http://www.hardwareversand.de/60 cm (24) /52440/Dell UltraSharp U2412M (schwarz).article Is the only difference between these two monitors the size? (And resolution, of course, 16: 9 vs 16:10), I've heard they're top quality monitors and I'm getting the upgrade itch. Gah! I currently have a 21.5 inch 1080p Samgsung P2250 Syncmaster, I'm not sure I'd appreciate the difference.

I thought nvidia was more or less irrelevant in the GPU market nowadays, like AMD is in the CPU market (perhaps to a lesser extent for nvidia). edit : I see there are some 660 gtx starting at 175$, so it's different as it's more or less the same as a 7850, I thought it was like 230$, posted too quickly.

People like their Nvidia for whatever reason, even if they don't use CUDA or PhysX or whatever else (uh, custom refresh / resolutions, different drivers / control panel, maybe better multi-GPU performance). For the Blizzard games, Nvidia is relatively good too. Also, maybe those thinking long term that like high-res textures and such, are looking for a relatively cheap graphics card with 2GB VRAM—by default, not one of those low-end options that cram way more VRAM than is justified. If you're looking at HD 7850 2GB, you might as well get GTX 660 or HD 7870 instead, and GTX 660 is cheaper than HD 7870. I feel like it's pretty much the only Nvidia option right now that's not that undercut by AMD.

What is your budget? Somewhere around $1,000, but it's flexible. I don't want to be spending twice that amount or anything, but I can go a bit higher if necessary. What is your resolution? I've been using a 4:3 monitor for the last 13 years or so, and am most likely going to be getting a new monitor that will be included in the budget cost. What are you using it for? LoL/Starcraft 2, browsing, watching movies. It would be nice to have the option of streaming, but it's not necessary. What is your upgrade cycle? 2+ years. When do you plan on building it? As soon as possible. Do you plan on overclocking? No. Do you need an Operating System? No, I have Windows 7. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No. Where are you buying your parts from? If I were to buy locally, it'd be from http://genericcomputer.com. Otherwise, I live in Vancouver, Canada, so whichever place has the best prices.

Some prices look a bit high, like the optical drive and RAM. Even at microcenter you can just get something cheaper. Normal Corsair Vengeance has tall heatspreaders on the RAM, which is pretty much just a negative, anyway. I didn't check CPU / mobo promo deals but if you just want something that should work and is cheap, get the Z77 Pro3. If you're spending around the Extreme4 level, you might as well be buying something better.

Not hard to do what you want to do, but ask when you're ready to buy. Specials change, so links to parts won't be relevant. Also, new hardware will probably be out. @GolemMadness Monitor: BenQ gw2450hm - $175 http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=69380&vpn=GW2450HM&manufacture=BenQ&promoid=1334 Core Components: $637 i5-3570k - $240 Gigabyte z77-HD4 - $120 Gigabyte 650 Ti Boost - $180 CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo - $35 2x4gb Kingston Hyperx Blu RAM - $62 + Show Spoiler + http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=70541&vpn=BX80637I53570K&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1334 http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=78646&vpn=GA-Z77-HD4&manufacture=Gigabyte&promoid=1334 http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=81621&vpn=GV-N65TBOC-2GD&manufacture=Gigabyte http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=64385&vpn=RR-212E-20PK-R2&manufacture=COOLERMASTER http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=70136&vpn=KHX1600C9D3B1K2/8GX&manufacture=Kingston&promoid=1334 Supporting Components: Bit Fenix Outlaw Case - $50 XFX Core 450w PSU - $52 Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD - $70 + Show Spoiler + http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=63255&vpn=BFC%2DOLW%2D100%2DKKN1%2DRP&manufacture=BitFenix&promoid=1360 http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=63238&vpn=P1450SX2B9&manufacture=XFX http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=77210&vpn=MZ-7TD120BW&manufacture=Samsung Memory & Storage&promoid=1334 http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=65701&vpn=ST1000DM003&manufacture=Seagate http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=49597&vpn=DRW-24B1ST Bulk&manufacture=ASUS Total: $984. You may be able to reduce that a tad by price matching from other Canadian retailers. I did not do this in the interest of saving my time. The majority of the budget goes to: overclockable i5 (for SC2 & streaming utility) and a good quality 24" monitor. The graphics card is decent, solidly in the mid-tier of good gaming cards (AKA extreme overkill for easy-graphics games like LoL & SC2). It is roughly equivalent to the 7850. I did run into a few more budget problems than anticipated, so stripped the SSD & DVD-burner. You can choose if you need those parts or want to drop overclockability for them, or something like that. If you're getting everything else at microcenter, might as well just get the power supply there too. You can just grab a Corsair CX and call it a day. Their selection sucks, so there's a huge price gulf between the CX and something significantly better. MC has the thermaltake v2 for a pretty good price. It's not a great PSU but neither is the CX series. I'd really advise against buying a cx or a thermaltake or buying your psu from microcenter (newegg has great prices and is available to everyone, why not newegg for the psu?) but between the cx and thermaltake i'd just go whichever is cheaper at MC. The pro3 is a terrible motherboard, you really shouldn't get it. Microcenter has a special on the MSI Z77A-G41 for like $30 (it might be back to $44 now though), if you want to get a piece of junk motherboard, get that instead. It's way less for similar shit quality. If you want a decent board, any gigabyte D3H is the way to go for a mid-range board (d3h, x-d3h, ud3h). Asrock boards are total shit on z77. Pro3 is just a shit board, nothing special for it's price, but the extreme4 is terribly low quality for it's price. The Ud3H is an extremely high quality board for similar price, a way better buy (the features on it are in line with $200 boards). 660ti > 660, and i dont think mc has the best prices on gpus? I dont like EVGA either, they don't support warranties on used GPUs. Might not sound like a big deal but if you lose your receipt, you lose. They are supposed to have great support, if you don't mind this then don't worry. Just most GPU companies dont' care for the receipt, support warranty even if it's used (so if you want to give your gpu to someone later in the future, or trying to sell it, you'll have a harder time). 840, dont get that. You can find the 830 128gb for $85 at amazon, it's actually a faster SSD than the 840 (which was supposed to be a 'cheaper' version of the 830, and it is faster in some things but ultimately it's considered slightly worse for a higher price, not worth it at all). If you want a better drive, the 840 pro is where it's at, but realyl I'd recommend the 830 (or crucial m4 if cheaper, but it usually isn't). If it's just sc2, I definitely recommend the 128gb over 256gb (put that extra cash in a ud3h or i7!). I've only used 40gb in my drive over the last 3 years on my sc2 gaming computer, i actually regret buying an 80gb ssd instead of a faster 64gb ssd for the same price. stallion for $39 right now isn't a bad deal actually. It's not great though. I'd really recommend waiting on a better deal to come around, you just missed the xfx pro 550w at $39, which was a great deal. hyper 212 evo is a piece of crap. Get the hyper 212+ instead for $10 cheaper AR on newegg (then, put that $10 into a yate loon fan for 5 and the 3rd best thermal paste around for $3 and have way better cooling). EVO is a realyl, really bad cooler, do not buy it, and the fan is even worse. id rate your build quite low at the moment. Quite simply: - z77x-ud3h @ 109 (at only $10 more than the extreme4? Soooo worth it, such a steal, it's like paying $10 more for the i7 - over i5, except the i5 isn't total garbage). - i5-3570k $189 - Hyper 212+ at newegg $19 - corsair vengeance 2x4gb $46 1600 CL9 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233144 easy to remove heatspreader, and with hyper 212+ it'll actually fit just fine. - 660ti, not 660. but if you only play sc2 or other blizzard/moba games, a 660 is absurd overkill and waste of money, better off getting a lower end card and then putting more money into other parts of computer (you woulnt have to get such crappy everything else like you currently are, you could possibly get an i7 even instead, something like 7770 or 470). - xfx pro 550w on newegg is decent, rosewill capstone 450w is decent, neo eco if it's below $40 anywhere, pc power and cooling under $50 for silencer mk3... cx430 or thermaltake v2 (not v1!!!) are okay if you pay super cheap for them, they are bad though you may get issues with such lower quality psus. I had a few cx psu's blow on me (im talking about the new bronze ones too). - case, check out the nzxt phantom. similar quality, they are both neck and neck cases generally so just check it out, if you like it more, get that instead. Also, basically all the zalman cases are really good for super cheap, if you want to save money to get that ssd, get an i7 instead...

