Is it normal for your starcraft 2 to take 2gb+ of your ram?

While I'm playing starcraft 2, my ram usage goes up to 80percent.

well on the bright side, considering it's a 32 bit program I am pretty sure it can't use much more memory than that

some people only use like 1gb ram. I use all low settings on starcraft 2, is there any way to decrease the ram usage?

Whoah, didn't know it used that much haha. Will have to check next time I'm on.

Most computers should have 4GB at least these days.

get 4gb of ram

u can plauy music, have multiple webpages out, play sc2, skype, plus for 4 gb u can find it about 40 for the whole thing. make sure ur comp can hold DDR3 because DDR3 is the fastest. DDR2 and DDR will cost more and arnt as effective.

be smart and get 4 gb of DDR3 ram (if your motherboard can hold.)

If you're in big games/battles, then yeah, it is supposed to.

as you can see, I'm not in a battle or anything. If I was in a big battle, I would be microing right now, not taking screen shots. xd

My SC2 uses 1-2GB of memory I think, on windows 7 x64, 4GB memory.
Sorry for that general estimate... all I know is that I think it uses less memory after fresh starting/restarting (of the game).
Edit: after logging in, but before playing a game, SC2 uses 650MB working Set, 750 MB Private bytes. I have seen it go up to 2GB though, just need to play enough without restarting.

Your task manager might not be giving you a very accurate indicator of memory usage. Windows Task manager uses Working Set size, as opposed to Private bytes.

Private bytes isn't a completely accurate indicator of physical memory usage (it includes virtual memory— if you disable virtual memory it might be very accurate, although that is not a good idea to do for continual/normal use as it would offer poorer performance), but it is better than working set.

According to task manager, my SC2 starts out using roughly 1.4GB of RAM. The more games I play without closing it, the more RAM it starts to take up--up to a maximum of about 1.9-2.2 GB of RAM.

(I'm running Win7 x64 with 18GB of RAM, for reference.)

I don't think SC2 can use 4GB memory on Win7 64-bit because the game itself is 32-bit? Interesting. When I get home I'll check as I have Win7 64-bit as well.

EDIT: Nevermind did some research and realised 64-bit OS will use 4GB+, the bit of the software doesn't matter.

it'll use as much as it can with vista/win7 x64, and much more at higher settings and those two also use more for other functions

I remember once about a week ago I alt tabbed really quick and my RAM usage bar which I always have running was showing 80% usage (I have 6GB RAM) For some reason SC2 was spiking up to almost 3GB. Usually runs at just under 2GB, also I run all settings on Ultra if that helps.

I just upgraded from 2 to 3GB and if anyone is trying to run SC2 with only 2 they should DEFINITELY upgrade to 3.

My SC2 takes about 2Gb too. My total RAM usage is 4Gb altogether. But I have a 8Gb RAM so its no problem

(these calculations are for 32-bit software on a 64-bit OS)
I thought it was 2GB but after some research I found out that it can address that if it is linked with a flag called /LARGEADDRESSAWARE it can go the the maximum of 2³² of addressable space which is exactly 4GiB. Of course it can always spawn another process to get an additional 4GiB but I hightly doubt it.

Starcraft 2 holds on to the RAM space that it uses. If you use 2GB of RAM while in a big battle, Starcraft will reserve 2GB from your system until you close it. Doesn't matter if you go back to the lobby, or go into a less intensive time in the game. That 2GB of RAM belongs to Starcraft until you exit the game.

I would check the Physical RAM usage against the Commit when SC2 runs (use Process Hacker or the like). I know that mine - on low settings - starts out at about .5GB but it can triple that after a few hours of playing. Is this when you first start the game, and is it actually using all those RAM pages or just reserving them?

SC2 is Large Memory Aware so it actually can address more than 2GB of memory.

I dont really see the problem with this unless you're planning on watching a movie whilst playing starcraft.

games these days are just like that. D:

You shouldn't be concerned by that memory usage. Starcraft will just take as much memory as it is possible. Most of the time this memory isn't used - just reserved. You can check all of it in your Resource Monitor (it's accesible from Task Manager). You will see there whick amount of memory is being used, which is reserved and how much of your RAM is ready to be given to other applications.

So even if your memory usage looks high you can usually still run some additional applications, cause they will take unused memory from sc2 and everything should work allright. CPU meter can go wild but whole thing should work fluently
