QoS of Netgear router for DotA 2

Hi Guys I know we can control priority of programmes or Mac address using the QoS of the router. I have no idea how to configure or find out the ports of the programmes/Mac so I am really needing some help.

I have 2 female house mates who are constantly streaming/torrenting. I understand that they may need to download/stream their dramas but the real problem is they use Funshion/PPSTV and they always keep it on in the background despite me telling them to close it when they are not using it. Its driving me insane because they never switch off their computers and it lags my game even when they are sleeping or are out! 24/7!!

Lagging wasn't as big of an issue when i used to play Starcraft 2 but now that I am playing DotA 2 the delay and lag spikes (its goes up to 3000ms, Jesus) is really killing me.

Please help!

I am using a Netgear DGND3700 - or is that the firmware?

All help appreciated!

Remember it technically also depends on who pays for the internet.

Generally it depends on your router, the firmware is different between almost every model.

Typically it's somewhere in advanced settings, and you can generally customize priorities via MAC address or connection type.

To get your MAC address on Windows 7:
Open start menu.
Type cmd
In the command prompt, type ipconfig /all
Your MAC address is the series of numbers and letters after "Physical Address"

On win8 just search for "cmd" on the right side bar.

If you can post a screenie of the QoS page it'd be easier to help also =)

EDIT: SC2's ports according to Blizzard's KB are 1119, 6113, 1120, 80, and 3724 TCP and UDP.

EDIT2: Derp, you asked for Dota2. Dota2 uses 27005 and 27015 through 28999 (UDP).

The way QoS works isn't going to help you that much, basically it tries to prioritize video/games/voice packets over regular internet packets...depending on how their streaming service identifies their packets you may see little to no improvement since the router will try to prioritize their streaming as well as your games.

Taken from my router's description of QoS:
"QoS prioritizes high-bandwidth and low-latency services such as voice, video,and games for the best possible online experience."

That is not correct. Advanced QoS configurations can solve his problem.

Page 56 of the DGND3700 User Manual describes how to configure higher priority per MAC address. It also has options to prioritize per application (dota2 in this case.) You can try either or both those options and see if it works.

That said, this looks like its for a higher version firmware then he may have. Also I doubt he can find mac addresses. Also this is the first I've seen for a home router to have this advanced QoS option. Normally from what I've seen it's just a straight "turn it on" or "turn it off" feature page.

My Netgear router shows a list of connected devices with their name and MAC address when setting up a QoS priority rule. There's nothing to find out about. It's a bit hidden and you have to drill down several levels of screens to get to it.
