HD6850 or HD6870. HD6850 is around $150 and the HD6870 is around $170 after rebates, both very good.

Take your current FPS and double it. That's what you'll be getting with any of those cards.

If you're talking about 1920x1080 and high quality in all games, you're looking at 100% minimum.

Looking for some guidance. I'm not sure what watt PSU to get for the following:

i5 2500K (Probably OC'd w/ Hyper 212+ heatsink)
Asus Sabertooth P67 Mobo
8GB DDR3 RAM 1600MHz
PNY GTX 560Ti OC2
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD
DVD-RW Drive

A ~500w power supply is adequate for a single card configuration. If you're looking to do SLI than a ~650w unit will do.

OK. I want a modular PSU. Are either of these good or should I just pay the extra and get a Corsair HX650?

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/650w-xfx-xxx-edition-modular-80-plus-bronze-85-eff-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-135mm-gray-fan
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/500w-coolermaster-silent-pro-m-modular-80-plus-85-eff-sli-crossfire-eps-12v-135mm-fan

The Corsair HX650 is a very small step up from the XFX XXX 650W. Both are built by Seasonic with an ADDA ball bearing fan with decent components all around, based on different variants of the old S12 platform (double forward primary and individually regulated secondary). Performance is very good but not astounding for both.

The Cooler Master is decent but not as good, if you wanted to save more money.

I've been waiting for the July 4th sale to see and was hoping that parts would get super cheap at newegg, but it doesn't seem to be the case

Here's my current build that I'm planning to get. If someone can give me some critique it would be great.

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=23936368

Also I have a few additional questions...

How much power does a typical computer build use nowadays? is 600 watts enough for this build? How much more power would a Crossfire/SLI setup use? It's highly unlikely that I'd go crossfire in the future but it's nice to know how much headroom i would need.

Is there a specific type of ram I need to pair with the CPU? I was keeping an eye out for cheap ram on slickdeals and from time to time, someone would mention that X ram isn't compatible or that the voltage isn't the same as the sandy bridge CPU. Can you give me more insight as to what that means?

What's a good optimal HD setup? SSD as main drive, 7200 rpm drive as secondary and a cheap 5400 rpm drive for storage? I'm pretty confused as to what you can do with a 60 gb SSD drive when windows 7 + a starcraft 2 installation will probably take up half the drive already.

lastly, I was hoping that I would only have to spend $1.2k including monitor for my new computer and it looks like that I'm already nearly hitting $1.2k without the monitor. It's not the end of the world if I have to spend a little more... but if I'm overspending in a area, let me know

You just want a dual channel kit (2x2GB, 2x4GB, etc). Anything else doesn't matter. If you're nmot overclocking, why are you getting a $210 motherboard?! and a $65 aftermarket heatsink... ???? Are you aware that you are wasting a lot of money on components that you do not need?

A Radeon HD6870 uses roughly 130w and a core i5 2500 uses roughly 60w, both under load. A quality 600w power supply is more than capable of handling a 6870 CrossfireX configuration.

I don't plan on doing any crazy overclocking but when I was doing my research, reviewers said that the i5 2500k is very overclock-able. I will probably end up overclocking it a bit... For the mobo, Asus has always been my favorite mobo company (haven't built a computer in like 8 years though ) so when I basically filtered by z68, sorted by reviews, an asus one was on top so I went with that. Is there any other motherboard/cpu heatsink you might recommend instead?

also an additional question that I ninja edited into my previous post:

Well you have the core i5 2500 with no suffix in your wishlist. Only processors with a K suffix from Intel such as a core i5 2500K have an unlocked multiplier which is used for overclocking. With a regular core i5 2500, you would only be able to achieve a 4.1GHz overclock at most and having a $210 motherboard for this would be a complete waste when you can just get a ~$100 motherboard to accomplish this.

It depends on what you're looking for in a motherboard? Do you actually need the features offered by the Z68 chipset which is SSD caching and the ability to use the IGP? If not, you can just get a P8P67 variant. Nothing wrong with brand loyalty, I have an ASUS P8P67 myself. Most of ASUS boards are very feature riched and overclockable boards so it seems strange you would pick the P8Z68-V Pro of them all.

Such an expensive heatsink is quite unnecessary for the core i5 2500k. An Xigmatek Gaia for $28 would even accomplish a very good overclock: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233082

Ya, that's basically how you want it. Windows 7, Starcraft II, and some other programs on the SSD. Your secondary 7200rpm drive can be used for Steam games and other games, etc as well as storage maybe or you can have a third HDD for that if you wish.

