I think it's mostly because of the smurf accounts. Player picking for both teams? That might work but not neccessarily.

Player picking was what ostracized the newbs in the very first tlih edition.
Cause it was always the same people that played and the rest only observed.

The only solution and I'm speaking from experience having played in every super elite S level proleague there ever was, is to stop using cm mode.
1) It lets people pick according to their limited strengths or if someone wants to try a hero he has no xp he's free to do so.
2) Cm mode for newbs is an oxymoron. People need to learn to play not learn to draft.
3) With a less superficially serious mode the veterans will feel less inclined to win, resulting in more laid back, even games.
4) I told you the bot tlihs wouldn't make it past couple months and we all know how it ended up.
So, trust me, I'm the hero you need.
My dick has shrunk to the point where it looks like I have 3 balls.

The method I posted would prevent people from picking the same players over and over again.

I'm all for it. Might as well take an effort right now and make up some organizational guidelines as to how players should behave in the lobby, e.g. after the slots fill up, all broadcasters go into unassigned and the players take broadcasting spots (or vice versa), so that two selected captains could see clearly who's gonna play and who isn't.

This is good, however right now you have the issue of the first come first served to make it so that the same people get to play a lot of times while others are forced to wait and hope for the best. If we could balance that out I think it would be perfect.

Aye, this is one problem I don't quite have a good idea for beyond simply running multiple lobbies at once. If anyone has any ideas feel free to post them.

the first idea that comes to my mind is split US / EU (if there are enough players to create a mixed lobby)
the second would be somekind of sheet with all lobbie-user and than a function that picks 10 by random.

but i dont think there is an easy way to manage a fair player-distribution.

This. Most of EU players doesn't have problems to play on USE servers, the ping difference is not that huge (at least for me, I got 30ms to EU and ~90-110ms to USE) so it's definitely playable. Splitting EU/USE lobbies into different won't work, because as stancel said, most EU players are likely to play with US people.

If we went to player drafts, we'd run into the problem of knowing players, anyways. With drafters/captain slots being mostly tossed around randomly, you'd get people who don't know enough (players/ingame) drafting, which probably wouldn't end well.

Regarding player drafting, it would be simple to simply pick two regulars of roughly equal skill to be the team captains. Yes you run into the issue of not knowing the skill level of new people but that's a relatively small hump.

My problem is more with the fact that the end of every game is met with a mad dash to the ten slots of the next game. People who are slightly slow miss out on ever playing. Ideally we'd have some way to queue up, something akin to an IRC bot where you signup for games (no ranking involved). I don't know.
