1080p/1440p IMO. Maybe a 4k 60hz gsync to allow for playing some games at 4k and others at 1080p (1080p and 4k scale into eachother well, as 4k is exactly twice as wide and tall as 1080p)
2x 970 is MUCH faster than single 980, but comes with the downsides of SLI. The big ones are compatibility, more worrying about cooling and noise and then laggier input than if you had a single GPU at the same framerate.
For some examples of input lag:
144fps single GPU = ~25ms 60fps single GPU = ~35ms 60fps but requiring both of your GPU's to keep up with the resolution and graphics settings = ~50ms
some very sensitive humans are able to blind test in the range of 5-10ms input lag (usually ~15ms vs ~20-22 for example) but you usually need about 10-15ms for it to feel laggier.
I'd say the difference between single and dual GPU for 1080p144 wouldn't be that big or deeply perceptible, though you might be using that setup for low input lag and want to minimise it in all ways possible. 60fps with a single GPU compared to 60fps with dual would feel maybe noticably laggier
However, comparing 144fps with single GPU to 60fps with dual GPU would feel very laggy by comparison.

thank you. I think I am leaning toward 1440p60Hz more (as currently considering a single 980. 2x970 may be too much on basic cooling), but still depending on what i can find at the stores. Seem harder to buy stuff from stores as compare to online

Just a quick update, my friend decided to buy the Dell U2515H instead (clarification: I was looking for a monitor for a friend actually, not me buying). It seemed like he overestimate the size of a 27" monitor, but he feels 24-25" is more suitable. TFTcentral reviews show U2515H is pretty much U2715H so I guess it's a decent buy. Anyway thanks a lot for all the helps

Yea it's not immediately obvious that 27" is actually >1.5x bigger than 22"

Oh man, if you've been keeping up with the 144hz 1440p 27" IPS news, although it's G-sync, Acer absolutely killed it with the XB270HU. I know what I'm going to buy even though my GPU can't support it and I'm locking into Nvidia @_@

so beautiful

I'm not paying nearly $1100 for a monitor (uk price) :D
good for those with that much money i guess

I definitely dont think gsync is worth that price, you can get a comparable monitor without gsync and a 980 for 1100

1440p 120hz+ IPS?
There is a huge premium on gsync though. I don't think it's going away soon even if the hardware costs far less (adaptive sync displayport standard having some troubles competing)
when gsync came in on the 1080p 144hz monitors, instead of being like an £80 premium over a good 60hz monitor, it rose to like a £200 premium. Not good at all

£720 is approx $1100.
£330-420 gsync 1080p144 monitors when the best 1080p144 non-gsync monitor is ~£220 24/7 isn't very nice :D
|
ahhh okay, I was confused, ouchhhh lol
1080p monitors are useless to me so i can't get excited for them much even if they're much cheaper than the 1440p versions :p

Why? ~100ppi monitors are useless to you, or 22" monitors useless?
since 1440p isn't even a notable improvement in ppi because the screen is usually that much bigger (less than 27" 1440p is a very small niche) it's usually 1080p for 100ppi, 1440p for big 100ppi or 4k for ~130-170ish ppi

not enough vertical space, buying a 1080p/1080 vertical pixel monitor just to game on is a waste imo, 33%, 77% more vertical space with 1440p/4k resolutions makes it much more usable to code on.

For coding is different, but you can just run portrait if you want
|
Eh I can run a 1440p monitor on portrait and I'd still have 60% more space, 33% more vertical space. 1080p just isn't as useful in what I need it to do. Probably will buy the Acer if it stays short of $800 CAD...

Yeah those aren't comparable at all in terms of input lag (source: I own one) or image quality in terms of ghosting (Ultra Low Motion Blur on the Acer).
G-Sync is neither the only nor even best reason why that monitor is way superior those Qnix/Korean ones.

Do you guys think the widescreen curved monitors a benefit to playing sc2? I think it looks really cool, but if I play, would it be more eye movement on noticing minimap to looking at resources too inconvenient and annoying in general?

You have to play at 16 : 9 to see the most area in sc2. If you have a wider screen, you'll have to use black bars or you'll have some of the game area cut off and the rest stretched.
A big or wide screen would be bad IMO. Too much eye movement. If you look at other games like osu and league, it's not unheard of for high level players (particularly koreans for league, but everyone for osu) to play in a window because a ~24" monitor at 1.5 - 2.5 ft away requires too much eye movement to naturally and easily be able to see everywhere on screen without relying on peripheral vision.
You can see the minimap when looking at the center of your screen, but not nearly sharply enough to make out details or even necessarily movement there - you have to consciously glance over every few seconds, while that's less necessary with a smaller screen size or game window. Our eyes are actually very very bad at making out details in things that we're not directly looking at, and this actually provided an easily measurable advantage for me in testing - same as toggling the minimap colors on LoL, my detection rate for minimap events halved (and time took to react increased) when i accidentally switched back to the less obvious colors and it took me weeks to figure out why
|
so, for people who only play sc2, there's really no advantage of getting anything bigger than a 24"? I actually pulled my monitor back, and i do see more. it's so durr, I should've done it a while ago lol!
btw, cyro, i too have the vg248qe monitor with gsync. I've noticed in one of your posts you had a icc color profile. Do you know where to get that icc color profile? thanks!

I don't have gsync one - the gsync version won't have the same calibration controls AFAIK
even so, i don't really remember where i got it, sorry
i don't use it all of the time because it makes dark areas much harder to see. It's kinda nice to have the messed up gamma curve for some games because nothing is too dark to see then
