Haswell isn't going to futureproof you since the chances of Skylake using LGA1150 are pretty slim. It's just about whether you want to pay a premium for the latest technology or not.

Will any 5.25" blu-ray drive upscale dvds, provided the software you have to play blu-rays allows it? I don't keep up with all the copyright / player issues with movies on optical media, but scaling is up to the software player (which they all can do?). Don't see why the drive would be relevant. So long as it can read DVDs, it should work.
These days, 3rd-party free software can play DVDs, just maybe not with all the exotic features supported.

Haswell performance should be some decent but not huge upgrade over Ivy Bridge, and it also has support for Transactional Synchronization Extensions (TSX), which could become widespread and may improve multi-threaded performance (i.e. make parallelism a lot easier for developers to implement) for a lot of general programs in the future.

People have been taught in these markets that there is a magical thing that some bluray players can do called upscaling, which will magically make images contain 4x as many pixels, generated from information that does not exist

Anyone know why my SC2 graphic settings won't stay medium? Every time I restart the game it goes back to low .

Might depend on how you close Starcraft. If you close it with alt-F4 for example your settings won't save.
edit: Atleast from my experience.

I always thought blurays just had larger storage space and can read/write faster.

Yea, but people are literally marketing that a special player will make your old dvd's become higher resolution as a perk of more expensive players.

Greetings guys, Im looking for an upgrade, here is what i have now :
MB: Asus p8p67-m PRO CPU: i7 2600k OCed GPU: Sapphire HD6850 Case : CM Gladiator 600 PSU: CM Extreme Power Plus 500W
I am planning to upgrade the PSU,GPU and the case, I would like to ask you if there are some incompatibilities with the MB that i got and the GPU also if the PSU is sufficient for the GPU and has the necessary cables needed to supply the power.
The new parts:
GPU : EVGA GTX680SC PSU : Corsair TX850W Case : Cooler Master Storm Enforcer
Thx in advance guys and happy holidays!

Ah, well. If people keep believing that stuff I guess companies will keep marketing their product in that way :/

90% of the market doesnt have a clue what they are buying in the tech industry and they get abused quite a bit over it

Indeed. Just like my monitor that's compatible with Symantec Norton and Windows 7. You wouldn't BELIEVE how much of a fucking relief those bits on the box were...

The TX850w has horrendous overkill wattage - any quality 450w or more PSU will have enough power for that system. The Cooler Master Extreme 500w is borderline because it isn't the best quality. As for cables, the video card should come with a molex (4-pin) to PCI-e power adapter. So even if the PSU has only a single 6-pin power connector, you'll be fine.
As for motherboard, any motherboard can handle any (single) GPU, you're fine there.

Ok, I understand that a dvd won't magically play in 1080p just because you put it into a blu-ray player (I know you need blu-ray or HD dvd to do that), but will someone please explain then what exactly what the whole "upscaling" thing is in regards to this? The internet seems to give many conflicting answers

However, if there's money to upgrade, I think it's a fine idea to replace the power supply (and keep the old one as a spare), because the CM EPP is not so good. Some kind of Super Flower Golden Green 450W, Seasonic G Series 450W (SSR-450RM), or even settling for XFX Core 550W / Antec High Current Gamer 520W, may be available for a decent price. 850W is just bonkers. Which shop? It's hard to say without knowing prices and availability, but Corsair TX850 is probably not the best option there.

The internet seems to give many conflicting answers It's a process of image (video) resizing, upscaling in this case. Source picture is some kind of resolution like 720x480, 720x576, whatever. There are several options allowed in DVD video standard, none of them reaching "HD" resolutions. The software player runs some kind of routine to resize the image to fit whatever screen you're using (generally keeping correct aspect ratio and putting black bars to fill the rest), if you play back in full screen or have it stretched out. i.e. take the source pixels and run some kind of interpolation to make that information fill up a larger number of pixels
There are a lot of different resizing algorithms that are used for images. Different algorithms have different tradeoffs between sharpness and different types and severity of aliasing and ringing artifacts. That said, a lot of players probably just call the GPU to assist with a lot of the decoding and processing routines, as modern GPUs have dedicated hardware to support those kinds of things these days, so it might be up to the GPU in practice.
On Blu-Ray the source info on the disc is at a higher resolution, often 1920x1080. Bitrate allowed is a lot higher, and they use a more advanced codec for compression; all these factors can mean higher quality. In addition, a lot of DVDs are not mastered that well, apparently. e.g. oversharpened with crude technique, botched job just in general
edit: here, look at some pretty pictures: http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/filter/
edit2: of course, some of those may be too computationally intensive for real-time video playback