What's everyone's thoughts on nvidia vs amd gpus? For example the 7970 ghz vs gtx 680 - from everything I've read, it seems the 7970ghz has a bit better performance, is said to OC better, AND it comes with crysis 3 + bioshock infinite. However, reviews have me a bit worried about reliability. I chose the manufacturers on newegg with the highest reviews for each card. For high end cards, AMD is better. You shouldnt choose manufacturers on newegg based on highest reviews... in fact you shouldn't rely on newegg reviews at all, most people who are posting those reviews are idiots (seriously, just read through the 1 star reviews and see how stupid they are). I really can't think of any modern GPU company that is unreliable, even sapphire and msi are pretty good. You really should just get the cheapest card that is the right model, right vram amount, then research that specific model and see if there's any major issues with it (ie 7950 is a great card, gigabyte is a great brand, but gigabyte 7950 windforce has issues that make that particular card a bad buy), type in something like "X specific card vs" and see what results come up, and if the commonly compared card is better or worse (what you should do with everything, really). Coil whine can occur with anything, mobo or card or psu, it comes when the coils get above 80-120*C depending on the coils. My Z77X-UD5H, even with 1.65v, never gets anywhere near 70*C so it won't coil whine, while my gtx 460 gets to 80*C sometimes but the coils are high enough quality that they don't whine at that temp. Meanwhile my msi z77a-g41 has coil whine at stock voltage on an i5-3570k, because it's crap quality. The people on newegg reviews are idiots, and the 7970 is going to be pumping lots of power so coil whine might occur. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad card (although it is usually something you dont see with high quality products). XFX is a great brand. I really wouldn't care about free games, unless you actually intended to buy them... You can sell the game codes on ebay pretty safely, but you won't get much for them (do the research on the value of the game code, how easy it is to sell, and consider the true cost of the GPU the time it takes to sell such codes, the money you'd get for the codes, to see what the true price is for you). This is coming from someone who scraps computers for parts regularly, even down to sata cables and floppy drives and hdd controllers. Finally, this is easily googleable but I imagine youdidn't know where to look. Don't trust anything on newegg reviews, Tomshardware, or Anandtech (a few good posters on AT but unless you know better you wouldn't know who they were, TH is total trash, absolutely zero good posters there). If you want good information or to search on a subject, go to overclock.net, xtremesystems.... literally any pc question you have, just add to it in google "site:overclock.net" or "xtremesystems". xtreme is better for ram questions. OCUK and overclockersclub are good too. http://www.overclock.net/t/1356341/7950-vs-660-ti/0_100
