Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out how to run SC2 at 16 on my 16:10 monitor. I would prefer full screen windowed mode with my desktop covering the extra space on the top and bottom.
I've tried setting a custom resolution in my nVidia panel and editing variables.txt in my SC2 folder but any resolution options in the full screen window mode or even window mode are greyed out and automatically set to my desktop resolution. The monitor I am using is a Dell u3011 with a desktop resolution of 2560x1600 trying to run at 2560x1440.
Thanks

Go to Scaling options in Nvidia control panel (It's under "Adjust desktop size and position") and set to Aspect Ratio or No Scaling, AFAIK you can't show your desktop at top/bottom though, just black bars.
On windowed mode you might be able to drag the corners of the window to adjust the game screen size

I just checked off No scaling in my nvidia control panel and I don't notice any changes to my game. I can drag the borders of my game in window mode but my mouse moves off the screen when I move it to the corner so the game is unplayable. Full screen mode doesn't even display a 2560x1440 option for me

I don't think you can do that in fullscreen windowed; I can't either. You can run SC2 in fullscreen mode and select a 16 : 9 resolution ingame. That works fine for me.

Did you need to change any settings to enable that option? Right now this is all I see under my resolution options

Ah that's odd and problematic.. didn't think that was happening
What happens when you set the monitor to 2560x1440 in windows?
I'm pretty sure I've seen 2560x1440 sc2 screenshots before
but my mouse moves off the screen when I move it to the corner so the game is unplayable
Can't use the confine mouse cursor option? Wouldn't want to use that solution (and windowed mode myself) but if that works it might be an option for you
I play at 16 : 9 on a 16:10 monitor using not scaling or scale by aspect ratio and setting the game to a lower resolution, that adds black bars on the areas the game does not take up, but you kinda have to be able to select the resolution you want in-game or even out of game.

I've tried setting a custom resolution in my nVidia panel and editing variables.txt in my SC2 folder
Though you should make sure to get all of them (the one in sc2 folder, and for the account you are using) and set them to read only before you launch the game, to see if it works

This was what worked for me. If it still does not show the desired resolution ingame, it either might not be available in SC2 (seems unlikely) or there is another problem, I can't think of atm.

Fullscreen windowed mirrors your native resolution. To have your desktop at the top and bottom you need to run in windowed mode at 1440p, or if you want black bars use fullscreen with a manual resolution of 1440p.
This to change window size:
go to My Documents\StarCraft II and open your Variables.txt
Look for windowheight and windowwidth and set those accordingly.

Thanks The problem with you want to achieve is basically two situations that are mutually exclusive. Full screen windowed means literally that the whole desktop will be covered and game will be run in desktop resolution. You can not have full screen windowed with desktop bars at top and bottom, because that is in contradiction of definition of full screen windowed mode.
The only way to get the resolution you want with full screen windowed, is to change the desktop resolution to 1440p before the game starts.

He asked for his desktop at the top and bottom though, which means he'd be wanting windowed mode with the window size at 1440p and mouse constrained (i presume) to the window.

I don't know why you would want desktop at top and bottom though o.0

The U3011 has scaling options right? Can you set SC2 to run at a 16: 9 resolution (so 2560x1440) and have the monitor maintain the content's aspect ratio?. I believe you can do this through Display Settings -> Wide Mode -> Aspect. It should take your game's aspect ratio and maintain it.
No idea what this will do to input lag but its worth a try. I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Otherwise why not just run at 1440p on your desktop with windowed fullscreen? If he specifically asked to be able to see the desktop I don't know why you'd give other methods.
