Intel® Core i5-2410M 2,3 GHz with AMD Radeon HD 6470M or Intel® Core i3-2350M 2,3 GHz with AMD Radeon HD 7670M
Both are HP laptops I can get for about same price.
I checked the GPU performance in notebookcheck.net and the AMD Radeon HD 7670M seems to be a LOT better than the 6470M, but I'm not sure if the processor will be more of a bottleneck or if there is a big difference between the i5 and i3 at same GHz?
Thanks The i5 will turbo and the i3 won't is the main difference. Turbo is a decent improvement, but can cause overheating and such in laptops with shitty cooling (read: almost all lsptops), which drives some people to disable turboboost for games.
If you play any other games, the 7670m is way better. If you only play sc2 on med or low, the 6470m is perhaps more suited for you.

Well yeah, it is CPU based. Some of the settings in the "Graphics" or whatever for options are CPU controlled, and turning them up = more CPU load. I'm hoping to find out which one it actually is so that I can lower it.
I think it's effects, but I'm not actually sure. Effects is a CPU bound setting, which is why I'm curious (at least according to SC2). Bumping for a hopeful answer?
Edit: Original question: What setting governs the cloaking effect of the mothership? That's the only time I get a noticeable slowdown on SC2 lategame, so I want to reduce that setting. Is it effects, or what?

I think an i5-3570k, GTX 650Ti/7770 or better, and 8GB Ram should be enough to do that pretty comfortably (if you're trying to max it).
Note that your GPU has no effect on streaming itself, only on whether or not you were GPU bottlenecked (a GT610 wouldn't be able to stream ultra b/c of GPU bottleneck, but a stream would look the same on a 650Ti as it would on a 680, assuming the same CPU)
And iirc you need 5 Mbps upload to stream 1080P, 2 up to stream 720P, and so forth.

I've got two computers in my house, one on each side. I'd like for them to play music synch'd together so the same song plays on both computers speakers simultaneously so it's easily audible throughout the whole house. Is there any easy way to do this? I play music off iTunes, youtube, grooveshark, etc, so some kind of universal function would be ideal. They're both on the same home network with 192.168.1.x IPs.
From what I've looked into, streaming over LAN with VLC is quite easy, but I've fiddled around with it the past hour and haven't gotten it working. I got the stream up and could tune in to it with another instance of VLC on my desktop, but my laptop is unable to open it for whatever reason. You'd think it's a firewall issue, but I disabled the firewalls on both computers and still get nothing. Bleh.

When streaming with FFSplit I suddenly get dropped frames and then a "Disconnected by Server" dialogue box.
FFSplit Settings: Quality: 6 Max Bitrate: 1000kb/s Buffer Size: 1000kb/s Resolution Downscale: 2.25 (852x480) FPS: 25 Aero Disabled
Using the Chicago, IL Server Option in FFSplit since I live near Minneapolis, MN
CPU Specs: i5 750 Quad OC'd to 3.5GHz 8GB Ram ATI Sapphire 5770 Gfx
Internet Specs Hard-wired connection Download: 50mb/s Upload: 4mb/s Very consistent throughout the day.
Anyone have any thoughts on what is causing this? Is this an error on the twitch side? FFSplit side?
Any advice would be appreciated : ]

Do I need to install AMD 770 Chipset drivers?
I'm running a single HDD, so no raid or anything fancy. I dont know what AHCI is but i imagine it's unnecessary for single HDD.
I'm running a 4850 AMD GPU right now, but I'll be running an nvidia gtx 460 soon.
Just kind of confusing. I looked at what it installs, it says something about USB, but I got my USB driver from my biostar a770e3 motherboard site (it's 2012), and clearly my usb devices are working just fine as it is. I have usb 2.0 anyways.
From what I understand, I don't 'need' chipset drivers, but I was wondering if it was preferable. I really dont want any of this catalyst crap on my computer as much as I can help it, especially considering I'll be running nvidia soon. I just hate all that shitty ccc stuff.

