There's probably more to be said, but this is off the top of my head:

Game Capture

Pros:
-Better overall performance than Screen Capture
-Can capture games in Fullscreen mode
-"Privacy" when minimizing (viewers will ONLY see the specified game unless you use a scene switcher plugin or manually switch scenes-- they will not see your desktop if you minimize)

Cons:
-Can't stream your desktop without switching scenes (sucks if you randomly want to show your viewers a YouTube video or something)
-Probably not compatible with EVERY game, but I personally haven't had any problems
-I don't think Game Capture picks up anything from the Steam Overlay (shift+tab). I was trolling some guy as he tried to scam me in a TF2 trade and my viewers had no clue what was happening haha

Screen Capture

Pros:
-Hard to explain, but Screen Capture is more "flexible" than Game Capture. You will be able to capture and stream anything on your screen as long as it's not Fullscreen, so you can layer your windows to stream yourself playing Minesweeper with Pandora open in one corner and your chat in the other corner and your viewers will see everything.

Cons:
-Can only capture Windowed/Borderless games (no Fullscreen)
-Not the best performance (apparently it's a lot better in Windows 8?)
-Your viewers will see EVERYTHING on your monitor, which could lead to some embarrassing moments

Thanks for the overview!

So does the better performance from game source only apply when ur running the game in fullscreen mode or does it count borderless aswell?

I have framerate issues when streaming Starcraft 2. I tried it with other games and they seem to be fine. The only time the frames drop is during actual game play. The game will drop below 10 FPS at all times. Also, is there a way to boost FPS? My FPS is set to 30 for OBS and I almost never hit that number. What hardware is affecting that?

I have 3 megabyte upload.

System Specs

Oc your cpu to 3.00 ghz and make sure nothing else uses your cpu while using the computer. If the system is really old use a format. You should be able to stream with first gen i7, you may want to drop fps down to 25 though.

My CPU usage isn't even close to 40% with just SC2 running and OBS. It works better in other games. It just seems to be SC2 that is giving me frame problems. If I alt tab out of SC2, the frame rate goes back up to 30 even though the screen is showing. The second I alt tab back it drops again.

http://www.twitch.tv/hvnstudios/b/384147273
This video shows the issue. When my pointer changes to the Windows pointer, I am alt tabbed and you can see the frame rate rise. When it changes back to the SC2 pointer, the frame rate drops.

OC-ing a 930 by 200mhz is terrible advice.. by 1200mhz, maybe, in other circumstances, but i doubt that would change anything with the issue presented

I would try disabling SLI.

A single 260 will do whatever you want it to do with sc2, i mean i have similar system (950@3.8ghz, gtx260) and can max the game with over 150fps at start (while gpu limited), and game is CPU limited not GPU limited throughout the game, as FPS starts to drop. You would be expected to lose a lot of FPS while streaming, start out with something like 1280x720, 30fps output, i'd also reccomend disabling physics and putting effects on medium/low if you want much better FPS in big battles (though it probably wont change anything at all looking at base and having FPS too low) - the other graphical settings you can basically do whatever you want though.

I'm trying to setup obs to stream starcraft 2, I'm very new to streaming but I've been following like 5 guides and I still only get a black screen with a cursor when previewing my stream.

I use Game Capture as source, and when I have sc2 open all I see is the starcraft 2 cursor shown here:

https://mega.co.nz/#!khEWFBxT!MR5mqxqoOaB4ZCqRUGvaO2WdwEZTtd9DKAP9zQDkAc4

I have a very fast internet connection, I have a very good laptop, all the settings are correct according to the guides I've followed.

I tried reinstalling the program but it still doesn't work, I use version 0.472b

Any help would be really appreciated!

Assuming I have a dedicated computer available on Lan, is it possible to set up a transcoding server, in order to stream at 720p/60/Quality 7 / Bitrate of 2300-2500 (all of which my computer as well as my ISP can handle), but not penalize some of my friends who have a slow computer and can't handle this quality of stream, while I am not a Twitch partner ?

I really tried to search through google (and I am an IT engineer, so I like to think that I know how to use google) but to no avail.

Is there some general direction you can point me toward ?

Check that you are in Windowed mode in Sc2.

Just to point out, I just changed my GTX260 yesterday, since while I didn't have any performance problem ingame in 1920*1080, the graphic card was barely handling 1280x720 at 30 fps with OBS.

That's not a problem with the GPU in particular (which is capable of 4-6 times those framerates at max settings 1920x1080 at start of game and 12-15x on min settings)

If you are anywhere near 30fps outside of a big battle (where it is totally totally expected unless you are Belial88) then you probably have some kind of major problem somewhere, numbers i took a while ago with xsplit gamesource show over 250fps watching workers mine with 1280x720, 30fps stream and OBS game capture rivals or beats it at most settings. Of course, this is on low (and max settings are gpu bound) so you're talking maybe 120fps on max, but when FPS is below triple digits max and min should converge to being practically the same as long as you dont treat Physics and Effects as graphics settings

I have a i5 2500 overclocked to 4.5 GHz, and had a standard GTX260. I had Vsync on, so I was capped at 60 fps ingame. While I was always capped at 60 fps while streaming through OBS, I found that my graphic card was the bottleneck preventing me to go above a 720p/30fps/2500 bitrate stream through OBS. Since yesterday I got a GTX 660 and I stream flawlessly in 60fps :-).

Why?

Need to be much more descriptive, what settings ingame, situation etc?

It's a pretty wild conclusion that you cant do something with a 260 just because you had awful results that fixed themselves when you swapped cards, much more likely to be a driver issue or something.

How did your graphics card stop you from raising OBS settings?

I am in Windowd mode!

Anyone who has any idea?

Edit: Just tried out Software capture and that works just fine, however I still want to be able to use Game Capture.

Make sure OBS uses the same video card as the game.

Yeah it does, I've set it to high performance graphics card just as sc2.

So today, I booted up my stream like normal and for some reason I was dropping frames like crazy, I have not had this happen since starting up streaming several months back.

Checked my speedtest, and everything seemed to come up normal so im not sure why I would be dropping frames. I had streamed the previous night with no issues. Also, checked my settings with everything seeming normal.

It's possible that something is wrong on your end, but Twitch has been pretty wonky lately https://twitter.com/TwitchTVSupport

Maybe try a different server? (Settings > Broadcast Settings > Server)

I'm getting the same problem too, Game Capture was working well until the most recent SC2 patch
