forcing Calm to eventually retreat, having lost most of a valuable army without doing much damage.

Danger?

Guess not

Fantasy follows up by adding 3 more barracks and techs to vessels. He sends his 2 remaining wraiths to harass, and the pair eventually end up with 21 kills between them, pillaging Calm's mostly undefended bases.

It begins

Fantasy ends up moving out with about 2 groups of mnm with 3 tanks and 2 vessels, which Calm meets in the center of the map with 9 lurkers, his mutalisks, and a bunch of zerglings.

Here they come!

Fantasy immediately irradiates the mutalisks (and a lurker). Calm doesn't bother to try to split his mutalisks, but instead throws his entire army forward into Fantasy's. All his mutaling evaporates almost immediately, traded for 1 of Fantasy's tank and just over half his mnm.

Where'd my mutaling go?

A few more zerglings help eliminate the two tanks and Fantasy pulls back for the moment, but he replenishes with more marines and medics quickly and moves forwards again. A few more fights with Calm's lurkers and zerglings ensue in the middle of the map, neither player able to threaten their opponent's base. Calm techs to defilers with consume while Fantasy takes a 3rd base and starts to plant a few mines, but the rest of the game is anticlimatic as Calm can't stand up to Fantasy without an economy, despite eventually scouring many of Fantasy's sleeping vessels, having let the wraiths fly amok over his bases.

Where'd all my drones go?

He eventually throws the last vestiges of his army into Fantasy's army and mines and concedes defeat.

Fantasy again opened up with a nonstandard strategy which paid off later in the game as his wraiths devastated Calm's economy, while Calm made a lot of glaring errors which gave the game away.

Game 3:

On Gladiator, Fantasy lands as the terran at 2 o'clock, while Calm spawns as the zerg at 11. Calm opens with a 4 pool as Fantasy starts a depot and then a barracks at his natural choke, and again starts an early refinery.

Hmmm

Zerglings arrive before Fantasy adds a second depot to finish the wall and devastate the SCVs Fantasy pulls to defend, so Fantasy concedes defeat.

Too late.

With the series tied 1-1, Calm 4 pools and wins. Fantasy likely again had a factory or starport strategy, but never had a chance to show it.

Game 4:

On Pathfinder, Fantasy lands as the terran at 8 o'clock, while Calm spawns as the zerg at 4. Calm again opens with a 4 pool, but while Fantasy again started with a depot and barracks at his natural choke, with an early refinery as well, he starts the other depot to complete his natural wall much earlier than the previous game.

Oh hey this looks familiar

The zerglings arrive before the second depot is complete and is able to destroy it before it can be repaired, but the depot buys enough time for Fantasy's SCVs to be brought forwards to block the gap, preventing them from being surrounded like the previous game.

But this is different

Calm continues to spawn lings with his next 4 larvae, but the damage he deals (6 scvs, 2 marines, and 1 depot overall) is not close to enough to make the attack worth it. Fantasy adds a factory and starport while Calm tries to catch up with drones and 2 more hatcheries, while 2 vultures pay a visit to Calm's natural and are traded for 6 zerglings, while forcing Calm to place a sunken colony as well. Fantasy's first wraith comes to Calm's bases before even a hydralisk den is built and nets 4 kills as Fantasy adds 2 more barracks, an academy, and a science facility.

Hi friends

A dropship flies to Calm's main, distracting him while a few mnm break into his natural, forcing drones to flee.

Hi, neighbor

Calm is able to regain control of his natural and save the hatchery with hydralisks on his ramp, but then Fantasy drops 6 marines for real in his main, killing a few drones and a few hydralisks.

Just dropping by

Fantasy then adds a physics lab to build a battlecruiser, and eventually attacks Calm's natural with mnm, 2 tanks, and the BC, while dropping mnm in his main. Calm's hydralisks and drones pretty much melt as Fantasy dances his BC, so Calm gives up.

This doesn't look even

Having won with a 4 pool, why not try it again? But Fantasy finished his wall a lot more quickly this game, most likely just because of this possibility, and was able to defend Calm's cheese, which allowed him to just fuck around as long as he made sure he stayed ahead. Strangely enough, Calm is seen smiling widely after the game in the waiting room. I wonder what was really going through his head.

That was good times

Game 5:

On Aztec, again, Calm spawns as the white zerg at 8 o'clock, while Fantasy lands as the green terran at 4. Fantasy again walls off the bottom of his main ramp and starts an early refinery, followed up by a factory and command center right after. Calm opens with 12 hatch into 2 hatch spire, which is seen by Fantasy's SCV. Fantasy responds with a machine shop and armory, while his first 3 speed vultures are denied by Calm's 3rd hatchery and den blocking off most of the natural choke.

Boys not allowed into our clubhouse!

Fantasy adds a 2nd factory and ebay and defends Calm's mutalisk harass with (repaired) turrets and goliaths, while Calm takes a 3rd at 10 o'clock and a 4th at 11 o'clock (the latter delayed a bit by vultures).

