Hi,

Looking to update my PC which is now almost 4 years old. I got quoted $876.85 by one of the reps from Dell for a desktop:

2nd Generation Intel® Core? i7-2600 Processor (3.4GHz, 8MB, 4C)
4GB (2X2GB) Dual Channel DDR3 1333MHz SDRAM Memory

16X DVD+/-RW drive
1GB AMD Radeon(TM) HD 6450 (DVI, HDMI, VGA)
Genuine Windows® 7 Professional SP1 64 bit (English)
Dell(TM) 23" E2311H Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor (VGA & DVI) ANZ
Keyboard & mouse
No speakers

I know its a computer build thread but im really not confident to do that myself; just wondering if this is good value and will it be able to play the latest games at a reasonable level?

cheers

Well you could upgrade the GPU (6450 is awful) and then you would have a decent $1100 dollar computer.

Especially if you NEED the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

I would also suggest replacing the PSU with a nonshit PSU the dell most assuredly has.

The HD 6450 is horrible for gaming. Especially on typical resolutions like 1600x900 or 1920x1080.

You can get a better deal from boutiques or even better from building it yourself. Only good thing about is it comes with keyboard, mouse, and monitor.

Hearing that h61 mobos can be used with the ivybridges sealed the deal for me. i3 it is for me then.

If you really need multitasking you will need an i5, which is like close to double the price of the processor. Although I would probably feel better getting an i5 now, then skipping Ivy bridge altogether, than upgrading from an i3-2100 to potentially any Ivy Bridge processor, if that makes sense. (This was the reasoning behind my purchase anyway).

It depends what is meant by multitasking, since most tasks use a trivial amount of CPU resources. I agree that Ivy Bridge is probably not worth an upgrade, but an i3 should be plenty good for most people. Just don't come back crying if actually you wanted to stream your games, do batch encoding jobs all day, or something like that.

I meant like watching a stream on one monitor, while gaming on another monitor. And maybe talking to a friend on skype while you have 20 tabs open on your browser.

I only have one monitor but I do sometimes play games on windowed mode whilst watching something. Should this change my choice of cpu?

I don't know. I've found the difference between dual and quad-core on multi-tasking to be insignificant. In my experience, it has more to do with having an SSD + sufficient RAM.

As long as you aren't doing a lot of generally CPU-intensive tasks, I would probably even suggest just getting a G850. It'll make upgrading to an i5 that much more significant on performance, but not feel like such a significant hit on the wallet (sunk cost of ~$120 vs ~$95).

Especially since a G850 vs Core i3 2100 is going to be identical for gaming. And if you're that concerned with a budget.

And if you're looking at your choices of Ivy Bridge; especially if you're forecasting a near 100% sure upgrade, it makes the most sense to me.

Hello everyone,
I am getting this error on 2 different machines:
~display driver stopped responding but has recovered~
1st system:
2500k OCed
560Ti (not OCed)
Z68 Giga motherboard
XFX 450W PRO450W Core Edition
(Screen goes black for ~3 secs, i think monitors dont get any signal, and then everything comes back with the error msg)
(Happend 3-4 times when browsing the internet (maybe watching a video on youtube)
(Have had the computer for ~4 months and problem started occuring 1 month ago)

2nd system:
2500k (not OCed)
6950 1G (factory Oced)
ASUS P8Z68-M Pro Z68
Seasonic S12II 520W
(new system, happend 2-3 in 2-3 days of use, once playing Dragon Age)
(Screen froze in Dragon Age, Alt tab and see the error message, but was able to go back into game (game didnt crash))

I have checked temps on both machines when this happend and thats not the problem.
Rest of research shows that this could be due to power management/unstable OC/RAM issues. I will reset my bios/OC on 1st machine and see what happens.

Any info would be appreciated.

Have you updated the drivers?

I had this happen to me on a GTX 460 for quite some time (error with display driver stopped working), and then it just randomly stopped.

Not really. Not for the cost anyway, i3-2100 is pretty cheap. Upgrading off it to Haswell isnt so bad.

Thanks very much for your feedback Medrea, jacosajh and skyR.

I spoke to the rep about a PC more suitable for gaming including upgrading the GPU, here is what was recommended;
Standard Fan and Heatsink(95W)
2nd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2320 Processor (3.0GHz, 6MB cache)
Chipset Intel® H67
8GB (4X2GB) DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz Memory
1TB SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive with Native Command Queuing
1.25GB GDDR5 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 560 Ti
DELL ST2320L 23"W HD Monitor with WLED

How does this sound?
Do I need the i7? I feel like I need an i7

Cheers

If it's for the same price thab it's miles better. It'll allow you to play most games on reasonbly high. And no, you don't need an i7.

You absolutely do not need the i7. It's only improvement over the i5 is a small increase in clock speed & hyperthreading (hyperthreading provides essentially no benefit for gaming). The GPU is a HUGE upgrade. If this option is a comparable price price, it's way better than the first option. In hard drive size and ram amount, too.

That particular i5 is close to (though not quite) as good as it gets for gaming unless you're overclocking. It looks to be similar to the i5-2400 and just a tad slower than the i5-2500. It's not a big difference (and you shouldn't overclock if you don't have the confidence to build your own computer - that's easier).

Still probably has a crap power supply, but that might not be a fixable option.

Much better. But how much are they charging you for it?

As reference, here's about what you should be paying for it:
Desktop, Mouse, Keyboard ~$1000
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227322
Screen ~$150
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236079

If they're charging you upwards of ~$1300, it might not be a good deal.