Hi guys, I have a small issue I hope you could help me with:
I am running Windows 7 64bit, and sometimes the style of my windows and menu bar suddenly change. I normally use a non-transparant Aero-style theme, and it suddenly changes to some kind of classic oldskool Windows theme. As far as I can tell, there is nothing I am doing that is setting it off.
Screenshot of normal style: + Show Spoiler + Screenshot of when menu bar bugs out (warning: big): + Show Spoiler + When the 'bug' happens, some scroll bars also revert to the 'oldskool' look (warning: big): + Show Spoiler +
Last time the bug happened, I had Matlab open. And to my surprise, Matlab returned a list of error messages when it occurred. Maybe this will help you find the problem: + Show Spoiler +Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NullPointerException at com.sun.java.swing.plaf.windows.XPStyle$Skin.getWidth(Unknown I really have no idea what's happening, so if you guys could point me to the source, that would be amazing. Many thanks in advance!

Some programs have a disable aero option, something like that could be your problem. Your case does seem a little odd though.

There are some size considerations for graphics cards on some motherboards and some cases. Some motherboards have shit toward the rear of the board that can obstruct particularly long cards and you can run into issues in a small case with a large card.
Generally you won't have an issue.

Hello, i updated my bios, but my computer just frezup. tryed to restart but i get no signal to monitor. can i reset with MSI Z77A-G43MSI or what do i do? i took out motherboard battery to nothing helps :/

I have two monitors of different resolutions (both 16 ratio). I set my desktop wallpaper to fill and it is optimal for my 1920x1080 monitor, however it decides to display it at 1920x1080 on my 1600x900 as well, resulting in clipping. Is there a way for my wallpaper to be resized individually for each monitor?

I know most GPU companies cover overvolting through software (since a voltage limit is hardwired into the bios to prevent you from really overvolting unless you flash a different bios).
I'd be surprised if any component these days had their warranty voided by overclocking. The impression I have is that most companies allow overvolting 'to a reasonable level', ie it doesn't expressly void the warranty but it's the company's call. But if you overvolt/OC to a level high enough to actually kill your CPU, you're pretty much well beyond "reasonable levels," barring some extreme outliers. If you have an unrelated problem to the CPU while you happen to be OCing, they likely wont know the difference anyway. In any event, that's why I specified "technically voids warranty," since in most cases its a non-issue even when it happens.
No one will overvolt/OC their CPU enough to kill it unless they know what they are doing and are benching, and bypass firmware limits.
CPU, motherboard, software, generally have coded throttles and shutdown temps well below temperatures where damage occurs. Most motherboards will not allow you to run enough voltage to do significant damage, and the motherboards that do are generally very expensive, so no average person is going to buy a motherboard that'll allow them enough voltage to fry the chip. Motherboards will generally have limits put in place to prevent you from easily overvolting the chip straight to death.
You are also dramatizing it. It's more like "oh I ran 1.5v for 2 years instead of 1.3v and now i have to increase voltage to make my OC stable" or "oh no i need to reformat my HDD because i have a corrupted registry after 5 years of an extreme overclock" or the CPU dies in 8 years instead of 10 years. It's very rare that you straight fry a CPU.
Also, the specified temps and voltage limits you see listed and online is much lower than what will do permanent damage to a chip. They are temps/volts that'll shorten the lifespan of a CPU/GPU/RAM only after a very long time, and generally won't be shortening it by much, if at all, because they will be lower than what is really a damaging volt/temp.
Only damage that would really occur, is if your really stupid and do something like turn on the computer with no heatsink. A quick google search and you'll see hey, i shouldnt go past 1.35v on my i5. Maybe I'm a moron, I'm going to use 1.45v, which in reality probably won't do any damage at all or, it'd be just 2 years off of 20 year lifespan. No one who is goign to be cautious/paranoid is going to go close to the limits of the chip, even running 1.35v 24/7 will be fine.
And running an insane voltage/temp is just fine for short term. Most temp/volt limits are for 24/7, ie long term usage damage, and most damage is long term damge, ie pcb browning, shortening lifespan.
For GPUs, the bios actually prevents you from truly overvolting. You have to flash an edited bios to actually overvolt a GPU anywhere near it's true voltage limit (for example 460's can only be overvolted up to 1.087 on stock, but their true recommended 24/7 voltage limit is 1.225, and the real voltage limit line is more like 1.3v,which is far beyond what is allowed at stock). Editing a GPU bios is easy, but you aren't going to know how to do it, or even try to do it, unless you really know what you are doing - getting the programs, entering the cmd lines, editing the bios file, on and on.
On RAM, you may have voltage limits. My RAM simply will throttle voltage if I attempt to put more than 1.8v on it.
Any damage you do overvolting (voltage actually is more harmful than heat) is just going to be long term damage, like car parts, friction, it's not going to be a hiss zap and burn.
