Introduction The University of Sydney Starcraft Society is a society based around Starcraft, the greatest real-time strategy series of all time. We’re a community that will bring together players from across the university to appreciate both the competitive and casual sides of the game, share skills and just have fun. All are welcome – even if you’re terrible, don’t own the game, or if you just like to watch matches. We will be having the AGM next Friday:
Agenda: All executives being replaced - President, VP, secretary, treasurer (If you would like to contribute to Starctraft Society, please nominate yourself!) Turn our merger with DotA Society around - officially rename the society to Starcraft Society. We will also be selling the first batch of Starcraft Society t-shirts $25
We need to reach quorum so please turn up even if you don't want to be an exec!!
How to get there:
I'll be having lunch on the same level an hour earlier, so come eat, chat say hi etc!
I've decided to form a Starcraft Society at USYD and I was wondering if there are any on TL out there.
I need at least 20 members (with access) to sign a Prospective Members List form to get it underway. Even if you don't have access it'd be nice to get you to sign anyway, however only those with access will count towards the 20.
For anyone interested, drop me a pm. I'd like to get this done ASAP so we can get this going before next year.
Finally, the eventual plans will be to hold live events, tournaments and hopefully inter-university events (with my friends eventually setting up a club at UNSW).
If you know anyone else who'd be interested feel free to forward them this message or just spread it by word of mouth.
First I have to say I love starcraft. I bought the copy on the first day and really enjoyed it.
However it will be a huge distraction for students and there is no purpose for the club.
there is no need to set up a club at uni if you just want to play with your uni buds. simply add them on battle.net. problem solved.
If you think you want to organise the club and train the members up, I can tell you know you will get nowhere because personally I have done semi-proper training for warcraft 3 when I was at school. It took me 3 years playing very hard on weekends (20hr+) and I got nowhere.
first year I was able to manage the base and my troops at the same time; My APM got up to about 150; watched 1000 replays; (terrible micro and macro)
second year, micro got much better; APM got up to about 300; still epically failed in a tournament. (terrible macro)
final year, spent a lot of time understanding the game; explored the tricks for different maps; timing; learning how to avoid making mistakes in the game;
EVENTUALLY gave up - EPIC FAIL It had no positive effect in my life. The training was painful. And I believe it will work in the same way for starcraft training. Never attempt unless you are extremely talented like the pro Koreans.
Almost no uni students will have time to do the following even on weekends: watch replays for 12 hours play 30-40 games a day sit down and spend few hours to understand how a SC strategy works
Anyway I will be really appreciated if I dont see the existance of starcraft club thx
So basically you're saying there is no room for a starcraft club because it had to be a pro gaming training camp? Doesn't USYD has a chess/soccer/ballet/whatever club? I don't see why you wouldn't have a club at your university just because you couldn't "go pro". Thats pretty lame. Most people play games for fun and it's always cool to have a place where you meet others with the same interests as you so I don't get your point at all.

what the hell? They want to start a casual club for what i imagine would be getting together for big events like GSL finals, and occasional lan meets where they play for a few hours... I highly doubt they're looking for 20 people to all try to become pro-gamers :|.

chess/soccer/ballet are activities people dont usually get very addicted. People can get addicted to Starcraft very easily. All I want to say is the chance for anyone to go pro is tiny. If only want to play for fun, SC1: ICCUP SC2: battle.net (sure the connection is good enough. no lan anyway)
If you want to organise your own lan party, call your friends/facebook events/whatever. Dont disturb other people at uni.
I know I'm not Australian and probably dont belong in this thread but as a Uni student I can't help think that you are being crazy WeAreNotKoreans, whats wrong with making a society based around a groups interests. I mean hell there are numerous societies at my uni endorsing activities which can be deemed as "addictive", poker and general gaming to name a couple. You need to chill out, university although about learning is also a social experience and societies are a fantastic way to meet new people and make long lasting friendships. Also any sensible university student will not let societies control their schedule and overthrow their work load.
Also "people can get addicted to starcraft very easily" ? I'm no more addicted to starcraft as I am football by watching the premier league every week.
I was gonna do this but I graduate pretty soon hopefully. Don't have access though.
WeAreNotKoreans there is already a DotA society and stuff and they just meet up and have fun. Can get together watch streams and stuff it will be great. By your logic we should just abolish games altogether!

All i got out of that is that it took you some 3 years to explore tricks for maps and how to avoid mistakes..
deL, zalcion and Carrierhasarrived can you PM me with your first + last names, Access id no. (if you don't have Access that's fine too :D) and e-mails. If you could get any of your friends too that'd be great.
We're almost at the quota needed to be officially a society!
Me and some friends go to usyd and love starcraft, but none of us got access xD. Hope the club comes up because it would totally be awesome to watch the GSL finals on a big screen with people.

Yep! Exactly the kind of thing we want going on.
PM me you and your friends names + AID (if they have) + e-mails. Also get your friends to ask people they know if they want to join! Anyone is welcome.
On September 16 2010 11:17 serbmafia wrote: Hey I go to usyd. I'd be interested in this, but I don't have an access card nor do I plan to get one for various reasons. Will this be an issue ?
If you don't have Access it won't be an issue at all.
Both Access + non-Access are welcome .
All this means is that your membership won't contribute towards the quota we need to be an official society. So ask as many of your friends as possible to join and spread the word!
As I mentioned before, just PM me your first + last names, e-mails (and access id if you have it) to register.
Our IGM (inaugural general meeting) must be held before we can register officially.
The tentative date for the IGM is this 5pm Thursday, 7th October. I will keep you updated on location.
This is subject to change because the people who handle room bookings at USYD have not gotten back to me. I have not yet had a booking confirmation even though I submitted one over two weeks ago.
We will have elections for executive positions and give a brief overview of the society. Most importantly, it'll be a chance to meet other Starcraft players at uni!
If you want to nominate yourself for a position for elections, shoot me a PM.
The current positions are: Vice-President Secretary Treasurer
If you are an Access member, please try to turn up as I need your signature. If you can't turn up please send me an e-mail so that we can make alternative arrangements for you.
In other news, we have formed a combined custom Starcraft 2 ladder:

