Bottoming out on Keyboard?

Hey there,

I got my Das Ultimate with browns a few weeks ago and I'm loving it so far. Recently, I've been reading about how people with mechanical keyboards can type and game faster because they don't have to bottom out (push all the way down) on their keyboards. I find myself bottoming out quite often on my keyboard and I've been trying to teach myself to only push down until I feel the bump.

I was wondering what you guys think about this since I know there's quite a few people out there with mechanical keyboards. Do you find yourself bottoming out on your keyboard? Is there a point to what I'm doing or am I wasting my time? Will it make a difference?

Thanks in advance for your input!

i used to bottom out (i got a blackwidow a few weeks ago) but i dont do it as much nowdays.
tobehonest, it doesnt even matter if you bottom out or not, when i start typing faster i dont bottom out (theres a few keys that do), but when im typing slowly or doing slow things, i bottom out on every keypress.

its all about the comfort really. not bottoming out is nice and adds to speed, but its not something to stress over, and when you do bottom out it just means that you dont need the millisecond saved by not bottoming out.

when you put enough pressure to go over the bump, thats already enough pressure to hit the bottom. no point pushing a car up a hill and wondering why it rolls down the other side.

EDIT: this post is garbled cause im tired \:D/

I don't think there is anything wrong with bottoming out. I'd rather bottom out than miss a keystrok. So I err on the side of too much force.

In my opinion, bottoming out on a mechanical keyboard kinda defeats the purpose of getting it, unless you just got it because you liked how it felt, or liked the sound, or some other aesthetic issue. If you bought the keyboard because it might make your typing better, or your gameplay better, you NEED to avoid bottoming out on it.

I'm currently stuck on a laptop with scissor-switches, which force me to basically bottom the keys out, and I still occasionally miss letters when typing quickly because I don't have the habit of always completely bottoming everything out (although actually part of my problem is that if I press on the corner of a key and bottom the corner out, it doesn't always actually trigger the switch).

I disagree if you're a typist who bought a blue switch keyboard you should definitely avoid bottoming out. As you gain a tremendous advantage in not bottoming out in speed. If you're a gamer with a blue/brown switch you will always bottom out. When playing games you aren't concerned with the most efficient typing your adrenaline is rushing and you're trying to win. Everyone will and should bottom out when gaming, it's not a big deal to avoid.

With cheap keyboards I often had problems with keys getting jammed in their movement when I did not hit them in the middle (in particular wide keys like Shift, Space and Enter). The Cherry switches make it so you can hit the keys in the corners or kinda push from the sides and the keys will still move fine, so that's a reason for me to use mechanical keyboards despite bottoming out while gaming.
