Hello guys, I never thought I would be making a new computer yet AGAIN (especially so soon after you guys helped me), but my dad's birthday is coming up, and I am not good at making a non-gaming/H67 computer.

+ Show Spoiler +
Budget: Not really any at all, but obviously I do not want to overdo it at all as my father does not game in the slightest bit (he thinks its retarded in every possible way). Also need a monitor, so W/O a monitor, probably under 600.

Resolution: idk if he is using 1650x1080 or 1920x1080. Probably makes a difference, but I want to surprise him as a gift so I do not want to ask him about resolutions. If I do manage to slip the question through, I will update it.

Uses: Youtube, Browsing, eMail, Movies, Light Photoshop ALL SMOOTHLY, ALL

Upgrade Cycle: Probably none, he thinks my old Q6600 and 5670 was perfect as a computer.

Plan on Building It: December, going to buy the parts every week when there are deals.

Overclocking: Nah

OS: Might actually buy one this time for him instead of pirating, please post what I should use the $100 for if I am not.

No dual GPU for sure.

Buying from Newegg or Amazon (California)

I will go into more detail, I am thinking a graphics card of a 5670 1 GB will be perfect for him, as he never touches real games. Intel 2400 would also be my personal preference, though I am not sure if it will fit into the budget. What motherboard should I use with a 2400, H67 or H61?

The main thing I want is for it to run 100% smooth with no issues outside of games. Since I am abusing shellshocker, just please post the name of the parts, no specific links or brands please. I think I already understand how to build a computer and its parts.

EDIT: My idea is:
Intel Core i5 2400
ATI Radeon HD 5670 1 GB
4 GB DDR3 RAM
WIndows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit
500 GB HDD

Discrete cards are really only for gaming. If he's just doing word processing, browsing, and photoshop than the HD2000 on any Sandybridge processor is more than enough already. Unless he has USB3 external devices such as a camera or HDD than a H61 motherboard should be fine.

You're probably looking at around $450 for the components alone.

Decent deal for the Corsair CX430 V2 atm, $40 ($20 after mail in rebate): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

If he isn't gaming, his resolution isn't all that important. Something low end will do fine, like a GT430 or 520, just to have discrete graphics for better movie quality. Mind you, this is only if he's going to be watching HD movies and cares about good quality. Otherwise, like skyR says, IGP is fine.

I'd say a SB pentium, like a G840 on H61, 4GB DDR3 1333, and random decent 7200rpm HDD of appropriate size. You'll come in well under $600 doing that.

I'd use a i3-2100 with its integrated graphics, since the processing requirements are all pretty low. It's better in every way than the Q6600, if that means anything. You may as well just throw in a motherboard with USB3 support, since that would be one of the only things people would actually notice.

RAM is also something people notice, and even though he probably won't need more than 4GB, it's possible that one day with the right combination of things having been left open, 8GB might be useful. 8GB is so cheap now you may as well just get it.

If you think he will care, I'd use a more rigid, non-cheap-looking case like maybe the Antec NSK3480 (included PSU should be an Earthwatts 380W model, maybe the Green 380D these days)?

I really underestimate Integrated GPU then, I always thought they were absolute trash for anything including Youtube. I guess I should give the HD 2000s a try...

IGP is what lower end laptops for non-gaming use tend to have. The places those tend to have issues with stuff like streams is usually either being connected to shit wireless, or having too little or too shitty of memory to buffer well, or a combination of both.

Like I said, if you want to overkill the GPU, a 430 or 520 will be more than enough for those uses.

GT 520, $20 AMIR. Not expensive, and will give you the peace of mind if you really don't want to risk IGP, or if he does HD video and would freak if he can't set the output frequency to match the framerate of the video.

The only IGPs I have used were like the Intel Media Accelerator crap with the Intel Atom and stuff. So the HD 2000 can run 1080 Youtube videos smoothly with good internet?

The IGP on mobile C2Ds can handle that as long as the connection is good.

It should be that any of those Sandy Bridge processors can handle realistic 1080p videos without hardware acceleration. Certainly the HD 2000 should have no problem anyway.

Sorry for asking again, I'm still trying to decide between these two
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ASUS - Laptop / AMD A-Series Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive - Brown Suit/2881042.p?slloc=01&skuId=2881042&slref=10&id=1218360613837
and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215119

The ASUS graphics card is actually 6720, not 6650, so I think in terms of graphics they are somewhat comparable. Only thing I'm worried about are the processors. At this link
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD A6-3400M APU with Radeon HD Graphics
the AMD A6-3400M is ranked higher than the i5-2410M, but it has less sample sizes and apparently performs better in benchmarks than actual performance.

