On December 04 2010 01:24 dgReborn wrote: Last time I’m gonna seriously argue this point on WoW. No one. NO ONE, except arena players, play WoW for a challenge or because it requires skill. The skill cap on WoW is really low, but it isn't meant to be a competitive environment. Only the best of the best guilds compete for first kills, but even then I think they understand that most of them just have dedication over other players rather than skill.
We play WoW because of the community. Guilds can actually form very strong friendships, a lot like this LAN group, and that is what makes us come back to play more. We play not to down new content alone. We play to down new content with the friends we've made in game. These are people we toiled with to learn new content. People you've shared triumphs and failures over. And usually people you've had fun playing with for the last few months to years.
Now that's if you are in a good guild. This is a rare experience amongst the 11 million players. The players who get into large guilds and just raid with random guild mates they never form bonds with. They are the ones who eventually quit the game and go around saying how boring it is. It is not a fair judgment to not "play" the game then critique its entertainment. To put in perspective, imagine someone who has only played 4v4 bronze level play in starcraft saying the game is no fun and he can't understand why people play. That can be due to multiple reasons, Preference in game, Personal experience differing from the norm. But the likely reason is that he didn't experience the "game". The "real" game that we all experience.
We all understand that as far as execution goes it is all scripted. It is a dance. Always the same, always performing the same actions in set times. However that doesn't make it any less appealing to players. It isn't about the difficulty of the "dance" it's about the flawless execution and "performance" of that dance that gives a sense of accomplishment. Yes after a while it loses its flare, but that's where new content comes it. Another dance to learn, master and execute.
Also I don't know bout you but for most games I play I place my enjoyment far above anything else. Yes it's great to be competitive and to be able to play with skill and confidence. But if you aren't having fun what's the point?
Now that obviously doesn't apply to pro gamers. That's their living. They can afford to place their skills and the competition above their own personal enjoyment of the game. But at the start fun was what drove them.
My time spent in WoW has NEVER felt wasted in the sense that I would wish I never played. Every late night raid, every early morning PvP romp was a joy to experience. Not because of the content but because of the people I was experiencing the content with. WoW is the pure refined essence of "It'll always be more fun with friends"
tl:dr- WoW is about the friends not about the skill, effort, grind or yelling.
Edit: Now with improved spelling and grammar! Honestly, I think this whole thing is just from your personal perspective, because to 90% of the players that I have known, this is all wrong. Saying the skill cap is low is insane, I HIGHLY doubt you have ever come close to Light of Dawn, Algalon, 1 Light, Firefighter, and some of the ICC Hardmodes where VERY hard, and saying they took 'low' skill when you don't have them on farm week to week is just mind blowing. The content is easy NOW because of the nerfs to ICC to help people who are bad at the game see the end of the game, Blizzard has done this as well in Burning Crusade, it's nothing new, and jesus, Sunwell was DAMN hard.
As for friends: Yes, I have friends, but I don't raid/play with them anymore, why? Because we broke up to play with BETTER guilds, to see higher content. Saying that guilds are all about friends and all is again, wrong, because when a game gets to the point where to fill out an Application, AND sometimes have an informal interview on vent for a spot in a 25 man guild, that is really showing how they are looking for players that are willing to put in effort, and not take a walk in the park.
Example: If I was a terrible WoW player, I gemmed crit, I used PvP gear to raid, etc etc, and I applied to a top US guild saying "I'm the GM's friend, lol" You would never get a spot. So you saying that there is no effort in WoW, is honestly ridiculous.
Finally: When you ask what's the point of playing when you don't have fun, it comes down to being better than other people. Playing competitvly is not always a walk in the park, do you think every single pro-gammer in the world doesn't have days where he wishes he could be outside with his friends instead of practicing on a 10-14 hour practice schedule? But when they endure said grind, the satisfaction as a whole is what drives them, it's the motivation of possibility, and them wanting to have the biggest fraction of 'possibility' for any player, is what makes us want to, or have to, play.

the reason i think it's dumb is because of this:
other than friends, world of warcraft has like no redeeming qualities. it's mostly thoughtless and just playing for hours on end just to level up / get gear. the only thing stopping a person from being good at WoW is having a life. as long as you play a shitton and take 5 seconds to do some research every time you have problems, you will no longer have problems.
starcraft requires excellent hand speed, critical thinking/analysis, creativity, and it has an unreachable skill cap. no matter how much you play, there will always be better players.

PvE in WoW is only hard once. It's like every other game, once you 'get' it, its boringly easy. Starcraft on the other hand is hard no matter what you do.
I played WoW until shortly after ICC came out. I PvE'd until ToC and did get 25m ulduar drakes, tribute to insanity, before the 3.3. I also starting PvPing in WOTLK and got Gladiator as a warlock in s6/7. I quit because I just got bored of the game. The fact is, even at the highest levels the skill cap IS low and once you learn a little about the threads on elitistjerks, the only barrier to entry is time.
When the SC2 beta came out I completely dropped WoW because I realised that there isn't any point in WoW. Starcraft requires real skills, with real rewards and real applications. Like Blixy, I was playing WoW for the competition, but WoW is a terrible competition. It's certainly great to be able to say, 'I'm better than him', but once i saw that all it took for me to be better than him was learning to press the right one of my 5 or 6 buttons, I saw what a waste of time it was.
Anyways,,,,, about this whole two day thing. How is it gonna work? Is there a schedule or is that still being worked on? Just asking because I'll definately be there on saturday, but on sunday I might have to leave early. Will we know by the end of day1 if we have to be there day2?

I'm just guessing that if you weren't knocked out by the end of day 1 you should be there for day 2 /shrug. That's my assumption but my assumptions have always been wrong so who kows

Yeah I guess I'm just wondering if say, you were in the losers bracket going in to day 2, would it fuck too much stuff up if you werent there? XD

The moment I am playing a game and I am no longer enjoying it in the slightest, I don't care if I was a pro - I would quit. I cannot possibly imagine a scenario in which you continue to play WoW even though you want to be doing something else. Pros are in it for the money if they don't enjoy it but still play it. What would be any of our excuses...

If you are still in the tournament by the time the first day comes to an end then you will need to show up for the second day
There will be winners bracket and losers bracket games played on the first day, going to try to get through as many games as reasonably possible
The cut off point for the transition to the second day is still undecided and most likely won't be decided on until the actual event gets underway
NOTE: please stop arguing about WoW on this thread, I'm sure there are other threads that are better suited for your discussion, and if you really want to go at it you can always create a team speak user channel and yell at each other about it there

The last correspondence I've had with them is them asking for a clarification on what date the tournament will be (at the time I didn't have this thread up) and me emailing back twice asking about the merchandise. Chances are, they saw that it was fairly far away and moved it lower on the priorities list. If they don't respond within another two weeks, I'll give them a call.

I realize that some people probably won't be able to make it the second day, so any type of raffle drawing will be held on the first day. Speaking of which, the 5 dollar buy-in also gives you a raffle ticket, so spectators can chip in for the prize pool too and have a chance at a prize. However, this still depends on how many keyboards Das is giving us.

raffle will be open to anyone who submits 5dollars towards prize pool
prizes are yet to be determined
this is not yet set in stone so things can change, more information will be given in time, just keep up with the thread (a post will be made every time OP is updated)