I'd cut down on almost everything to get the price down except maybe adding an SSD.

ModXStream is not that good, and you don't need that much power, the motherboard is way expensive unless you can name a particular feature of that one that others don't have, the Zalman ball style coolers are really inefficient and cost way more than they should, a $90 1TB drive is probably not worth it, and do you really need what Windows 7 Pro gives you over Home Premium?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions

How many programs do you have? Depending on what you use, you may be able to fit the OS and office/Adobe/web browser/etc. on the SSD. Maybe all of Program Files, and maybe one or two games? Unless you need over 120GB to store all applications, I'd just get a large enough SSD for those. All regular data on mechanical storage of course.

Here's a build from a couple pages back:

Core i5-2500k and Crucial M4 64GB SSD - $315
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.673401

Xigmatek Gaia - $28
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233082

EVGA GTX 560 Ti 850 MHz AR (lifetime warranty on registration) - $235, $215 AMIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130604

AsRock P67 Pro3 - $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230

G.Skill 2 x 4GB DDR3 RAM - $55 after promo code
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311

Samsung Spinpoint F4 EcoGreen 1.5TB - $60 (note: a slower drive though it has 666MB platters, so if programs won't fit on 64GB, get a larger SSD or maybe get a 7200 rpm drive instead)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152287

Samsung CD / DVD-RW - $19
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151233

XFX Core Edition 450W - $55, $45 AMIR
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012

Cooler Master HAF 912 - $60, $50 AMIR (or substitute your own...)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233

extra SATA cable (motherboard comes with 2, and you need 3) - $3.50

Hey, I'm gonna help my friend build a computer, and so far I've come up with this, all off of PCCG:

+ Show Spoiler +
LG GH22NS70 22x DVD-RW Drive Retail- $39
ASUS VE247H 23.6" Widescreen LED Monitor- $199
TP-Link TL-WN951N Wireless N PCI Adapter- $39
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with SP1 OEM- $105
Antec High Current Gamer 520W Power Supply HCG-520- $85
Western Digital Green 2TB WD20EARX- $89
OCZ Agility 3 60GB SSD 2.5"- $139
Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard- $39
Corsair Vengeance CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3- $59
Total of these parts: $793

ASRock P67-PRO Motherboard B3- $119
Intel Core i5 2400- $186
EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB- $259
Antec Three Hundred Case- $59
Total of these parts: $623

Total all together: $1416

His budget is $1500, so that total is pretty much what I need, because it will get to almost $1500 after putting in shipping costs. I'm fairly confident with the first section of components, but I'm a bit unsure with the second. Is there a better setup I could get for the same amount of money? I have no idea whether the case is good or not. He's only going to be using it for gaming and day to day use, not editing or stuff like that. And he's definitely not going to be overclocking or going for SLI. And he's gonna be buying it as soon as he can, probably on Monday. All the parts are going to be bought off PCCG. Thanks for anyone that can help.

Well if he's not overclocking, he can get a H1 / H67 motherboard instead such as an Asrock H61M U3S3: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=16897

Basically any case these days you purchase will provide adequate cooling so it just comes down to the aesthetics and whether it offers you the features or layout that you want.

Power supply is quite expensive. You can get a less expensive one which has a similar build quality and will provide adequate power for such a configuration: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=13454

If you're not overclocking or require the PCIe 16x slots, just get a cheap H61/H67 motherboard instead. That should give you enough savings so you can get two sticks of 4GB memory and/or get a better computer case or just pocket the savings.

Sweet, thanks for the quick replies. I changed the power supply to the one you suggested, but unfortunately the motherboard I suggested is the cheapest one that offers RAM slots that goes over 1333 Mhz, so I'll probably just stick with the P67. I added another stick of RAM, and it's $1440 total, so it should be alright. Thanks

Why do you need 1600MHz again? There's little to no difference in performance between the two for gaming: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/sandy-bridge-ddr3.html and http://techreport.com/articles.x/20377/3 Having higher frequency memory on a motherboard that does not support it will just have it downclock to the frequency that it does support.

Mmk, i haven't seen that article before, thanks for the help. I picked the motherboard you suggested and downgraded the RAM to a 1333 MHz set, I think he'll just keep the money for something else.

The GTX 560 is better, hence the nearly $50 price difference.

I guess I mean to say is that price increase worth it? Is it a substantial gain?

Look at benchmarks and decide for yourself. I personally say no, it runs most games at 1080P just fine. Other people will say yes, its worth the price premium for gaming.