The ASUS should be fine late game though on medium settings though? Or even low? I'm just worried about the processor. I feel like it's not worth it to go from $450 to $680 for just a better processor, however that is a safer bet I think.

edit: really late response lol

Well yeah if you can keep all the cores busy on both processors, the four cores on the A6-3400M combined might be slightly better than the two cores of the i5-2410M. That's not going to happen in most games and particularly not SC2, so the i5-2410M will be much faster in those.

A6-3400M is kind of disappointing because of the clock speeds, even with the Turbo Core to 2.3 GHz. It's no better than what AMD had before in laptops in terms of performance (power consumption/battery life much improved though)--actually worse than a few models for gaming. See here:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4616/llano-in-the-wild-toshibas-satellite-l775ds7206

The so-called Crossfire between the A6-3400M's integrated HD 6520G (320 shader part like desktop HD 5570) and the HD 6650 is called the HD 6720G2. Driver support is kind of hit-or-miss and you may get even more of the weird micro stuttering and associated Crossfire problems, since you're not even combining two of the same part. Sometime performance is worse than just using the discrete part alone.

As of now those integrated/discrete Crossfire combinations are only supported in certain DirectX 10 and 11 titles, so you're out of luck for SC2. Or maybe that's not such a bad thing after all. Treat it as a HD 6650 only.

That said, given the price difference, I'd still get the AMD laptop unless you know that lower fps at the end is going to bother you a lot.

I have finally completed my build! This is what it looks like...(lots of combo deals, rebates and promo codes):

Antec 300 Illusion $59.99 ($49.99 AMIR)

XFX 6870 $179.99 ($149.99 AMIR)

Corsair Builder Series 430W PSU $44.99 ($19.99 AMIR and Promo Code)

Cable Ties $4.49

Intel Core i5 2500k $219.99 ($204.99 After Promo Code)

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus ($29.99)

Seagate 500GB HDD and Samsung DVD Burner Combo Deal $52.48

MSI P67A-43C Motherboard and 8GB Patriot RAM $147.98 (107.98 AMIR)

After shipping it comes to $728.61 (AMIR $628.61)

This is the lowest price I've had for configuration in the last couple of weeks by like $45, plus I get 8GB of RAM.

Any thoughts of suggestions or links to a better deal?

I plan on OC'ing the 2500k to about 4.5GHz. The eXtreme Power Supply calculator puts a recommended PSU at 401W.

Should I use the OC Genie on the MSI board to do the OC'ing? I've never done an overclock before.

Thanks!

EDIT: I plan on buying this in the next 48 hours.

OC Genie will do the job though it'll probably use too much vcore. You'll get better results if you do a bit of research and do it manually.

The CX430 V2 only comes with three molex connectors and one PCIe connector. The Antec Three Hundred Illusion comes with four fans while the 6870 requiring two PCIe connectors. Two of three molex connectors will be used for a PCIe adapter. This means you need to buy three molex to header adapters for your case fans. So ya... even though it's adequate for the configuration, I suggest you get a better one unless you don't mind dealing with a lot of adapters.

Most power supply manufacturers are nice enough to provide zipties so you probably shouldn't purchase separate ones.

But the case fan molex connectors can be chained to each other. The connectors are sufficiently long that I think the top fan and front fans can share connections with the molex plugs being used for the 6-pin PCIe adapter. The rear fan can go into the last molex connector on the chain. This sounds pretty messy though, that's for sure.

I've seen much weirder wiring before though (just maybe not for a computer, not that I actually look at the insides of many).

how about this, will it work?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371048

only $49.99 AMIR.

I know its overkill but the XFX 450 is 44.99 AMIR but also costs 9.65 to ship so in the end the antec one is cheaper.

Is it of less quality? i think it is still a rebranded seasonic

Yes, it's still a rebranded Seasonic. If you want to deal with mail in rebates than it's a good choice.

What about this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371049

with promo code and after the rebate, it is only a $10 difference from the other.

it has a 5 year warranty.

would i ever use a 750w PSU?

Also, is 4.5GHz reasonable for a cooler master hyper 212 plus?

if say.... I wanted to push it to like 4.9GHz, what would be a better cooler?