Repair imba!

Drone joins vulture in SC heaven?

Fantasy adds a factory, starport and academy while Calm begins to produce a few hydralisks. Fantasy drops 4 vultures into Calm's main, which destroy about 6 drones, and researches mines, laying a bunch around the map.

Nice place you got

Calm then moves out with a mass of hydralisks with speed overlords and his mutalisks, but still manages to lose a bunch of hydralisks to mines.

This happens many times

His army comes to hang out outside Fantasy's natural, where he's building his 3rd command center, then rushes in to attack the goliaths, sieged tanks and mines there, with +1 vehicle weapons. One vessel provides some support with a defensive matrix, and Calm loses his first round of hydralisks.

Nope

Fantasy added 3 more factories and uses his army to force Calm's hydralisks away, floating his 3rd command center to 6 o'clock, while Calm teched to hive and amassed 9 queens, while continuing to run a few hydralisks into mines.

I'm Soulkey!

Aside: Drop defense

An attempt at vulture harass doesn't do much damage, but Fantasy expands again with a 4th base floated to the inner 4 o'clock expansion. Calm experimentally sends out one queen forwards, parasiting a goliath, which Fantasy immediately destroys. Shortly after, Calm sends out a bunch of 0-2 hydralisks with his queens to attack Fantasy's rather large 1-2 ground army. Calm's queens turn 8 of Fantasy's tanks into broodlings but Fantasy still has enough forces left over to clean up the rest of Calm's hydralisks (with some defensive matrix support) and Calm concedes defeat as Fantasy unsieges his tanks and moves forwards.

It wasn't enough

Finally in game 5 the players actually provide some semblance of a competitive game. Still, Calm's inability to deal damage with his early mutalisks coupled with his later sloppy control gave the game away. Fantasy chugs down a bottle of Bacchus in some clever product placement with his victory.

Overall, the series was a disappointment if one was looking for competitive play. Still, it could be considered massively entertaining for other reasons. If there's one word to describe the entire series, it would be sloppy. Both players in general responded poorly to their opponent's prepared strategies, and made many poor decisions. Calm's control let him down quite a few times and his defense of his bases in general was abysmal. But both players also prepared quite a few nonstandard opening builds. Fantasy, in particular, seems like he didn't plan to open standard bio at all. In the end, Fantasy was able to squeak through and advance. But his story could have turned out differently and easily ended here instead.

This series proved to be the pinnacle of the (T)Fantasy (Z)Calm rivalry and in this best of 5 I would say both (Z)Calm and (Z)Clam each made an appearance.
+ Show Spoiler [VOD will play at specific time] +

(T)Fantasy hoped this win would help him break his Silver Surfer curse saying:
"Before, I kept losing in game 5 of a Bo5. This was the first time I won 3-2. So hopefully I've broken the curse ... and I'll finally stop getting silvers."
And indeed this held true, so perhaps this whole rivalry has helped him at least.

They have not met now since February so we are all eagerly awaiting more Clammy Terrorists. After being denied a meeting in April in the ABC Mart MSL (Z)Calm expressed disappointment promising that “next time, I’ll have an amazing game with (T)Fantasy”.

However, in spite of all the ups and downs between these players in their games, Calm and Fantasy have a good relationship, it seems to be a healthy and friendly rivalry. As (Z)Calm himself described it in a SportsQ interview:
"I talk with (T)Fantasy a lot, and practice a lot. Even though we haven’t played much recently~ But we have a very good relationship, and we chat a lot."

Thanks to Smix, ]343[, Carnivorous Sheep, rotinegg and Spica for their translations of various interviews that I used when writing this.

Huge thanks once again to moktira, Grobyc and Zona for their dedicated work on this sizable first release.

So what is next to come? Unsung II will be arriving sometime next week, introducing a new set of our writers, and the special rivalry of (Z)ZerO and (Z)great. Later, Unsung III will be a special on in-team rivalries. As for the rest, just keep your eyes peeled. Thank you for reading.

I had a laugh at this, very cool write up.

Appreciate it! Interested in seeing the Unsung 3 write up. Trying to think who it could include.... hrmmm....

(Though I would hardly call Fantasy 'unsung' tbh)

The poor man's Lee Ssang Rok. I hope one of these will cover Baby vs Kal, not only (but mostly) because I'm a huge Baby fanboy but also because I don't think those two ever had a boring game against each other

Hahaha, sick job guys!

I love/hate Fantasy vs Calm. It never fails to deliver games that makes you indecisive about whether to laugh or cry.

You guys are incredible. I love Calm vs Fanta. Moktira is basically making BW possible to watch for most fans - and now he is writing articles too!

Unsung 3 is going to be on in-team rivalries, so your guesses are off
In general, rivalries that climaxed in finals (Flash-Effort, Stork-Jaedong, Stork-Bisu) are indeed hardly unsung, i don't think you'll be seeing them in the series.

This made me reminisce about the times Calm was still good enough to win Ace matches for STX. Thank you for that.