And another question:
Is peerblock still relevant? It hasn't been updated in a while... If it isn't relevant, what is? For security I tend to go with WSE/Malwarebytes/Peerblock.

So ive been putting together my computer now that everything has arrived in the mail. And i have one quick questions. The Core I3 manual it says i need to apply thermal paste. I can get some but is it really mandatory.

Most heatsinks come with some already applied. And yes, it's mandatory.

An i3 comes with paste on the bottom of the heatsink.
Dont apply more.

No. Too much can be worse than none.

Make sure everything is plugged in?
EDIT, oh I know. Make sure fans dont have cords in them or something. That always gets me.

Hey, I seem to have picked up a virus. I was merrily getting set up to play some SC2 when a screen popped up telling me that windows had encountered a critical error and was going to reboot in one minute. A quick google search revealed that it a fairly common virus gives this message and windows doesn't seem to. I've gone through the most important and obvious steps(confirm its a virus, change bank and email + other passwords, and run a full scan with Microsoft Security), so are there any other major things to do before going to bed? If this helps, the infection is on my main computer which is now running only the scan. This computer dual-boots linux, so if I can't figure out what the issue is I could just reformat and reinstall windows, though I think understandably I'd prefer not to wipe everything. I also have a laptop in front of me, which is also running linux.
Also, out of curiosity, Why would someone who makes a virus make it so obvious? Do they really think no one will look up "windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in 1 minute, please save your work"? Are they altruistic? Is it a ploy to get people to change their passwords with a keylogger installed? I just don't get it.....

Hello
I have a claro halo sound card in my computer, and i was wondering what the temperature limit on sound cards typically are. I have a 6970 that is blowing hot air onto it, and i just checked my temps after a bit of playing the new hitman game. My slot for the sound card was at 52c. The gpu itself was at around 70c. I have a aftermarket cooler for it on the way because it is heating up my room, but i was wondering if i might have done damage to my sound card by exposing it to the heat.
Thanks
Also i don't know if it was my imagination or what, but the other day it smelt like burnt something by my computer. Nothing different as of yet though performance wise.

Hi
I have a problem with SC2. After the loading screen its doesnt go straight into the game, but goes straight back to the menu. I get a loss everytime, so i can't actually even play the game. Has anyone else had the same problem, or does anyone have an idea what causes this?

Anyone have any thoughts on what is causing this? Is this an error on the twitch side? FFSplit side?
Any advice would be appreciated : ] If you want to rule out Twitch (or intermediary routing) as a cause, you need to stream with another provider and see how the results differ.
It's my experience that if you experience anything with regularity, the fault probably lies within your own setup. If it were a Twitch issue then it would likely be localized to a certain time-frame (i.e. a few days and then go back to normal) and others would be having issues.
Comcast was throttling Twitch traffic not too long ago and it was claimed to have been fixed, but some users still reported issues (I had issues as recently as a few days ago with viewing Twitch, but I don't know if this was at all related, nor do I use them as my stream provider).
You can try lowering your bitrate to see if the problem persists. If it goes away then you're probably spiking your usage at certain points high enough that you're choking the connection to Twitch and then Twitch is killing your connection as a result. Well, maybe. I don't actually use FFSplit, so that error message might have a different meaning than what I'd expect from a terminated connection. Note that if you're sharing a connection and someone starts downloading off a fast site (Steam & Microsoft downloads can run very fast (as high as 5-10MBps, sometimes even more). Note that a 5MBps download would be using something like 80% of your bandwidth (frankly probably more for other technical reasons).
I don't know how other ISPs work, but with Comcast your upload and download share usage on a % basis, so if you're using 2mbps of upload on a 4mbps allowance, it's equivalent to 25mbps down on your 50mbps down pipe. It's been a little while since I've checked to see if this is still the case, admittedly.
My bet for most likely culprit is basically that your network is somehow spiking in traffic at the points during which your stream lags out.
