I think the other items are more core than Dragon Lance and by the time you get it, you're already moving on to larger, more damaging items.
I think it'd be interesting on OD though

OD Dragon Lance is pretty damn good, still, u run out of slots fairly fast if u go dragon lance as a first major item (not that u wont keep it for some time and sell small items first)
I did build DL for OD vs Alch mid just to get around acid spray spam, worked out pretty well.

Liquipedia now links to the standard build guides for each hero under the External Links section! L-Z is still pending approval, but should eventually be there.
I got annoyed because I quite often go to liquipedia to look up something for a hero, then want to see the standard build for them and there was no direct patch. Also for most heroes there's no good strategic advice, but now hopefully people will wonder to the standard builds.

It would probably be a good idea for the hero templates to include by default a link to the liquiddota forum thread on the hero, too.

Just tweeted this out! Very cool (: thanks a lot!

I don't see how Helm of the Dominator+Shadow Blade+Yasha+BKB makes a rational Drow build. Explain?
|
well they all kinda serve their own purpose for relatively low gold cost, especially hotd and yasha.
Hotd opens up early roshan and lets u farm without thinking about regen were as yasha is just overall good farming/fighting item early on.
I mean, what else would u get on drow as a first major item? (if u dont cout mjollnir aghs build). Blink? maybe. MoM? risky, but could work.
|
Helm of the Dominator: Intent to farm, or to have an aura creep during fights Shadow Blade: Intent to gank, or to reposition during teamfights after the enemy team gets in your face. Incompatible with having an aura creep follow you. BKB: Intent to stand and fight during teamfights; useless when farming.
Any two of those together makes sense. The combination of all three doesn't.

We can displace Black King Bar elsewhere.

I'm curious why Mekansm and Force Staff aren't in situational for Shadow Fiend. Mek is picked up on SF sometimes by high skill players and the force staff is great for positioning yourself for razes and escaping. I feel it's more useful than a blink because it's an easier build up and it provides Intelligence that you desperately need if you're going for a Mek build. Also seeing that Shadow Fiend is a high priority target when you're fighting it makes blink void as a positioning item, while force staff can help you reposition to a safer spot to raze and attack from.
Still this is just my experience, I'm not that high skill so I'd like to see what other people think of it.

Increased mana cost on both Mekansm and Raze makes it very hard for SF to sustain all the items and skills at the time u get ur mekansm.
I have never seen force staff really on SF, interesting idea tho.

You don't get Blink unless you're crazy ahead and can use it to solo-kill people with Blink->Raze combos, which Force is terrible for because you can't do it from out of vision range.
The situations where Force is better than Blink are the situations where both are terrible and you don't want either item.

I just noticed this is misleading. Several of the unranked test games on Faceless Void (like this one) were flagged as 'High Skill' level. Apparently I've been maintaining a high enough win rate while testing changes - without a corresponding improvement to my 'stable' builds for Ranked - that my ranked and unranked skill brackets have diverged. Thanks, Torte de Lini; you've taken me to the next level. It's pretty normal for unranked dotabuff brackets to be slightly inflated vs ranked ones.
Further investigation shows the divergent effect was real. I'm flirting with an 80% win rate in Ranked games since making that post. (6-4 with Faceless Void, 10-0 with everyone else. Having teammates follow up in the first second of a chronosphere is a luxury in the 2k bracket but routine in High Skill, and I needed to adjust.)

Okay, I'm back.
Been playing a lot more, maybe 3-5 games a weekday: 20 in a weekend
5 on the 3rd 3 on the 4th 6 on the 5th 11 on the 6th.
Got to test a lot of heroes and bring up some curious situations.

You're right, I will remove one (BKB very likely).

I generally make two other changes to Drow Ranger when I build Shadow Blade: 1) Max Gust before Aura lvl 2 2) Replace Helm of the Dominator with Mask of Madness
...with the idea being to mimic an orchid Clinkz, by sneaking up on an enemy and killing them within the duration of a Gust silence.
If I go HotD and max Aura, and still go Shadow Blade, it's because my team is losing map control - definitely Situational.
