I plan on playing at 1920x1080 resolution. How good of a setup is this and is everything worth my money if I do no plan on overclocking much (I may overclock a little but nothing extreme)? Also, will it be able to run ultra graphics on Starcraft II?

Thanks.

$270 for a 6950 1GB is a waste of money. Why not just get a 2GB variant at that pricepoint?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127588

I'm assuming you want to do Eyefinity at some point of time, otherwise CrossfireX is a waste of money for your resolution. Even so, there are less expensive boards capable of CrossfireX.

Yes, it will run Starcraft II on ultra. You expect too much out of Blizzard.

Okay, I've been helping my friend build his computer for the past few days. However, while I act like I know what I'm talking about, I'm fairly clueless, so I though I'd double check that the build I helped him put together was actually decent. It's going to be mainly for starcraft, and the budget is $1000. This build squeaks in at $994.

Here it is:
+ Show Spoiler +

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500k
MoBo: Asus P8Z68-V
RAM: Patriot Gamer 2 Series (2 x 4GB)
Graphics: XFX Radeon HD6850
PSU: Antec Earthwatts EA 650W
Case: Corsair Graphite Series 600T
HD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM SATA III
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64

Please note that the CPU, Motherboard, and RAM were a package deal that gave $90 off, so that's why there's 8GB of RAM. My biggest concern is the graphics card; he's sold on that one, but I'm not sure what to think.

Where are you buying from so we can see component availability and pricing.

Is he looking to overclock? Is he looking to do CrossfireX?

The Radeon HD6850 is a good card and will play most games at reasonable settings on 1080p. Of course you could get slightly better cards for more money so the decision is up to you and your friend.

I am having trouble playing sc2 even at low settings i still only get about 30-40 fps shouldn't it be about 60?

Answering your question would require knowing what CPU you have, but it sounds like it. Although a GTX+ could also be having some temp issues and slowing down due to that.

Those things are really temp sensitive, and if they get dust buildup in the heatsink, they get HOT.

Completely normal. Its pretty hard to always get perfect numbers in hardware. Its not like you'll notice the missing 54 Mhz

You linked the memory twice. i5 2400 doesn't require a P67 board, get H67.

Otherwise, it looks reasonable enough. You can probably shave a few dollars here and there, but nothing screams terrible aside from that.

I would say OC the card yourself, but I'm not sure EVGA actually has that cooler available on a reference clock card, and I believe that cooler is better than reference or the External Exhaust. (Haven't seen a review, but it has no excuse not to be better.)

The configuration is good except:

You have a core i5 2400 which has a limited multiplier. You would want a H61 or H67 motherboard since you won't be overclocking, something such as an Asrock H61M U3S3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236 . If you wanted to overclock, you need a core i5 2500k alnog with that P67 motherboard.

I'd go with a XFX Core Edition 450 instead, it provides the same amount of power but is of higher quality hence why it comes with a five year warranty as opposed to three, just $5 more expensive after mail in rebate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207012

The ASUS motherboard provides eight channel audio as opposed to six on the Asrock, provides SATA3 natively as opposed to using another chipset on the Asrock, has four DIMM slots as opposed to two, and some other minor things.

If you're going to spend over $100 for a motherboard, just get a P67 or Z68 motherboard. There is little point in purchasing a H67 motherboard for that much.

Could you explain the reasoning behind just getting a p67 or z68 even though he's not overclocking? Are they just 'better' boards or just what they offer past $100?

The only thing that H67 motherboards over $100 offer over the other two chipsets is the ITX form factor. The Asrock P67 Pro3 which is a very feature rich board can be had for $110, the only thing you're losing by picking this over the h67 board is the ability to use the IGP. If you wanted IGP capabilities, you would pick the Z68 which offers ssd caching and virtu as well. Both of which also allows for overclocking even though if it is limited on non-K processors.

hi,
I plan on buying a new pc and I need some advice on my build. I have 2 monitors with 1920x1200 and use the pc mostly for gaming and photoshop/cad stuff.
This would be my first selfmade pc and I want to start overclocking.

CPU: Intel i5 2500k - 173 €
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=41224&agid=1617

CPU-Fan: Coolermaster Hyper 212 - 25€
http://www.alternate.de/html/product/Cooler_Master/Hyper_212_Plus/133337/?
Didnt find the Xigmatek Gaia anywhere so I went with this one.

Motherboard: Asrock P67 Extreme4 - 130€
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43134&agid=1601

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti OC - 193€
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=43719&agid=707
or
Palit GTX 560 Ti Sonic - 203€
http://www.alternate.de/html/product/Palit/GeForce_GTX560_Ti_Sonic/810380/?
I'm not too sure about those choices, i pretty much picked them at random.

RAM: Kingston 2x4GB - 54€
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=44139&agid=1192

PSU: Corsair CX 500W - 63€
http://www.arlt.com/Hardware/PC-Komponenten/Netzteile/2900099.html
The XFX 450 is not an option (not available).

SSD: OCZ Agility3 120GB (6Gbps) - 171€
http://www.arlt.com/Hardware/PC-Komponenten/Festplatten/Solid-State-Drive-SSD/120GB-OCZ-Agility-3-AGT3-25SAT3-120G.html

HDD: Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS 1TB - 46€
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=25683&agid=689
Random pick, the only requirement is 1TB size.

Case: Lian-Li PC-8N - 80€
http://www.alternate.de/html/product/Lian_Li/PC-8N/135886/?
I first wanted the Antec 300, but I've heard it is quite loud. Is this one better? I'm open for other suggestions (case should look blank like the Antec300 i dont want/need fancy LEDs or windows).

My budget is ~1000€.
Is this setup ok? I'm especially worried about the case and the gpu.
Thanks for your help

Pick the Gigabyte GPU simply because they didn't quite make a mess out of their GTX460s like Palit did (defective fan profile + shittier heatsinks). No idea about warranty service but I imagine both would be pretty darn bad.

To silence a case is easy. Make sure there are as little air intake/exhaust points and that the case itself is rigid and heavy. Lian Li cases, like that one you selected, will be quieter because there are less air intake and exhaust points compared to the Antec 300 but its made out of aluminium so its prone to vibrations.

A Fractal Design Define R3 costs around 7€ more than the Lian Li case you selected and is a much more versatile case. Depending on your tolerances, you can pick between silence or performance since Fractal Design provides bitumen slates which you can use to block unused fan mounts as well as a cheap PCI slot fan controller.

If you're not doing SLI, you can switch the motherboard to an Asrock P67 Pro3. If you are considering SLI for the future, you're going to need a stronger power supply.
