Hey I'm pretty new to King of Fighters and I was wondering if there is anybody willing to teach me KoF2002UM on GGPO?

I played KoF from 94 all the way up to..... 2000 I think. Really fun game, 1997 was by far my favourite though.

I own 98 UM and XI. I usually use Terry, Ryo, and Iori since they're in every game. Sometimes I'll use other characters especially if a certain character is seen only in a few installments (like Geese, Duck, or Gato). I'm not very good though and I rarely play on GGPO. I've played most installments except for XII (didn't have a console) and XIII (its arcade only but luckily Next Level in NYC has it).

I'm not really big on 02 but I play it enough that I can help you out with KOF basics. Just post up what characters you use and I can tell you some basic combos as well. If there's demand I'll do a quick basic write up on how to play KOF game. KOF XIII is my main KOF game.

Right now I've decided on and practiced a bit with Joe/Mature/Athena. However, I'm also experimenting a bit with Angel, Iori, Mai, Vanessa, and Vice.

I'll just work with your main team for now and let you know the little I do.

I don't really know much about Joe in 02, if he's similar to 13 he'll be pretty reliant on his frame trap game. Since I don't use him I don't really want to go into detail in fear of me giving you wrong information haha.

Mature is a character that has pretty decent zoning using her qcf hcb+A move. It's slow and really large and you can follow the fireball and react to whatever they do. She can kind of open people up with her short hop B, cl.B, and cr.B. Using a combination of those you have a decent high low game.

Some basic combos with her are:
cl.B, cl.B, qcfx2+P
cl.B cl.B, qcb+Cx3/dp+C
cr.B, cr.B, cr.A, qcfx2+P

Athena is a huge bitch with her incredible fireballs haha. She's a really good zoning character and that's the way I play her. The hitbox on those and the recovery is so good that you can just spam them with little drawbacks. The basic game plan with her is to throw a qcb+A fireball and run up behind it. Anti air them if they jump and throw them if they roll. If they block just throw another fireball. A good get out of jail free move is her hcbx2+P move.

Some easy combos are:
st.C, f+B, dp+A
st.C, f+B, hcbx2+P

Generally I don't use combos with her and rely entirely on my zoning game though. That's about as much as I know about this game haha. Would you like a general how to play kof guide?

I play Garou : Mark Of The Wolves on GGPO.
I have tried many many 2D fighting games but this one is by far my favorite. If you haven't tried it, you should. The game is very balanced among characteres, the gameplay is fast and technical, The 2D animation is one of the best out there.
I only see qualities on this game so I should stop now.
You can catch me on GGPO, my nickname is DiKs.


Here is a little vid of highest level in japan. Even though the game is from 1999, there is still a big community as this game is considered as the best fighting game ever. The game starts with a mirror match up, and you'll see, it's as beautiful as a TvT.

KoF doesn't get enough love in NA.
DandyDLC's guide to KoF really helped by game out. If you haven't seen it:

Definitely a good move to watch DandyDLC's KoF videos. It may seem overly basic at first, explaining jumps and the like, but it's really the kind of stuff you need to get used to when transitioning from say, Street Fighter.

Other than that, try doing some fancy combos on practice in order to get a good feel for the combo system used in KoF games. Some are more or less loose than others, but you'll quickly see all the relatively precise delays you need. Personally I'd use Kula or someone similar, getting used to the little delay when using the one inch punch mid combo. You don't want to mash, or wait too long.

So yeah, DandyDLC's stuff for poke/defense knowledge, and get a feel for combos in single player.

Wish I could play a few rounds, but I'm KoF free until XIII comes out. :/

2002 was my favourite so far (haven't tried UM or XII). Nice to see people get into the series despite it being so old at this point. ^.^

Thanks for the info man. Maybe I should switch Joe for Iori? I feel like I need a character with a simpler game plan considering that I don't even know what the heck a frame trap is. There is also a good friend of mine trying to learn the game as well, and he really likes Shermie/Chris/Angel. Could you be nice enough to give info on them too? :D

frame trap is basically an offensive sequence where u use the first few moves (lets say ryu's c.jab vs another ryu sf4) which is +2 on block, and then u follow it up with c.MP while the ryu mashing c.lk/crouch teching. both ryu's c.MP and c.lk are 4 frames startup, but the attacker has the advantage cuz of the extra 2 frames from his blocked c.jab and will most likely stuff and counterhit the defender's c.LK/crouchtech which equals extra beefy damage and/or links normally impossible (ex. akuma CH c.MP far s.RH).

and iori is always my "hope the other two did enough so this guy can clean up" character

Oh ok, thanks for explaining. Are there more complex/trickier frame traps too? And do they tend to be character specific?

Sorry breakfest, I don't know anything about those characters. I'll do some research and get back to you. And for my "basic" KOF guide it would have been a quick down and dirty paraphrase of DandyDLC's haha.

Below information is applicable to pretty much every fighting game and not just KOF.

Frame traps mostly rely on your opponent not realizing they're in a frame trap so I guess the longer and more varied your frame traps are, the more complex they are.

Generally, frame traps are going to work on everybody seeing how if they block the move you'll always have the same amount of +frames. It'll be harder to frame trap people with faster moves but it should always work.

Oh and here are some questions I have for you:

Do you and your friend live near each other?
If yes to #2, do you guys have access to a PS2 with KOF 2k2 UM?

Yeah, I go on SRK a lot and my friend and I only live 15 min apart (walking distance). However, our PS2s have been thrown out a while ago because they got busted. I go mostly on GGPO or practice with the GGPOFBA client.

Alright since you don't have access to 2k2 UM you'll have to make do with vanilla. I'll play with you sometime and you can see how bad I am at 2k2 haha. I couldn't find any info about the 2k2 versions of your friends characters sorry.

I hope you know alot of people are playing 98 UM instead of 2k2, it's pretty much the only KoF being played in tournaments right now, and the only actual KoF that we're playing at SNK-EVO at Evo this summer.

Where are you from Kaal cause I'm in California and we ONLY play KOF XIII. I do agree that 98 UM and 2k2 UM are way more played than vanilla 2k2 though.
