Introduction
The University of Sydney Starcraft Society is a society based around Starcraft, the greatest real-time strategy series of all time. We’re a community that will bring together players from across the university to appreciate both the competitive and casual sides of the game, share skills and just have fun. All are welcome – even if you’re terrible, don’t own the game, or if you just like to watch matches.

We will be having the AGM next Friday:

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=124850977622281

Agenda:
All executives being replaced - President, VP, secretary, treasurer
(If you would like to contribute to Starctraft Society, please nominate yourself!)
Turn our merger with DotA Society around - officially rename the society to Starcraft Society.
We will also be selling the first batch of Starcraft Society t-shirts $25

We need to reach quorum so please turn up even if you don't want to be an exec!!

How to get there:

I'll be having lunch on the same level an hour earlier, so come eat, chat say hi etc!

Hey guys

I've decided to form a Starcraft Society at USYD and I was wondering if there are any on TL out there.

I need at least 20 members (with access) to sign a Prospective Members List form to get it underway. Even if you don't have access it'd be nice to get you to sign anyway, however only those with access will count towards the 20.

For anyone interested, drop me a pm. I'd like to get this done ASAP so we can get this going before next year.

Finally, the eventual plans will be to hold live events, tournaments and hopefully inter-university events (with my friends eventually setting up a club at UNSW).

If you know anyone else who'd be interested feel free to forward them this message or just spread it by word of mouth.

ACCESS IS NOT NECESSARY TO JOIN

Cheers

guys please dont set up UNSW starcraft club.

First I have to say I love starcraft. I bought the copy on the first day and really enjoyed it.

However it will be a huge distraction for students and there is no purpose for the club.

there is no need to set up a club at uni if you just want to play with your uni buds.
simply add them on battle.net. problem solved.

If you think you want to organise the club and train the members up, I can tell you know you will get nowhere because personally I have done semi-proper training for warcraft 3 when I was at school. It took me 3 years playing very hard on weekends (20hr+) and I got nowhere.

first year
I was able to manage the base and my troops at the same time;
My APM got up to about 150;
watched 1000 replays;
(terrible micro and macro)

second year,
micro got much better;
APM got up to about 300;
still epically failed in a tournament.
(terrible macro)

final year,
spent a lot of time understanding the game;
explored the tricks for different maps;
timing;
learning how to avoid making mistakes in the game;

EVENTUALLY
gave up - EPIC FAIL
It had no positive effect in my life. The training was painful.
And I believe it will work in the same way for starcraft training. Never attempt unless you are extremely talented like the pro Koreans.

Almost no uni students will have time to do the following even on weekends:
watch replays for 12 hours
play 30-40 games a day
sit down and spend few hours to understand how a SC strategy works

Anyway I will be really appreciated if I dont see the existance of starcraft club
thx

So basically you're saying there is no room for a starcraft club because it had to be a pro gaming training camp?
Doesn't USYD has a chess/soccer/ballet/whatever club? I don't see why you wouldn't have a club at your university just because you couldn't "go pro". Thats pretty lame. Most people play games for fun and it's always cool to have a place where you meet others with the same interests as you so I don't get your point at all.

what the hell? They want to start a casual club for what i imagine would be getting together for big events like GSL finals, and occasional lan meets where they play for a few hours... I highly doubt they're looking for 20 people to all try to become pro-gamers :|.

chess/soccer/ballet are activities people dont usually get very addicted.
People can get addicted to Starcraft very easily.
All I want to say is the chance for anyone to go pro is tiny.
If only want to play for fun,
SC1: ICCUP
SC2: battle.net (sure the connection is good enough. no lan anyway)

If you want to organise your own lan party, call your friends/facebook events/whatever.
Dont disturb other people at uni.

If you don't want anything to do with it, don't join and don't pollute the thread.

UNSW thread has been created, and we should be arc registered in maybe 2 weeks

I know I'm not Australian and probably dont belong in this thread but as a Uni student I can't help think that you are being crazy WeAreNotKoreans, whats wrong with making a society based around a groups interests. I mean hell there are numerous societies at my uni endorsing activities which can be deemed as "addictive", poker and general gaming to name a couple. You need to chill out, university although about learning is also a social experience and societies are a fantastic way to meet new people and make long lasting friendships. Also any sensible university student will not let societies control their schedule and overthrow their work load.

Also "people can get addicted to starcraft very easily" ? I'm no more addicted to starcraft as I am football by watching the premier league every week.

Why don't you just drop into the computer labs and ask the people there.

I remember back when i was there..computer labs = after 4pm = 10+ computer screens playing dota and mandarin being shouted around the room.

I was gonna do this but I graduate pretty soon hopefully. Don't have access though.

WeAreNotKoreans there is already a DotA society and stuff and they just meet up and have fun. Can get together watch streams and stuff it will be great. By your logic we should just abolish games altogether!

deL, zalcion and Carrierhasarrived can you PM me with your first + last names, Access id no. (if you don't have Access that's fine too :D) and e-mails. If you could get any of your friends too that'd be great.

We're almost at the quota needed to be officially a society!

Poor guy made an account just to flame the starting society, which is one of many brilliant societies.

Besides, there are several gaming societies at UNSW already

Me and some friends go to usyd and love starcraft, but none of us got access xD. Hope the club comes up because it would totally be awesome to watch the GSL finals on a big screen with people.
EG is a great example
