Hey guys, so I'm having this issue with sc2 where the game CONSTINUOUSLY stutters every 2-3 seconds for a split second (sometimes longer), that's seriously making it almost impossible to micro at any semi descent level. I thought that the issue was network connection maybe, but I went in a 1v1 against the AI on my own, and there it was, the stuttering again.... so it seems to be a computer issue. I'm running sc2 on all low low low settings, and it still happens the exact same as in high settings. I've googled around and seen some mentions of turning off SpeedStep and Cool N Quiet, but I wasn't successful with any of that.

I'm just wondering if anyone has ran into the same issue and managed to fix it?

It's pretty much this, but a little less intense:

Press Ctrl+alt+f i believe to open the FPS display, it will display network spikes or engine stalls when you get the lag. It's pretty common to have stuttering issues with sc2, though they vary a lot by cause

Yeah same issue here a few days ago I fixed it.

See this thread : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=390808

problem comes back when someone in my house downloads torrents.... 2mb/s broadband needs to be free of any other usage then SC2 works good.

Somehow I doubt this is common and accepted. It makes the game almost unplayable at sh*tty masters level, I'm sure it would be just plain unacceptable for pros

I'll give this a try when I get home, but I'm not too hopeful... Like I said, the game also stutters the exact same way when playing single player offline, so I doubt it's network connectivity

Several have complained about it before, there's numerous issues that cause it. I had similar and really bad problem for quite a while recently until i narrowed it down to it stuttering with hyperthreading on but not without, i would get a stutter of like 0.3-0.8 seconds (or occasionally longer) as much as 5-10 times a minute, but that read as engine stalls, not network spikes. Check which it is with the fps command

Playing in a custom against AI isn't offline. You need to right click the map and create an offline game (you should notice the absence of built in latency and of network spikes). Just throwing that out there so you're sure you were playing offline, and otherwise ctrl alt F as cyro said.
Updating the network drivers didn't fix anything for me but it's worth trying if your problem is indeed network spikes. I was thinking about writing a ticket to blizzard asking that they check their routing or whatever, but they'll probably tell me to reboot my modem so..

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll give this all a try when I get home and I'll update

@Cyro: That's quite disappointing to hear then that it's a common issue... You'd figure blizz would have fixed it by now, or at least pinpointed a cause :[

Which hdd? I had some issues with those kind of lags as i used sc2 on the same hdd (ssd) as my os (win7 64bit). I solved it by installing sc2 on a seperate hdd. Maybe you wanna give it a try. There are also some tools made by the hdd manufacturers to test the hard drive.

edit: fixed some spelling issues

The sc2 engine is pretty bad with a lot of problems looking the same, the game doesn't like to load lots of data in the load screens (especially since certain changes to it back in i believe patch 1.5 which let you play the game when it was only partially downloaded and stream data)

If you get an engine stall or a network spike, they look almost identical, that's why you need the fps display thing to tell you which it is, as well as play offline. Network spike =~ no bandwidth, or some kind of issue with routing, packet loss or otherwise bad connection on your end or the servers end, while engine stall causes range from game not having loaded files properly (you can open a replay, seek to end, go back to start, x8 to end, then play it again without closing it.. that should load most of the stuff in the game) to obscure issues like the game not liking hyperthreading or some other complication caused by it on my system, because i've got a reproducable case where i can run through a replay and get 200 stutters, and then drop to bios turn off hyperthreading and come back, run it again with no stuttering, and then re-enable hyperthreading and get 200 stutters* running through it again

*reporting as engine stalls

So basically, quite a few potential issues, hard to narrow them down. The biggest tell is if it's reported as network spike or not

If you have a super low connection, do you guys think this could cause sc2 to freeze in situations?

You get network spikes with bad internet that people often mistake for other freezing issues

Well i'm asking because I keep getting the "unexpected fatal error has occurred" error and it happens extremely extremely often to the point of utter frustration.

I had the comp checked:
the hard drive is fine
ram is fine
just had a new heat sink/fan put in

So i'm wondering if the .94 mb d/l and .27 mb upload is what is causing the issue

I'm getting between 7 and 8 network spikes a minute too?

almost certainly not, try repairing sc2 client

It doesn't work, I've already tried several different reinstalls as well

Hello.
I had been fighting with this issue on my dell inspiron for almost a year; i7 8cores, 2.3GHz ; Nvidia 650M.

Recently I found solution that worked for me.
I disabled CUDA cores.
Now mine is fixed. Ultra smooth.

Thanks to Zyce@US who did wonderfull job to eliminated software-related options.
And someone at blizzard who confessed that resource stalls can be related to shader compilation.

Having the same problem now. The game shows that im getting 10-12 network spikes per minute but I only get them when I'm playing normal sc2. No lag when playing arcade games like mafia or nexus wars. Is this a problem with the game itself or is there something wrong with my configuration?

edit: I just ran a pingpath test to the kr sc2 servers and it looks like I'm suffering from a lot of packet loss. Time to go yell at my ISP.

Open Command Prompt with administrator privs
Use command below

bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes

this command helps with latency issues a fair bit for certain system setups running windows 8

Also noticed you need to update your graphic card driver.
