One of the bigger things to leave on is UAC. When I worked at a computer store a long time ago, adware and malware was typically installed manually by the user. UAC is meant to prevent this or at least give the user enough time to think "is this a good idea?".

"Sorry, wrong username or password." I've been getting this error since like Tuesday or so and even after resetting my account password, I still can't log in to the account.

What is a good HD webcam recording program? Can I go as high as 30 fps with this webcam? Is there a program that allows for doing so?

As I said, antiviruses are kind of nothing to write home about because they're constantly trying to keep up with the thousands of viruses popping up every day. If you're really deathly worried about viruses, use a sandboxed OS like iOS. One of the bigger things to leave on is UAC. When I worked at a computer store a long time ago, adware and malware was typically installed manually by the user. UAC is meant to prevent this or at least give the user enough time to think "is this a good idea?". It actually has improved, and it's about as good as you can expect out of it. It's a good option if you just want to install and forget your AV, and understand that it doesn't automatically make your PC 100% safe. My wife got a subscription for us since she does desktop support at work, and she'd rather not have to deal with her computer at home. I use it, it does as much as any free software I've ever used, with no major inconvenience. Granted, it's only about as good as the best free options, your main advantage is just being able to completely ignore it once it's installed. It's pretty good about being lightweight when you're doing stuff, and has an option to straight up disable it temporarily if you need to. Most trouble I have with it is when it screams about benchmarking software hogging resources.

The recommendation would be mostly simple because of value reasons, but the problem is she has 90gb of photos that she wants to be able to store. If this wasn't the case, I probably would have recommended the Nexus 10/iPad. The Surface Pro offers 64gb of storage for only 200$ more than an iPad, but you're also getting a USB 3.0 port, a core processor (I'm aware of battery differences of core vs a6x/a15), and legitimate solid state storage, plus real Windows 8. I know that Windows 8 takes up more space than iOS, but that can be mitigated by getting rid of hibernate/pagefile etc. I'm trying to think of a way for her to store her photos on a nexus 10/ipad, but I can't. Is there any cheap way of accessing storage on a device like that (microusb port, OR lightning connector) on one of those devices, or does it seem like surface pro is a better option?

Perhaps try to get some kind of local server storage or pay for some online storage instead? It would be much easier to access plus you wouldn't have to lug an external hard drive around everywhere. And, of course, you can be fairly certain that it will be backed up solidly.

Is this a hardware problem? The beeps have meaning related to your motherboard. Go look up your beep codes.
