This has been brought up in a couple of recent threads, a choice of SC2-themed icons versus the classic BW icons. So I whipped up some icons to see what they might look like...

Looks pretty cool, I think people should have a choice between classic and sc2 icons though.

I think the main problem with the concept is that the 3D units are harder to see at such a low resolution. These icons use the in-game portraits, and are about as clear as you can get without altering the size/border of the image.

There is also the hypothesis that unfamiliar images aren't as quickly recognized. It may take years of playing SC2 for the bias to disappear. The colors really help the units stand out though.

22x22 is pretty damn small, with the border it's like 16x16 pixels. BW sprites scale better, but I think this is about as good of a concept as we'll get of units that were drawn for 3D and lack textural features.

I could try some edge-detection on the sources and cartoonify things (so to speak) before scaling, but there isn't much room to work with in the first place.

could always try using the 3 icons for races and slowly drawing in the icon per a post level.

Well if we increased the size to, say, 32x32 this would be ezpz.

I support if we get to choose between SC1 and SC2 icons, they look really cool but a bit too small. A slight increase in size would be nice

so now they will have to take him out?

Sc2 icons is a debate we don't have them not because tl doesn't have a graphics team but rather becuase, 1 the game isn't finalized 2 not sure if there will be sc2 icons and if so how will it be implemented

also there's that whole "we haven't seen all the units in the game" thingy

and you're icons, though the effort was well placed, do in fact look far more muddled than the icons we have now, and it's not because we're used to them. i know what a muta looks like, but i had a hard time locating it in your lineup. same goes for the scv, archon, etc.

the icons were very well made, and it'll take a while to part with them imo, if at all.

In conjunction with the current poll on viewable post count, many people say they use rank icons to identify seniority - in that case, implementing these SC2 icons would just make those people ultimately confused. Personally, if we had to use the icons OP made it would be a giant step back (no offense! I know you were limited by image dimensions). I don't even know half the icons there and I've played lots of SC2. The current rank icons are perfect, with only the lurker being a bit hard to notice, but as a result of it being the ONLY icon that's hard to distinguish, it's easy to associate that icon being the lurker in your head.
