So I was thinking about building myself a computer. If i want to play HOTS on high-max settings how much should i be spending. Since I was thinking about buying a laptop anyway I think a good budget is about 600$. Do you think thats enough or should i spend a little bit more.
That depends on the framerates and quality of play you are looking for, and on resolution etc. Ive got a friend that plays the game maxed on a core 2 duo and gts250, but if you want the best experience you will want a sandy or ivy bridge i5, overclocked if you are capable with 4gb RAM (or 8) and a graphics card as high-end as possible
Edit: If you meant a laptop, you're not going to get any kind of good performance with the game maxed at that budget

Nah im not gonna buy a laptop because i won't be getting a good performance. Since I don't know too much about overclocking i think i want to avoid that. I want to have sufficient framerate to avoid lag so i would be happy with high settings and no lag vs max and a little bit of lag.
As for monitors whats the best resolution?
Thanks guys.
I didn't want to buy a laptop because I realized it wouldn't be good for gaming and I don't need it for school for another year or two
EDIT: Im kind of computer illiterate if you can't tell

That being said. I wouldnt suggest buying a laptop. Not for gaming anyway. People get serious buyers remorse with that. And for $600 I dont think you will get much. Reread what he said carefully (it's worded really ambiguously) and tell me if you agree with how I interpreted it:
Paraphrase: "I am looking to build myself a (desktop) computer that can play SC2 very well blah blah blah. As I was previously going to get a laptop, I think allocating about $600 for this desktop is a good amount. Is this enough to build a good desktop for my needs."
Sorry if I misinterpreted, but this is what I understood his post to mean.
EDIT: Whoops didn't see his successive post :/

ya im clarifying a bit. The original intent was to get a laptop, but I'd rather play SC2, and so for that end all the money i was gonna spend on a laptop, I will put toward building a new desktop.

A program like itunes.. so basically a music player? What's wrong with Foobar or Winamp?
does last fm let you pick a bunch of songs and make your own playlist? i thought it was just internet radio like...pandora.
Yea, foobar, winamp. What's the best sort of music player out there? that i can make playlists with. or least resource intensive i suppose, really dont need many features besiidies making a playlist.

Yes, last.fm allows you to create a playlist and export it as well.
Foobar would be the best. Lightweight and most customizable.

Thanks.
ew i think you have to pay for every track on last.fm and buy everything.
it seems like playlist.com is a free way to do this sort of create/edit/make playlist thing, the only problem is a limited selection, but ive still been impressed that they at least have the big songs of every niche artist ive looked up. i think i'll play around with playlist for a bit and then just get a program, foobar, and get the music.

Everything on last.fm is free except the music streaming service...

To elaborate on last.fm, what you need to do is find all the music you want on the website and "add it to library." Then you can play the library radio which will play songs at random from your library. Since you only added songs to your library that you want to hear, only those songs will be played.
Just keep in mind that it automatically adds every song it plays to your library (you can disable this though I think). If you use other services like mix radio (Library+recommendations) then you can end up with songs that you don't want to listen to. They can be removed, but it is time consuming to find them if you have a huge library and you don't know what it added. Should also download their little audioscrobbler thing. If you have all the music you want to listen to on CDs you can play it through any program (you have to DL an additional extension for it though) and then it'll add it your library for you. Much easier than going through the website and adding it all manually.

^ You guys sure about that? It looks like they removed playlist features in 2010, that you can't just make a playlist and play songs from it. All I've been able to do is create playlists that can play 50 second snippets of songs...
and yea i can't figure out how to remove songs from my library.
just going to use playlist.com for now and eventually go with foobar.

It was indeed removed along with playing your loved tracks. My workaround described above is your best option though if you want to use last.fm
There are two ways to remove from library. If you want to remove an artist from your library you can go to the artist page, click on your scrobbles, and then remove from library. Alternately you can find the song listed somewhere and in the dropdown menu you can select remove from library. You may have to open and close it for it to update as it might give the option to add at first instead.
You can browse through all the artists in your library by going to http://www.last.fm/user/*Insert account name*/library. If you're relatively new it should be easy enough to remove unwanted things. All their songs should be listed if you browse through their albums from those pages if you just want to delete specific songs.

Well I've used the normal last.fm radio before so i have 28 pages id have to delete... i havent even used last.fm that much.
maybe i should jsut create a new account. thanks for your advice though.

Can anyone direct me to the streaming with 2 computers guide?
|
Would you make a clean install if you are upgrading to win8 form win7 or is the upgrade option ok? I got so many things installed that the thought of installing everything from scratch isn't too appealing (not to mention remember where I've got all my installation cds and files and backing up everything). Most seem to say a clean install is better but I'm not sure what the advantages/disadvantages really are.

Clean install, ninite can help with reinstalling everything.

Does disabling Window's aero actually increase FPS for SC2? I don't stream, just normal play I did a search on Google and Teamliquid but people had different results :S. Also, I've heard that playing in full screen automatically disables it? Is that true?

It varies, depending on how the specifications of your computer. Some very weak computers may notice a difference when aero is disabled, but I would argue a majority of users would not see a difference at all. Afaik playing full screen does not disable it, as it has no reason whatsoever for doing so.
Anyways I have a problem myself. I just got my clip-on mic today, and I can't turn off the microphone. It's on always, and there's no drivers I had to install for the microphone. It was just plug-and-go. So I can't disable the "listen to this device". Any ideas?
|
Check your audio drivers, you might have to disable the microphone playback.

Why did I miss such a simple thing. The issue was coming from my headset obviously. Thanks for the help Medrea.

Oh that worked? Cool. What was it called again? For me its a just a mute checkbox. If its unmuted it plays in my ear. If its muted, programs can still use it. Not very intuitive if you ask me.