So your terrible at wc3 yet spent three years trying to become a pro gamer by practicing a lot. Due to this you feel people should not spend time setting a society to appreciating a different game.

uhh how did it take you 2 years to get to 300 apm, have terrible macro, then after that 300 apm start understanding the game?
hey guys, i'll be coming to usyd in feb, im actually in sydney now for a short trip to look for housing and i found a place in Burwood? any thoughts on that place guys?
anyway i just got a few questions to ask? 1. i have a SC2 SEA/USA account, would i need to buy a new copy to play with the people in sydney? cos im assuming you guys playing on the australian servers right? 2. i looked at the internet plans and they have like peak and non-peak hours. how comprehensive a plan should i get ? 120 gig enough?
Welcome to Australia benjaminethanlim. If you're trying to live around Burwood, I'd rather look for a place in Strathfield. Burwood isn't exactly the best place to live while Strathfield is a lot more friendly (it's Korea town). Strathfield is also a lot more convenient because it's basically in the center of all the train lines.
1. Australia is part of SEA so you're fine. 2. 120gb is enough unless you torrent movies 24 hours a day. If you're a heavy downloader you'll probably have to end up cutting down on the downloads and try restricting them to off peak. If you can get a bigger plan without too much money, go for it. Optus and Telstra are overpriced, TPG has shitty customer service but best bang for your buck. Oh, forget about Optus altogether, they have horrible latency to the SEA servers.
Personally I use TPG but their stock routers (Dlink) are fucking terrible and drops out every two minutes so you'll need to go buy your own.
brijan it sounds really cool hope it works out. im from usyd but not main campus lol, not much of sc community here. So theres also no access for me but im intersted in joining.
I have TPG and its ok on SEA but the delay is real bad on NA also lol i just remember i rememeber u youngminii back then when u played some wc3 bnet with some of us nsbs haha,

Sure just give me your first + last name and email.
All are welcome!
Also another update, I'll be submitting the society application tomorrow.

Don't forget University of Melbourne!!! We got no SC2 society here! :/ i'm stuck in 'MORE BEER'!
Apparently your drunkenness is stopping from seeking out other clubs such as the Society for Electronic Entertainment www.seegamers.net .
We're not exclusively starcraft related, but we have a lot of interest in it, and we're just finishing up a SC2 tournament for this semester on Tuesday at C4 lan cafe. If you're interested in SC, competitive gaming or gaming in general, come see us!
Let me know if you guys get up to anything I can help out with, and pencil my name in for the society - I'll join if stuff is going down but not if it's just for the novelty of being in a SC2 club.

Cheers. I shot you a PM and now our first post looks a lot more organised and informative .
How embarassing, my casts and stream are linked in the OP now. Please don't be too harsh, that's what I have friends for D:
Hopefully we will have this all up and running very soon Can't wait to watch GSL in HQ as a big group and head down to City Hunter for a big get together "LAN" !

I won't make the old application public but when it comes to submission time again I'll open it up for people to help out. That's a really good idea deL cheers . TL fighting!
It was also dependent on an oral presentation which I had no part in because I was away. Midgettoes can fill in on that part since he was there.
From what I gathered, the C&S committee failed to understand what the difference between anything to do with computers is.

Then perhaps stress that part in the next attempt. I am sure TL can help on this part in particular, too!
Yeah the C&S commitee decided we were too similar to SUTEKH (a generic board/card/computer game society - with much more focus around the board/card aspect as far as I have seen), SUITS (Sydney Uni I.T. Society) and the (now non-existant) Dota Society.
When it comes time to reapply we can have a much more open application in terms of input from the community about what we want to say and how we want to word everything.
In the meantime, read the OP for our current ideas for events and general progress of the society.
Thanks for the support deL, and we will make sure to utilise TL more on our next application! :D

Yes of course. All university students in Australia can enter as said in the OP. Please consider using facebook - it's just a lot easier for us to prepare in advance.
Hey guys, im trrying to start up a StarSoc at UQ. I created this thread (http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=198459) to see if there are people who would help/join. Anyone from Queensland is free to post their interest. Let's try to make SC2 big in Australia!
This is so weird... I did my degree at Usyd and finished last year and am going to UQ next year and I keep seeing these two university societies pop up..

I wonder if anyone at Macquarie University plays? Me and my friend play and it would be awesome to have an MQ chapter as well! Let me know what needs to be done in order to set this up!

As I said before in the UNSW thread, I don't see why there can't be one at Macquarie as well. I think I know one or two people if you want their contact.
After weeks of exciting battles, the SCII Tournament is finally wrapping up! Thanks to everyone who got involved and I'm sure you will all join me in congratulating to our semi finalists:
- Jared Krensel, Zerg (aLtPiG) - Henry Feng, Protoss (LAGBreaker) - Brock White, Terran (Brockemon) - Sami Kilani, Zerg (Rampager)
But of course, the excitement isn't yet over! Semi-finals are coming up in the very near future and after that there will, of course, only be two... which means it's FINALS TIME. We are planning something a little special for the Final, if enough people are interested. We are going to try and get a venue at University with the game being projected on large screen and shoutcast live. The event will most likely be sometime during the Easter break.
So please RSVP to this email if you would be interested in coming along to see two of Sydney's best SCII players duke it out! If we get enough emails we will start organising straight away!
Kind Regards,
Jerome
